The ILM ULTIMATE Guide series - CDR700 or DVD-R

Following on from the hugely successful Rough Guide threads from early 2004, this is the next level. You are invited to select a subject, compile and present a tracklisting for a CD-R OR DVD-R packed to the rafters with tracks that correspond to the subject chosen. These can then be offered, requested and distributed as you see fit.

Please note that years have already been covered on ILM - I'll link to the threads for these but I think almost every year between 1973 and 2003 has been covered hasn't it? Also several people presented their 'My favourites' type CD-Rs although I suspect many would relish a chance to redo these (I know I would).

But this still leaves genres, styles, trends, themes, influences...plenty of scope. You can be as ambitious as you want (I.M.'s 1981 boxset being a remarkable example of how far you can go), with DVD being the real challenge (tho there's a risk of 'laziness' in just filling them up with whatever).

I am salivating at the prospect of bona-fide CD-Rs devoted to grime, noise, the tracks mentioned on the 'Y'all ready for this?!' thread etc.!

Awright! I can expand on my "post-punk" 2-CD thingy from way back when! Pre-Franz, even! How much can a DVD hold?

That would be an awesome idea!

Some of us wrote "Top 100 songs of the 90's" lists following the 90's poll ... after doing this, I started putting together a CDR of my list. Eventually, I plan to offer it for public consumption.

I'd also like to have a go at expanding my Ambient Rough Guide into a CDR sometime.

Why no inclination to participate, out of curiosity? Just busy-ness?

Pretty much. One of these days when I've put everything in my collection on my computer then perhaps it'll be easier to do, but I'm just a terrible anthologizer.

I believe Mr. Snrub has been keeping a running list of all the songs from that thread.

I remember some bloggers pulling out a few when they linked to the initial thread, though they might've just been random examples - I think my "Steve Albini, Engineer" one got namechecked, & I'm not sure it's that good (tho I like it).

I'll go ahead and throw my 1981 set into the ring, though it focuses on post-punk/rock/pop/diy/hardcore/electropop/indie/etc., and doesn't cover R&B, Hip-Hop, etc. It's currently at 408 artists, 482 tracks. I'm pretty sure it would fit on a DVD-R.

Your opinion, please: 366-band, 411 track 1981 box set

D'oh--didn't catch that I was already thrown in. Must read more carfully. Thanks : )

four years pass...

Four years later and already, sending little discs through the mail seems a bit outdated.

What would be your hypothetical method? Flash drives through the mail? Abusing the hell out of megamediashare Web sites? Funny that I.M. is the last one on this thread since I might have seen a blog somewhere with his paws on it.

I'd vote for tying all my mp3s to a brick and throwing it through my monitor, but that's just me.

ah man who doesn't still love receiving little discs through the mail?

I'm running out on a spool I've been pulling discs off of for the past two years, and I'm having a hard time coming up with a good reason to buy another one.

If I want to listen to something at work, I put it on my flash drive. If I want to send someone some tunes, I send them a filesharing link.

The only reason I would burn a CD is because the car has a CD player and my ipod's broke. But I listen to Traffic On The Nines more than anything on my commute.

Haha, yeah, it's good to sortof take stock of these things once in awhile. My iPod is broken as well...headphone jack doesn't work, so it's become just something to keep plugged in to the computer. This has really changed my listening habits and yeah I even burned some CD's recently, which I never do anymore. Another side effect is I keep moving my computer between the living room & bedroom over and over! LOL
