Looks like it's both.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I assume you don't live in NY? We get a new shipment of these guys each week.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

yep, he's the future of man (even tho he kinda looks last season) -which has already arrived in San Fran by the way-by the truckload. infact if anyone wants to borrow a futureman from us just call - considering how skinny and weak they are nowadays i could probably snag one easily in some sort of homemade butterfuly or hair net contraption, pack him up in the fedex small size and on your doorstep by tomorrow, fully accessorized.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Active Rock!

Love at the Pier (Arthur), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

Where in New York City would one find this Active Rock?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

He looks like andy dick

hector (hector), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

he went to the owen wilson academy for pinched yet bulbous nose applications. i have no idea what i'm talking about anymore

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

see! or the andy dick sister school of same fuckin thing!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

More like "active cock" from the looks of him.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

he looks like my brother

but what about the things he SAYS????

---- (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

i'd rather concentrate on the surface stuff - i can't the rest of it

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, it's a like a cross between one of Interpol and Nathan Barley.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know those folks, but do they want their own pussies too? god, i didn't realized i had so much hate inside.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd say he has about the greatest possible ratio of effort to success in looking cool.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Do you miss the bygone era of studly cowboy men Susan?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Shouldn't a music industry rep do something other than read the NME?

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

An hour to get ready every day? Chuck this fucker on the catwalk already.

(Sometimes I actually take two minutes to get ready.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

His look screams high school kid going to a costume party.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

his pea coat has one pocket too many. it is because he is an arthropod

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

This is that Wolf Eyes John Olsen guy, right?

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

xpost - i just know men are going to be sooooo much worse as girls than girls are - especially straight men who are girls. really the only people responsible enought to act like girls are gay men. now i've offended everyone!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Its fun to be bitchy sometimes!

hector (hector), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

I got halfway through the interview before I realised it wasn't a parody.
Dude's taken the whole metrosexual thing into asexual territory, which is never good. Creeeeeepy.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Dear Susan,

You are my new favorite poster. Please email me your address so I can marry you.

xoxox

Leeenge de Bruijn (Leee), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I came up with a new slang term today: GOP, which stands for "Gay on paper". It's kind of like a broader version of "metrosexual," as in, the person has all the descriptive characteristics of a gay person without being gay.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

http://www.joric.com/Hitler-1.jpg

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

thx Leeenge! i don't mind straight men who like fashion or even effeminate straight men who like fashion (at all) its mostly the clone aspect of it all. infact its just that they are all wearing the same ill fitting cloat and brown or black matte skinny slacks and shag hairdo and they are meaner and nastier than all the HEATHERS combined. GOP - thats a good one. i'll be thinking 'girls on paper'

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps I should be glad that I'm just not of the build to wear skinny-boy slacks.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

yes you should

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

how many "temping, couch-surfers" have their own dermatologist? this kid's a flaming trustafarian.

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Really? When I saw that he went to Skidmore, I immediately assumed need scholarship

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Skid row.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

i think he got a scholarship and also got a scholarship one into the GOP world. the only good thing i can say about him is he's not very savvy unless he's trying to be ironic. but my guess is he's not and the REAL gop boys will now disown him. any selfrespecting GOP clone KNOWS you don't lay it all on the line like that. you pretend its all natural. you NEVER talk about the fashion or the khiels. NEVER!!! so atleast there is some earnestness there. i'm warming to him slightly b/c he's the underdog

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

You like underdogs? Read the "Does anyone have any contacts at Matador?" thread. You'll love me. I'm still kind of pissed/disenchanted about it. fuxxors.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't like them anymore

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

ok this is my last post. sorry PT that was mean. however, i think people need their underdogs to appear ambitionless and uncalculating even tho thats kind of dumb and unfair. but maybe you can use that logic when approaching matador. goodbye!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

ole!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

gratzi.. it turns out i can't do the matador thing, anyway. i got involved with this, er, theatre company thing that's going to preclude me from doing anything but shkspr. until jan. '06 at least.. so, everyone can stop forwarding me all their hot contacts.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

don't bite the hand that feeds you, underdog. -ok that's truly my last post

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

You know, I used to think it was a figure of speech, but this guy really does make my knuckles itch. It's uncanny.

Telephonething, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

What are you wearing today?
"[...] I sort of tend to follow the trendy aspects of things."

[...]

Which rock star has the most style?
"I guess Gwen Stefani. She doesn’t follow trends."

hahahahaha

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Why do A&R guys know nothing about music?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

hahaha Joseph OTM.

also:
What’s active rock?
"It’s a more hard-core form of rock music."

How is it different from hard rock?
"I don’t know. I guess there is no difference."

?!?!?!??!??jfgklahjk;R?

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I got halfway through the interview before I realised it wasn't a parody.

I cannot buy that this isn't a parody.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

This might be an Other Music clerk having a laugh.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I bought it, and I still think there could be such a person, but you just might be right. Remember the Subpop grunge slang hoax, or whatever it was?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

"It’s called Wind-Up Records"

having a laugh.
Or having a wind-up!

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Would they really seriously print anything so vapid & shalloooowwww... Oh.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Damn, that's actually the real label name!

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

other issues aside, kiehl's conditioner for extra dry hair with added coconut is really, really good.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

...Oh, it's New York Magazine.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

It's just too perfect -- his dermatologist, whom he mentions by name, has his own line of skin care products. Only occasionally does he spend more than an hour trying on potential outfits for the day. And all this while he is doing post-grad couch surfing and temping. Still – wouldn't the magazine be in on the joke?

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

uh guys?

http://www.winduprecords.com/

Trip Ster, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

How is it different from hard rock?
I don’t know. I guess there is no difference. Is that your favorite kind of music?

Haha, OMG. I can't decide if "is that your favorite kind of music?" sounds hopeful or utterly patronizing.

I actually kind of enjoy everything. That’s why I wanted to be in the music industry.

He thought it would be fun to have a cushy A&R job shocker!!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

He may have been hamming it up a bit, but this is a regular column in New York. It's as hateful as it appears.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes, and a non-humorous one at that.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Still – wouldn't the magazine be in on the joke?

I'm not sure New York Magazine is ever completely in on the joke.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

None of the previous columns were quite as moronic as this one. Although, they're all pretty close. Example:
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/shopping/fashion/columns/look/11657/

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Do your parents give you a clothing allowance?
I earn most of my own money. They give me money to feed myself, but, of course, you never really spend your money the way your parents want.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Yes, through her INTERNSHIPS she earns enough money to have a single outfit containing Gucci, Barney's, Louis, and Celine.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

To put it in perspective, the demographic for New York is people in their 30's-40's who have a lot of disposable income. They are very interested in what "the hip kids are doing," i.e. they will spend tons of $$$ in order to feel like they are still 'relevant.' Almost everyone who reads this rag takes this column as seriously as cancer.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

OTM

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

There are no knives big enough.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

It makes me so sad that these people stay rich. They're born rich, and then they get nice rich jobs and all the while they just laze around richely.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Keith, actually I've lived in NYC for eleven years, and this guy is bad even for NYC.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I agree it's extreme, but you really think it's fake?

And for the record, if it is totally fake and he was indeed playing a joke on them, then let me be the first to say this guy is a genius.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Where's Alex when his vitriol is needed?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

jesus hell!

no, sadly this fool (and the coldsore his dermatologist is seemingly powerless against) is real and of a breed of young new yorkers i sadly have to deal with regularly. it's best to ignore them and the actively crap music they perpetuate.

b b, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it is a joke. I wouldn't have suspected, except it's WIND-UP RECORDS he works for. Come on.

There are a disturbingly large number of music sites that use the term "active rock," apparently. I had no idea this genre even existed, and suddenly it's everywhere, kind of like Karl Rove's 4 million new evangelical voters. WTF?

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Where's Alex when his vitriol is needed?
Indeed. And, I don't want to kill the meme before it has a chance to propagate, but I have a feeling this expression will come in handy in the near future.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

When come back, Alex, bring fire.

moley, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

What are you wearing today?
"[...] I sort of tend to follow the trendy aspects of things."

[...]

Which rock star has the most style?
"I guess Gwen Stefani. She doesn’t follow trends."

This reminds me of a great Bruno segment on the Ali-G show where he gets the fashion designers to say a seemingly endless stream of totally contradictory soundbytes.

My mind cannot accept that these people are real either. How can L.A. people be accused of being the phony ones when people like this exist in the world?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was just about to make the same reference to the Bruno episode!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it is a joke. I wouldn't have suspected, except it's WIND-UP RECORDS he works for. Come on.

I'm not sure how people on this thread keep managing to miss the fact that Wind-Up is not only a "real label," but the record label of Evanescence and Creed.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

And Alter Bridge! What does that name mean?

Love at the Pier (Arthur), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

I always thought that mook rock labels would have reallu hip mooks working for them not trust fund hipsters....

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

It's the one thing that jumped out at me, actually, which was why I brought it up. Wind-Up Records, of all the record labels to work for - shouldn't he be kind of embarrassed about promoting ACTIVE RAWK if he's into the Arcade Fire and etc? I thought Wind-Up would get a guy looking like Carson Daly or something. Sorry.. it's reflexive.. in my corny indie college radio days we'd always be like oh shit, another album from Wind-Up.. why do they even send us these.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Maybe all the apparent contradictions just point to the this guy being some sort of Teenage Zelig.

Teenage in the Kim Fowley sense of course.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

i think he looks nice =]
