I'd almost just say Rhino's Have a Nice Day series to thread...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

There's a lot of dreck on those sets, Ned. None of them can be played straight through.

This is to separate the wheat from the chaff!

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

There's a lot of dreck on those sets, Ned. None of them can be played straight through.

"19. Vanity Faire - Hitchin' a Ride (in which ska is accidentally reinvented)"

Not that I'm the one to say this in an informed manner, but I think the fine country of Jamaica might have a wee problem swallowing this claim.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but listen to it - those guys did ska without meaning to. I think.

brianiac (briania), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

20. Oliver - Good Morning Starshine

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

But but but I like it

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

25. Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died

by the way, there's a song on that Seals and Crofts record called "Hummingbird" which is even better than, or at least as good as, Summer Breeze. So worth the dollar it costs to buy the album.

If we have a hard time getting toward 100...

I think I'd have a hard time stopping before 1000!

For instance, in 1970 alone, most of these.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm filing an official protest against both Ms. Lawrence & Ms. Simon being on this otherwise wonderful list. & anyone that mentions that SKYROCKETS IN FLIGHT song gets cockpunched and/or tittytwisted. Carry on.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I love that this thread is getting violent.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

LITE LISTENING FAVORITES MOTHERFUCKERS

Hey, another Neighborhoodies slogan!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

For instance, in 1970 alone, most of these.

There are many great songs on there, but not all of them have that "70s AM goodness" vibe that I think we're going for here (even though all of them very well may have been ubiquitous on the airwaves back then). For instance, "War" or "Instant Karma" would be pretty out of place.

(Disclaimer: thanks to the job I held for the bulk of 2003, I loathe a great deal of these songs with an Alex in NYC-esque passion. Also I think I should have probably nominated Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" for #100 instead.)

With their sudden, inexplicable indie cred, what about:

America - Sister Golden Hair
America - Ventura Highway

And one for me:

Jay Ferguson - Thunder Island

Ignoring punctuation, spacing, and capitalization, a monkey typing letters uniformly at random has one chance in 26 of correctly typing the first letter of Hamlet. It has one chance in 676 (26 times 26) of typing the first two letters. Because the probability shrinks exponentially, at 20 letters it already has only one chance in 2620 = 19,928,148,895,209,409,152,340,197,376, roughly equivalent to the probability of buying 4 lottery tickets consecutively and winning the jackpot each time. In the case of the entire text of Hamlet, the probabilities are so vanishingly small they can barely be conceived in human terms. The text of Hamlet, even stripped of all punctuation, contains well over 130,000 letters which would lead to a probability of one in 3.4×10183946. For comparison purposes, there are only about 1079 atoms in the observable universe and only 1017 seconds have elapsed since the Big Bang.
