- the necks, sex

- fripp/eno, "the heavenly music corporation"

Royksopp-Melody AM.

or, inclimate weather music, search and destroy: rainy days, blizzards, etc.

(i would assume tornados or hurricanes would be a little too scary to sit around choosing records in.)

I think the "White Birch" by Codiene...mainly because of the cover imagery. Also, cliche stuff like Low. Oh, and early Dinosaur Jr, I always get the image of J Mascis trudging through the snow.

jel, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The song "Skating" by Vince Guaraldi!

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Massive Attack , Portishead and Joni M.

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What kind of snow is it? Majestic snow: Spiritualized, Slowdive, Surface of Eceon Cute snow: Moon Safari, Komeda Sad snow: Leonard Cohen Songs from a Room (think McCabe and Mrs. Miller)

....or just put on some Bach.

Curt, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Debussy, Piano Works, as played by Pascal Rogé -- especially "The Snow is Dancing" from Children's Corner, but some others too.

Phil, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cocteau Twins' Victorialand is snowy.

Graham C, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything on ECM, the Evan Parker one if you live near an abandoned foundry.

dave q, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's snowing here as well (or maybe you are here?) and I have to admit that when it snows I start to regret that so much of the music I have comes from warm climates. When it's snowing out, Arabic music or salsa are not the first thing I reach for. It generally puts me in the mood for crystalline electronic sounds, something somewhat lacking in my CD collection.

Now playing: Terry Riley "Shri Camel."

DeRayMi, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is where living in SoCal is partially useless, since right now it's pretty damn warm. Put on Lull's Cold Summer and zone.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pan American - "Code" Rosewater Elizabeth - "A Cloud Hides the Moon" Slowdive - "Souvlaki Space Station" Spokane - "The Absentee" Polar - "Moses Supposes" Coastal - "Her Reflection in Chrome" Appleseed Cast - "View of a Burning City" Soulwhirlingsomewhere - "Landed"

Dare, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(it's snowing here, as well .. sneaky thing, in that you can't hear it fall until it's too late to save your car from being parked downhill. by the way, if anyone could tell me how to actually insert line breaks in this damned thing, it would be much appreciated.)

Dare, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not you as well! First Arthur, now you. Shame! ;-)

< BR > -- but without the spaces. Place it after the word you wish to end the line with.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surf's up (seriously).

Billy Dods, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do Make Say Think - S/T
Mojave 3 - Excuses For Travellers
Beth Orton - Central Reservation

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sneaky thing, in that you can't hear it fall until it's too late to save your car from being parked downhill.

The trick is to notice the way everything is suddenly getting more quiet as a result of the snow that has fallen. That's how you can hear it: through the silence it creates, Grasshopper.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Halo Benders "Snowfall"

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the silence of snow. What sucks is the big huge "PLOP"s that occur when it falls off the tree branches onto the roof above my room.

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Highway 61 Revisited

M. Matos, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seefeel - 'Polyfusia'
Jan Jelinek - 'Loop-Finding Jazz Records'
anything by Labradford
Galaxie 500 is a great choice, too. Have you ever listened to that right after waking up from a nap? It's perfect for those times.

Clarke B., Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HEY HEY HEY...it's snowing in NYC, yes yes ya'll.

And this is what I brought to work, to compliment the snow:

Nobukazu Takemura "Scope" The best of Parliament Fluxion "Vibrant Forms" Tortoise "TNT" Smog "Knock Knock" Autechre "EP7" Desmond Dekker "Rockin' Steady"

Gage-o, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dillinger Escape Plan.

adam, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Play the first Grassy Knoll album.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apart from the obvious "Footprints in snow" by Disco Inferno - which I'd be heading for if it was snowing here in Newport, but it isn't, it's just pissing down - I'd go for the Global Communication remix of the second Chapterhouse album - whatever it was called - because it always reminds me of walking to work in the snow on my second day of living in Newport.

Great idea about G-500 after a nap. I'll have to try it sometime.

Rob M, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Great idea about G-500 after a nap.
I usually have a nap right after I put it on. ;-)

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's snowing here, too. Drove up Wisconsin Ave listening to Mystikal on WPGC radio. Why not?

VARIABLE CLOUDY SKIES WILL PREVAIL

DeRayMi, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that dog.'s Retreat From the Sun sounded brilliant whilst slaloming down the Mass Pike into the heart of this wintry beast. Pitchblende's Gygax & Helmet's Aftertaste didn't work so well (though that Helmet guitar sound is so freakin' cool, I can ignore what Page Hamilton is kvetching about and happily swear at idiot drivers unable to control their cars or chartered buses).

David Raposa, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If it's overcast, then The Doctor Came At Dawn by Smog. If it's clear and still and the light brilliant, then something by the Chills. I only have a compilation, so I don't know which album would be best. If the snowflakes are big and soft and wet, then what?

Kara Fig, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with Brian's 2nd comment. The sound of snowflakes falling on one another is so subtle and mysterious.

Everyone had a respectful hush and dignity to themselves today.

Until a snowball fight broke out in front of our house and set off all the car alarms.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Piano Magic - Snow Drums. Mogwai - Small Children In The Background. Francoise Hardy - Tout Les Garcons Et Les Filles. Goldfrapp - The whole damn album. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (the best thing she ever did, the only Mariah song I still like; the momentum of this song is spectacular, and when it snows I like to drive onto my old high school soccer field and do many donuts, tear shit up with this song blaring, preferably with a trill ass woman sitting shotgun who is down for putting snow on my tackle and defrosting from here if you get my drift.

Ramosi, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course... Bugskull "Distracted Snowflake Vol. 1" and "Distracted Snowflake Vol. 2"

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yoko Ono's "Listen The Snow Is Falling" by Galaxie 500!!!!!

David Gunnip, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Prokofiev's "The Battle on the Ice." And the High Llamas' Gideon Gaye. (First one self-explanatory. The second one just sorta fits somehow.)
