jesus, talk about overload. someone has got to tell this guy to stop releasing albums every six months. especially when they all sound the same.....

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

It's a body of work.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

An ugly, pasty, misshapen body.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone actually heard anything from the new one yet?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

condemnation comes first..

naturally!

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

devandra fans tired of buying devandra albums should go buy these instead: http://www.unhappylake.com (no they are not by him, but they are similar, in a sense, though I think they're better. they're all handmade as well).

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Genuine handcarved CDs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't there a thread recently about the good old days in the 70s when artists put out multiple albums per year, back before the record industry staggered everything into 2-3 year gaps?

Maybe the guy should spend a little more time on songcraft, but how long does it take to make a folk song? I would hope that such a performer would be a lot more productive than a band that relies on a lot of careful and complicated orchestration and precision. I'm not really convinced that his stuff would be any better if he took more time, or was more discerning about what songs he releases and what he shelves.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd thought of Devendra on the "each album is better than the last" thread. If the trend continues, this one should be pure bliss.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

i'd have to argue the opposite. you thought nino rojo was better than rejoicing in hands???yikes....

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Since Nino Rojo and Rejoicing in the Hands were both recorded at the same time it doesn't really make sense to look for a progression there.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

the new album is being mixed..so unless sumone dropped leaks..noone has heard the new one yet..It has a fullness to it that will be refreshing to haters and some great lyrics as well..There is enuff for 2 records at this stage..so perhaps a recall to the multiple album releasing actions of yore is in order after all..oh and u can just buy other records too and change the station blablabalablabla

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

dan, ...did you ever send me that bunnybox?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Since Nino Rojo and Rejoicing in the Hands were both recorded at the same time it doesn't really make sense to look for a progression there.

Yeah, I know. But the collection of songs designated for Nino Rojo seems better, thus the perceived progression.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

the devendra camp has been very enthusiastic about the recent recordings. (granted, thats the camp and camps tend to be enthusiastic, especially the sort that pitch their tents round beardoes).

some people will find it banal, others rubish, and others yet-- genius.

b b, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

It's not just bearding(bonding amongst those with beards)..It's a enthusiasm for music and pushing over stale dominoes to see where they fall..The new stuff is not th least bit banal..It's more pointed and stronger and every bit of what "critics" would expect from an artist who gave them some hope that they would get better with each album.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

dan

ive heard that some significant things occured but also knew what the rsponse would be if i just said "ive heard from people involved that some amazing stuff was recorded"...from conversations ive had im quite excited to hear wats coming. and i think that excitement is entirely correct.

in reviewing one of the last couplet i almost included something along the lines of, "if you fail to be charmed by this you have problems"...part of me still feels that way even if we must allow some level of to each their own.

"bearding" -- excellent! hah

b b, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I am th first one to "each his own" people..I can only Dan Rather you that th sessions were full of good stuff..not samey and not gamy..yu will like it..

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

mr. inside scoop declares it "not samey", let's hope so.

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

its not so inside scoopey...as i aint heard nuthin in my own ears..just reports from some people who wandered upstate and have done.

chances are, theres gonna be some "samey" stuff for sure

and when yr dealing with hippies theres bound to be a wiff of the gamey about the air.

b b, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Showers were in full effect for the sessions..The only thing that was gamy was some of the more softer cheeses..As for samey,it's the same voice.same guitar..but given a charged and well arranged thrust into th ear that is exciting

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

i could be really into him if there was less fanciful warbling. seems affected. would love to hear him just straight forward sing and drop the act....b/c the guitars and melodies I often find quite nice, it's the sentiment behind it and vocals that irritate me

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Wheres this news come from? Not on the Young God records, and all google brought up was the news of a split LP with just 5 Devendra tracks on, out in May. Is there a new full length LP due too?

dmun, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Today's Pitchfork has it.
I hope on this one there's lots of songs like "At the Hop," which is weird and catchy.

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Not on the Young God records

He's signed on to Beggars Banquet, I believe. (Amicable parting, Gira said that YG could only do so much.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I was just listening to "Rejoicing..." this morning and thinking "this is great! I need to catch up with....all the others since this!".

I still wish he sounded more like the first record, though.

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

the new stuff is a result of having been immersed in hard woods..very pine tar oriented..it'll be out fallish is the hope..and its the next step..can u dig it?

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I dig it all.

Hadn't heard that he'd signed with Beggars Banquet. Perhaps this means a US tour with the Queens of Sheeba might happen in the fall!
