vs. With Teeth vs. Make Believe vs. whatever the new Audioslave album is called.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Funny — I don't really know either of these records, but I always thought of things in this equation:

Beck/Beastie Boys = Captain Beefheart/Tom Waits

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

5 Boroughs is complete garbage

Never thought the beasties would fall so hard

jj, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

GUERO!

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Guero has its share of redeeming qualities. Boroughs has none at all.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

"Beck/Beastie Boys = Captain Beefheart/Tom Waits "
considering the chronology, this should be:
Beastie Boys:Beck::Beefheart:Waits

"To The 5 Boroughs" was the worst album I heard in 2004.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised by how respectable 'Guero' actually is. The slow, sad songs feel much more honest than any of the ones on his "Slow Sad Record" from a few years ago.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

To The 5 Boroughs was just such a shameless attempt to "return to form". Guero seemed kinda like that at first, but really I think it's his most in-the-right-now album yet.

Guero works because Beck is all grown up now, whereas To The 5 Boroughs was like grandpas' desperate grasps for the last of their adolescence.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Who's releasing Make Believe?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Weezer.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

And the more I hear "Beverly Hills," the more I actually like it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Guero. And really, isn't TT5B "I Love The 80s" anyway?

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

"Guero," no contest. No fan of Beck's post-Mutations albums, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this. PeopleFunnyBoy is OTM about how the slow songs feel honest and true. Now I think it'll end up in my top 15 or 20 of the year.

The only song that still grates on me is "Hell Yes."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I haven't even heard Guero, and I'm choosing Guero.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Guero in this one. The new gorillaz is better backpacker hiphop than either of these.

jason., Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

With that second statement you killed any desire to hear all three of those again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about "backpacker hip-hop", but that new Gorillaz album is shaping up to be way more great than it deserves to be.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that was a pretty lazy statement.

jason., Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

To The 5 Boroughs had better lyrics. Sad, no?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Really the only thing wrong with To The 5 Boroughs was the lack of an outside ear to tell them to make the beats a little harder if they're gonna rap like that and maybe you guys might want to do another take you kinda tripped up there MCA. The raw goods remained. Beck's just kinda empty.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I mean that while Guero might be a better listen, I'm guessing To The 5 Boroughs + the Dust Brothers would beat it.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

People forget that To The 5 Boroughs was the first time Mario C wasn't there to keep it clean

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

haha so guero is only better to listen to but on every other score to the 5 bouroughs beats it? what's that mean - it's a better coaster?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

People forget that To The 5 Boroughs was the first time Mario C wasn't there to keep it clean

OH HELLS NO I DIDN'T FORGET

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

What stands out to me though about Guero is, where I was expecting Odelay v2.0 with a more boring Beck, instead I got a watered-down Dust Brothers "we've-been-doing-this-and-remained-'innovative'-for-15-years-now" production with a surprisingly mature, yet not boring for it, Beck.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

ts: bridges to babylon vs. guero

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

How the hell did "Send a Message to Her" not make the cut for Guero? It's easily the best thing on the deluxe edition.

jason., Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I just don't get the lukewarm critical response that Guero's gotten. "Missing"? "Que Onda Guero"? "Earthquake Weather"? "Rental Car"? These are great songs, people!

To the Five Boroughs is pretty bad, but I do like "Ch-Check It Out".

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

How the hell did "Send a Message to Her" not make the cut for Guero? It's easily the best thing on the deluxe edition.

Agreed, which is one of the reasons why I prefer the pre-release bootleg to the real album.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

i'll probably never listen to either of these all the way through

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard either of these albums and I like Guero better!

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Guero beats 5 Boroughs by a mile, but on the other hand Buddhism beats Scientology by two. IT'S A DRAW! EVERYONE LOSES COMES OUT EVEN!
