Introducing a musical solo

I'm looking at compiling a list of things that are said to introduce solos, not the introduction of the soloist, but of the solo, e.g., Gene Vincent "let's rock."

Anything memorable? Thanks.

Michael Nesmith on "Papa Gene's Blues": "Pick it, Wilson!"

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

The Eggs "Government Administrator": 'Okay Rob, play guitar now brother'

alext (alext), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Poison: "Talk Dirty to Me":
"C.C. pick up your guitar and talk to me"

Pixies - "Monkey Gone to Heaven": "Rock me, Joe"

Steven Tyler routinely lets loose a "GUEEtar!"

Springsteen, "Thunder Road" -- "Well I got this guitar and I've learned how to make it talk" [little flourish]

In a certain Gram Parsons song, he says something like, "Pick it for me (James?)!" before a solo -- I think it's "The Return of the Grievous Angel"

Ronnie Van Zant whistles to call the guitar solo on quite a few Lynyrd Skynyrd songs.

from the last Primus EP.

"Go Ler"

*3.5 second skronk guitar solo*

"Thanks Ler"

"Memphis Soul Stew," in its entirety.

Also, Bonzo Dog Band's "The Intro and the Outro," except that all of the soloists are introduced by name.

JB in "Funky Drummer": "One! Two! Three! Four, hit it!" Note that the fourth beat is actually where that comma is.

Even better, the BBC version of same song - "Rock me, Joseph Alberto Santiago"

The Staples Singers, "I'll Take You There" - David Hood's bass and Barry Beckett's keyboard solos are introduced.

Try that again
Songs where the singer mentions his/her bandmates

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

"Draw blood!" in "Werewolves of London."

Les's call-outs to Ler are always great. My favorite is "Ler...banjy boy" -> drunken hobo falling down banjo solo.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

That's from "The Air Is Getting Slippery".

Prince - 'Play In The Sunshine' ("Drummer, drummer! Do your thing!")
Cornelius - 'Moon Walk' ("GO.", introducing a heavy metal guitar attack)
Money Mark - 'Cry' ("Play my organ so-loooo". This works on both the original and Dust Brothers remix)
Jordan Knight - 'A Different Party' ("Jimmy Jam!" Cue keyboard solo dance break)

And the immortal "Drums".

Now I am reminded of Bob Wills, who keeps talking during the solo.

Actually, Zevon says "Draw blood!" on the fade, but it's in the spirit of the thing.

Not exactly a solo, but Captain Beefheart, "Big Eyed Beans From Venus":

Mr. Zoot Horn Rollo, hit that lunar note/
And let it float

Actually fits better in the other thread, but it wasn't there either.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

oh actually it is there, at first I just searched for "Beefheart" --sorry

Surely we've done this, no?

"Alright, take it, Hugh" on "Something Better Change" by the Stranglers.

"GEETAR!" on "I Stole Your Love" by Kiss

"Okay Edge, Play the Blues" on "Silver & Gold" (live version on Rattle & Hum) by U2

"Shove IT!" on "Smart Patrol/Mr.DNA" by Devo

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Trouble Funk does this twice on "So Early in the Morning" (which is not to be confused with The Gap Band's also excellent "Early in the Morning" from the same year).

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

"The Man from Mars stopped eatin' bars and eatin' cars and NOW HE ONLY EATS GUITAR! GET UP!" on "Rapture" by Blondie

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Denim - The Great Pub Rock Revival - "Synthesizer solo!"

Richard C (avoid80), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Def Leppard - "Armageddon It" = "C'mon, Steve, get it!"

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Ringo in "If You've Got Troubles": "Oh rock on....anybody!"

harveyw (harveyw), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Now I am reminded of Bob Wills, who keeps talking during the solo.

Merle Haggard does a bunch of these on his Bob Wills tribute album; without putting it on, the best is "Pay no mind, folks, it's just Georgie French on the piano" (or something like that).

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Don't know if this exactly qualifies, but I love "Editions of You" by Roxy Music: "The crazy music drives you insane... THIS WAY!"

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Prince - 'Play In The Sunshine' ("Drummer, drummer! Do your thing!")

Sexy MF - "Tommy Bar-ba-rel-la in the HOUSE!"

Ash (ashbyman), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Poison: "Hey CC! Pick up that guitar and TALK TO ME!"

Sir Doug: "Lay it on me, Augie!" (I used to think he was shouting "Lay it on me, honky!")

Love: "Johnny's turn now!" which isn't interesting at all, except that for YEARS I believed he was shouting "Chinese time now!" which I still shout all the time playing with my bandmates, before someone takes a solo.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Cornershop ("Funky Days are Back Again") - "Ben, you just show them how funky it can get when funky days are back in vogue again."
