The Truth is better than Supreme Clientele.

Ian, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glaring/semi-glaring omissions: '91: Public Enemy - Apocalypse '91
'92: Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Live and Let Die
'92: Showbiz & AG - Runaway Slave
'92: Boss - Born Gangstaz
'92: Da Lench Mob - Guerrilaz in tha Mist
'93: Paris - Sleeping With the Enemy
'93: Above the Law - Black Mafia Life

Granted, I wouldn't know who to knock off in '92 to fit the middle four -- what's more, I recall the Diamond D record being great as well, so...

Andy K., Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping someone would note the absence of 'Funcrusher Plus', since it should be on there but was CRUELLY DISALLOWED. And 'Stankonia'! 96 was such a bumper year that we also forgot Tribe's 'Beats, Rhymes..' and Keith Murray's 'Enigma'! For shame.

joel, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No way should 'Wild cowboys' be on any best of list for the 90s - it's probably the worst record Sadat X ever appeared on, including that piece of shit DJ Honda record...

jacob, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'bout time ethan put his money where his 'submit' button is.

Jeff W, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what the fuck, wild cowboys is incredible! the lump lump, the title track, open bar, stages and lights, etc etc etc. you're arguing with pete rock, beatminerz, diamond d, buckwild, and showbiz beats? hey i'm sorry labcabincalifornia didn't make the 95 list but that's no reason to hate on sadat.

ethan, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oops i forgot cowboys was from 96, replace labcabincali with 'the score' in my insult then.

ethan, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's this bullshit thread about? It sucks big time.

the pinefox, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just think Sadat sounds weak on that record. I mean fair play, 'One for all' can't be on the list cos it's too early, and there has to be at least one Sadat X record on the list, but I'd take 'Foundation' over 'Wild Cowboys' anyday. Just saying...

jacob, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you're so cute, pinefox.

Josh, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I think it was an homage.

Nicole, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Ethan's so cute then.

Josh, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks josh but it wasn't me.

is the illustrated version that ethan did for pitchfork still available online?

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 5 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
Company Flow, Lord Finesse, Akinyele, and for god's sake I can't believe you don't have O.C.'s "Word...Life" on here.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also wondering about the absence of "Black Bastards". You should have UGK in '96 as well.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wondering what you would bump on 92 and 93 to put Lord Finesse and Akinyele on there (cuz neither of those records seem better than what is currently listed and Company Flow was CRUELLY DISALLOWED and naming an album which went unreleased for half a dozen years is k-lame.)

OTM about UGK though.

Alex Not in SF Exactly, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, first off I don't understand why 92 only has 5 albums instead of ten, which would give the appropriate space needed.

naming an album which went unreleased for half a dozen years is k-lame

Huh? It's a great album, regardless, better than some that are listed that year. Who the fuck cares that its OOP?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

2) raekwon - cuban linx

4) gza - liquid swords

No fucking way. Liquid swords digests cuban linx and develops antacid.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's a great album, regardless, better than some that are listed that year."

It's very difficult to get perspective on an album, its impact, etc, when you are retroactively comparing it to other albums. And it WASN'T out of print! It didn't come out at all! It's like naming the Modern Lovers as the best record of 1972 (rather than the best record of 1976 and that's ONLY four years, NOT nearly seven). And there is no list for 2001.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the the same Ethan that became Trife? Because if it is, I'm surprised by some of those lists. Infesticons?! Roots??!!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh same guy

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

trife & joel too, don't forget, so there were possibly some compromises made by each along the way

(then again, that roots album is the only one of theirs I can't get into, so it would be par for the course for trife to favour it)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and to answer my own question upthread, here's a link to the illustrated version of the lists archived at Pitchfork. well, some of the lists at least (90-92, with both top 5s above filled out to 10s)

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/watw/02-04/90to00-1.shtml
