Best of Brandy

Let's talk about this. I like the vast majority of the tracks and I remember a good half or so from when they were in radio domination mode. I think my favorite track is probably "Full Moon," and the only tracks i'm not really feeling are "Have You Ever?" and "BrokenHearted," they're kind of snoozeable. The Kanye song is good but probably my third-least favorite track. How about that Phil Collins cover!!! Does that count as OMGWTFLOL?

She's always been dreadful.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

You've always been predictable.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

:-)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

somehow, my aim icon got to be a picture of brandy and an announcement for her last album. not sure how to get rid of it, or if i want to.

i liked 'sittin up in my room'.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh and if anyone has any favorite tracks that didnt make the comp, let me know! I'm only sort-of familiar with her work. (I think the only album I've heard all the way through is the last one, which I adored)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

(I don't normally talk like that 'which i adored,' whats going on?)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

I'd only check it out if there was a guest rap by ex-boyfriend Kobe Bryant. Maybe he could take his fued with Shaq off the court?

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Off Full Moon the album the following tracks are definitely worth hearing:

All In Me - Rodney Jerkins' in full blown sci-fi production decadence mode, only unusually deliriously upbeat. Includes bizarre but inspired 2-step section.

Apart - Weird vocals and pseudo-gothic production makes this Brandy's "Kate Bush" moment.

Can We/I Thought - two chips off the "What About Us" block. One of these is better than the other but I can't remember which right now.

Anybody - I think this is also good, a sort of low-key but intense number, but I would have to listen again to go into further detail.

WOW - my secret favourite Full Moon track, a treacly ballad. I dislike all of the other treacly ballads on Full Moon, and I can't really say why "WOW" is any different but it really is.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 11 April 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I like "Brokenhearted," but yeah, "Have You Ever" is sort of the pits (and her only solo #1--depressing). You really can't fuck with her first four or five singles, though. About as good as mid-90s R&B gets.

Does Monica have one of these yet? It would probably be even better than this.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 11 April 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Um. I think every Brandy album has been worthwhile, with at least three great cuts on each. Thank you for playing.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 April 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Man i have like nearly no familiarity w monica's stuff.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

and tim - thanks, i'll check those out!

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 11 April 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, do that. Heck, you might as well buy the whole CD, you can find it cheap pretty much everywhere now. I think it's the most underrated LP of the 00s to date.

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 11 April 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Jeff do you like most of the ballads though? They really drag the album down in my opinion. But yeah the great tracks are fantastic. And I think better/more compelling than the Aphrodisiac material probably.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 11 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

I actually don't mind "the Boy is Mine," but only because of the other vocalist (Monica?)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 April 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Tim, I can't think of any I actively dislike, put it that way. (And I'm not really an RnB ballad lover on the whole.) There's maybe two too many of them, that I'll grant you. And I agree about Aphrodisiac.

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Monica stomps all over Brandy despite Brandy having better source material (and I like Brandy).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

"The Boy is Mine" is kinda eh. Considering the talent involved, fairly disappointing.

"Angel of Mine" is probably the best R&B song of the past decade.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Monica is amazing to me in that she really does do banal, disposable, nothing songs but manages to completely and consistently sell them with great vocal performances. Brandy is capable of giving great performances but more often than not is given songs that you could almost fart and they would still come out fantastic ("Full Moon" and "Sitting In My Room" in particular come to mind).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

"angel of mine"? from what album?

nonobodynow, Monday, 11 April 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. The '98 one.

Apparently titled The Boy is Mine.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Monica stomps all over Brandy despite Brandy having better source material (and I like Brandy).

My thoughts exactly!

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

"I Thought" is the better one, Tim. Or at least I think so. Or at least it kinda works out to seem better than "What About Us," even, in the end.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that seems right. "I Thought" is the nastier one, yeah?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

all the "Full Moon" album love seconded! and her debut ain't bad either, if you don't mind slightly dated mid-90s R&B. here's a great non-single tune off of it - "Sunny Day".

three years pass...

Seriously, why is Brandy so underrated? Literally everything I've heard from her upcoming album (including the bsides) is amazing and better than Beyonce's album, she's a beast vocally - she kills John Legend on his own album - all 4 of her albums are great (2 of them I would consider classic), yet she doesn't really get much attention. Full Moon for example is one of the best albums of this decade, so much better than Aaliyah's s/t album which gets so much praise (it's a great album, but still...).

Like seriously listen to this song:

Hair Weave's Lookin Kinda Purdy (The Brainwasher), Monday, 17 November 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

"Departed" is terrific. Plus, hearing 'Dark Child' at the beginning of a song always takes me back to the good ol days.

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 17 November 2008 08:49 (seventeen years ago)

I find her to be a rather bland singer. She does have a few jams, though.

The Reverend, Monday, 17 November 2008 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

am still the only person who'll rep for afrodisiac which is one of my favourite r&b albums ever, and also a hugely important album in terms of the evolution of timbaland's sound

i love her voice! that rasp in her throat <3

lex pretend, Monday, 17 November 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's her voice itself that I find boring but what she does with it.

The Reverend, Monday, 17 November 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I'd argue that Brandy has songs/performances that bring out the positive side of her voice only some of the time.

Bit of a fuck up here...

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

the burning question is "what two songs did she play?"

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)

"Right Here (Departed)" and "What About Us?"

some dude, Thursday, 22 August 2013 19:10 (twelve years ago)

I guess it's too much to hope that she did an impromptu cover of "Where Do You Go" by No Mercy before leaving the stage

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Thursday, 22 August 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)

South Africa clearly not familiar with #BrandyDeepCuts

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 22 August 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

The only way this could be better is if only one male fan had shown up and Brandy sang "The Boy Is Mine" sans Monica

Tim F, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)

Playing London in September. Anyone seen one of her shows? Was it any good?

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Monday, 2 September 2013 09:25 (twelve years ago)

Something tragic about that news story, given how good "What About Us?" is. That said, I can't name anything by her since.

djh, Monday, 2 September 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)

presumably because you just haven't paid attention to her since

lex pretend, Monday, 2 September 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

I have definitely bought records by her since but, you're right, I haven't really paid much attention.

djh, Monday, 2 September 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

six years pass...

I can not believe I only now discovered “I wanna be down” was sampled byTeebee for AprilDawn. Wtf.

got this on a Youtube recommendation recently and blown away by it, the way she goes from basic dance moves and hype-building cheers into those incredible vocals, so much control and yet so thrilling

Forgot how good "Full Moon" (the song) was, that bassline!
