Oh, I guess it's the b-side for "Only This Moment".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The show last night was the motherfucking shit, btw

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Röyksopp Announce Details of New Album

Caroline Bermudez reports:
A Nordic blast of downtempo electronica will hit hot American shores on June 28, when Röyksopp release The Understanding on Astralwerks. It will be released in the UK on June 27 on Wall of Sound. When asked by European music industry magazine Music Week how the new album differs from their previous outing, the duo said: "Even though the last one was called Melody A.M., this one is even more about melody."

Röyksopp also revealed in the interview that the new album was more forward-looking than Melody A.M., which was heavily reminiscent of 70s soundtracks.

Lead single "Only This Moment" will be unveiled in the UK on June 13. Röyksopp are currently slated to perform at KCRW's World Music Festival, taking place at the Hollywood Bowl throughout the summer. They, along with Basement Jaxx, will headline the festival's Planet Electronica event on July 17.

Here is the tracklist for The Understanding:

01 Triumphant
02 Only This Moment
03 49 Percent
04 Boys
05 Follow My Ruin
06 Beautiful Day
07 What Else Is There?
08 Circuit Breaker
09 Alpha Male
10 Someone Like You
11 Dead to the World

Looking forward to this.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

wasn't that taken with anything on melody am, but their remixes (coldplay, beck, the streets) and outside production work (erm, annie?) have been so good that i'm quite anticipating hearing this

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

still rate Melody AM as well as the live show and remixes so looking forward to this. and if H5 do the video for 'Only This Moment' then that's a bonus.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Melody AM is AMAZING, so I'm definitely gonna be checking this one out at the first opportunity.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

i've got some frequencies for you...

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

OK I'm coming over. I'll be there in two seconds.

(doo-doo... BAM... do, doo-doo... BAM
doo-doo... BAM... do, doo-doo... BAM)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

That "I'll be there in two seconds" line sounded incredibly Norwegian btw.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"Even though the last one was called Melody A.M., this one is even more about melody."

You mean...there's more like you at home?

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

hot american shores!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

fuck, it's "i want to give you some good frequencies" :(

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm.....I should listen to "Melody AM" later
i remember really enjoying it when it came out

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
the new single leaked. I'll upload it in a few.

"Only This Moment":

http://s41.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=13J97M5EPSPGJ08VHT8L7XL2PG

I quite like it. Very pretty.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

the album pulls me between "yuck" and "that was quite nice" but it doesn't seem to have anything remotely like the super-funky 'eple' on it..

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Listening to the album right now...lots of vocals, which with their sound is I think a good thing.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Who does the vocals on this one?

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Found this on the Wall of Sound site:
It is now time for ‘The Understanding’. Recorded in Bergen, Röyksopp sing on much of their new album. There are also additional vocals from Chelonis R Jones from Get Physical Records (49 Percent), Karin Dreijer from The Knife (What Else Is There?) and new vocalist Kate Havnevik (Only This Moment and Circuit Breaker).

No Annie, looks like.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

this may sound a little close to alice deejay or something for my liking.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

or maybe i like it... i think i don't... i do... not... : (

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

has the album leaked already?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Single is extrememly sugary, almost heading into Kylie territory (not a bad thing, just saying, less disco though).

Totally saved by that little pause to 'okay' and the vocal handovers though. It's cute. A whole album like this?? :( I hope they've kept some of the quirkiness that eventually endeared the previous record to me.

I do like them, but have the weary feeling if this is any good it might take all four singles to convince me (like Melody A.M. finally made me crack with an early morning viewing of the video for 'Sparks' (sob)) to actually bother checking it out.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

royksopp always make me want to travel

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

This song is really beautiful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

It's just packed to the gills with vocal hooks. Maybe a little too dense for some, but I really like how all the voices are stacked on top of each other - reminds me a bit of Todd Edwards in its sad rapturous chorus quality.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

The female vocal part is so sad!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Melody AM is very special and will always remind me (pun unintentional) of a certain visit at a certain time. I'm hoping the Understanding will be even better. It's been a long time.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Also, I don't hear anything remotely "Kylie" about this.

Does anyone have the album?????

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

m4rk r1ch4rds0n claims to

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

is this person on s0u1s33k?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

no he is on p1tchf0rkm3d14.c0m

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Listening to the album right now...lots of vocals, which with their sound is I think a good thing.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

4h, 0k.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I have played this song 25 times today.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

There's a part of the male vocal that's vocodered and autotuned and sounds like a cross between the vocodered bit in "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Digital Love".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Yawn. Can't wait for all 10,000 of the inevitable crappy trance and progressive house remixes of this.

jotai, Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Yuck.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

here's the braxe and falke remix -

http://s21.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=202WHFVS2058V2X8DUCDZMD8T8

stirmonsterr, Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Nice, but seems unrelated.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

i have the album, and firstworldman's comment fits it perfectly. one minute i'm grooving along and the next i'm kinda repulsed. one one occasion it's the vocal i don't specifically like, but a few of the tracks are quite good. but i'm a hater and i'm sure you lot will eat it up.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Friday, 27 May 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

this kinda blows

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 27 May 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Questions for the haters:

Why does it make you "yawn"?

Why does it "blow"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 27 May 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Cover. Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 27 May 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. It's a little like if the cover of Madonna's "The power of goodbye" wandered onto the set of her "Frozen" video shoot.

brittle-lemon, Friday, 27 May 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

the single is just too emo for me, i'm not digging it. the tune with chelonis on the album is killer though - broken beats! this little snare hit that comes in every 32 bars makes me think it's going to launch into 'bombscare'. the tune is hot.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Friday, 27 May 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Dude, quit teasin' and put the Chelonis track on.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

the cover's pretty bad.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

that is one ugly cover

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I like-not-love it.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 27 May 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

can someone repost the album pretty please??

supertwerp (supertwerp), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Great review, Nabisco!

This album has really been the surprise of the year for me. I love it.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

So who's going to the show on Sunday?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

nitsuh abebe = nabisco? loved the review as well, if that's what review you were talking about adam.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

yes, that is him.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

yes, thank you adam. always a pleasure.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

no trouble, no trouble at all. On you go.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

I keep hearing "Beautiful Day Without You" as the sequel to "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent review Nitsuh!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, I just wrote N. to compliment him on his "Lost Generation" article and didn't even notice he had the headline review today, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks! Note also today's funny interview where Josh Homme and Raposa are kicking it like total BFF.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

all the haters need to read that review, good job in describing the two sides of 'only this moment'

rizzx (rizzx), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

the lost generation article is a great read as well. you're on a roll, don't stop

rizzx (rizzx), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

So the track "Boys" on the bonus disc is incredible. I remember hearing it before, but can't remember where??? Radio? Is it on a mix? A couple of the other bonus tracks are excellent as well.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

So I've been hearing...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

I can't afford to see them. :(

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the tshirt!

I was all drunk and was like 'no, that one. the RAINBOW one.'

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

so google just told me that basement jaxx and royksopp played at the hollywood bowl, two minutes from my house, last night.

i'm sorry that i opened this thread. i'm sorry for everything.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was all drunk and was like 'no, that one. the RAINBOW one.'

Hahaha, you should have got one for Dean.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

I was disapointed the first time i've heard it. But keep on going back to it since.
Though they for sure don't sound like them, Royksopp are the successors of PSB and Saint Etienne.
Can't wait to see them live at the end of the month!
Though it's not my favourite song, the second part of the bridge on "Go Away" is one of the best thing i've heard all year

Arnault (arc73hk), Monday, 18 July 2005 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm lovin' this album...and the bonus disc too! "Clean Sweep" is just awesome.

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Just broke this back out today for the first time in probably two months. It's still great, just to let you know. Although I'm never going to be in love with 49 Percent.

matt2 (matt2), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

i listened to it twice this weekend and love it more than ever. and i LOVE 49 percent.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know why I can't completely fall in love with it. I feel like I should and at moments I feel like I'm going to, but every time it comes back on I have to fight jumping to Sombre Detune.

matt2 (matt2), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
yeah

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've been overdosing on "49 Percent" somewhat ridiculously of late.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

It makes me think of Michael Moog.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! I adored "That Sound" too. Thank you Steve you have made my day.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
The Understanding!

I was an idiot not to see them live.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Sunday, 22 January 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
people really hate that "r'n'b" song eh? :|

stupid people.

Still such a weird half-great album this... it's like in focusing on creating as many brilliant vocal pop/dance tunes as they got on here (no mean feat!) they managed to completely turn off the part of their brains which made memorable instrumental tracks. I hope they put another record out, seeing as this seems almost like a flop, or at least a very hard/missed sell to the fanbase that liked the first album.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 9 April 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

a flop?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 9 April 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I don't know the chart positions or anything but it seemed to me like a lot of the ambient/chillout liking, one-dance-album-per-year type crowd that dug the first record were turned *right* off by the pop/house thrills here (more fool them, it's the best stuff on it). I'm repeating my last point I guess.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 9 April 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

every remix I've heard off this has been good. I should probably get it.

has anyone given the royksopp's night out live thing a listen?

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 9 April 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

It seems about 50/50 -- wacky Queens of the Stone Age cover, excellent performance on "What Else Is There?" and some decent versions of other songs. Erlend not being there kind of detracts from two of the songs.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 10 April 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

still goo

admrl, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

admrl, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking today how this album does absolutely nothing for me right now :/

mh, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't actually start this thread. I have *NEVER* started an ILM thread. There are posts missing at the beginning.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Also, it says the first post is from 2001.

Also yes, still GREAT.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

What are they up to?

admrl, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

adam did you see the royksopp 'back to mine', that's the last thing they did.

haitch, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

this

haitch, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

^ better than any of their albums

, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

i love that Heads track so much. has a re-edit of it been done yet?

blueski, Thursday, 19 July 2007 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

It's really a cover, but surely has the characteristics of a re-edit if you fancy. I like it.

willem, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

radio slave did one.

haitch, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

My first encounter with this album was not positive (crappy store headphone preview lead me to believe it was just too sunny for my decidedly not disposition at the time) and completely dissuaded me from picking it up.

But, over time, the remixes made their way to various dancefloors. Reminding me that I had spent a lot of quality time with Melody A.M. and that if RRöyksopp managed to convince me to lock in a whole album on repeat, maybe a second chance was in order.

Now, aside from "49 Percent" (which is skipped without fail and never gets imported into the iPod), I've grown to love every track on this. Example: "Sombre Detune" - throw that on a proper pair of speakers and you might just find it's an extension of the electronic psychedelia they explored on "Royksopp's Night Out", only better.

dblcheeksneek, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

The first message is interesting. "Only This Moment" probably wasn't even written in 2001. :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

thanks willem!

blueski, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:14 (seventeen years ago)
