After listening to recent electronic jerkoff albums by Otto von Schinach and Richard Divine, I'm ready to give up on this label for good. Would I be missing anything?

I like the two records I've heard by Phonecia (Brownout, which is more subtle and crafted than the usual label fare, and the "Odd Jobs" Remix thing, which has a couple of great tracks), but the rest of what I've heard I don't much care for.

Phoenicia "Brownout" is quite dandy.

I'm listening to Brownout now. (Thanks all, and thanks emusic.) This is much better! #8, "Biorepo", is playing and there's heaving machine noises and stuff scraping and gurgling like in those bad Schematic albums, but here it sounds good.

Now I think I recognize Phoenecia for the sole redeeming tracks on one of the label comps. (I recall Push Button Objects disappointing.) No shorage of Autechre apeing, and quite excellent for it.

The Schematic comp Lily Of The Valley is excellent. The Richard Devine track on it is far superior to anything on his Lipswitch album, coming across like Kid 606 meets Piano Magic.

Why Tim, you have a new secret identity, I see.

Damn my father and his toying with preferences!

ALAN FINNEY TO THREAD! We can see what he likes about music and how that shaped young Mr. Finney's mind. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He likes war tunes. From *both* world wars.

Phoenecia's "Brownout" would be a perfect sound track to a remake of the movie "Omegaman" i.e. "I Am Legand" novel by Richard Matheson. The word brownout is so perfect for how it sounds. It has a total doomsday apokalyptic world dieing in a wimper not bang kind of sound.
It reminded me somehow of this and I ended up re-reading the book using it as a soundtrack.

they're still doing shit. here's another big up for brownout.

charleston charge (chaki), Saturday, 9 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I love Brownout, especially the last half. Lost track of the number of times I've listened to that record. They've been working on a new disc for a few years now, hopefully out this year. Their Soul Oddity record is great too.

Devine's live set at 111 Minna last year was incredible. His Aphex Twin and Odd Jobs remixes are still what I play people when someone wants to be blown away.

Glen Velez' Internal Combustion is a great record.

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

cant get into Devine especially annoying live but you know hes working with Trent NIN now?

charleston charge (chaki), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I've been annoyed by him live too -- first two times I saw him actually. third was a direct hi. I liked Assct:Dssct a lot more than the first two albums, it's a punisher

yes I heard that about NIN

scored a clean copy of ischemic folks for like $10

best shit, really enjoyed it and lily of the valley and brownout when they came out, but haven't listened to the CDs in a while and don't remember it all sounding quite this fresh or techno-compatible
