Bands and artists whose stage banter, personal life, public life or "mythology" taints their music (in your opinion).

I had to start this thread because I saw Wolf Eyes tonight and their stage banter made me want to fucking smash their faces with one of their noise chains. They bullshitted with each other before they played for TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES! I wouldn't mind it if they were funny or even cool, but they were douches.. It went something like:

"Look at this dudes shoes.. Shit, throw them shits up here.. These are some crazy shits, dude! You cain't have 'em back, man."
"Know any jokes? Why does Michael Jackson shop at K-Mart? [audience mumble] Y'already know that one? Anyone else? You?"
"I can't play with this shoe shit up here!"
"When does your semester end? Hahaha.. Do you have to write paper tonight? Haha.. Are you on spring break? Haha.. Do you guys have finals? Haha.."
"Them security guards are some Third Reich motherfuckers.. We got busted earlier."

If any of that sounded funny-- it wasn't. The first set was great, but I left as soon as they started another banter break. Their dialogue is more grating than their music!

A better, alternative title for this thread would be, "Bands you liked more before you found about more about them."

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

how about "this is the thread where we need to get over ourselves"

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

what does that mean?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Is poortheatre IN Wolf Eyes, R?

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

were they iced out, these chains?

I liked Scream Club more before i found out about the whole "Money Chant" thing they do.

Kevin Erickson, Thursday, 14 April 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

stage banter is an odd one. too long and, yea, its irritating. especially if its unfunny or grating. i havent really seen many bands that bother too much with the between songs banter. man or astroman do a lot of it, but, they get away with it, for real (despite, in a way, it sort of being the opposite of what they should do - while at the same time as being exactly what they SHOULD do). but, yea, its not many that can get away with a whole bunch of stuff in between (no matter how good the music)

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 April 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

kingfish, they quit their day jobs.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Michael Jackson to thread, obv.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Every time Ive seen Wolf Eyes their stage banter has been at a bear minimum. Last time they said "we're tired" and then rocked.

Did you notice the new guy? He's slightly more of an ogre, and reminds me 100% of one of the death metal kids from high school. He has a different feel to him. Most of the times I saw them was in Detroit, where they knew 3/4ths of the audience, and would basically just scream "FUCK YOU" a bunch of times.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

The Beck/Scientology thing is still creeping me out and I'm less excited about his new record because of it.

And hearing about Prefuse being a dick on various ILM threads also made me less interested in checking out one of his records.

For some reason, though, the longer the time between the bad behavior and the music, the less it bothers me. I will still always love Off the Wall, even if MJ is indeed a horrible kidtoucher.

NO DILLOWAY, NO GOOD

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

"ask them if half of them still work at encore records"

Yes, they do - as does half of Saturday Looks Good To Me and the Ghostly International crew. Is this supposed to be a slant, though, because Encore is the f**ng shit man!

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Also, I think if Wolf Eyes were trying to get past their day jobs, they'd make records that DIDN'T automatically conjure images of charred wreckage and mechanical vermin devouring your spleen. They'd make fist-pumping, beer-commercial friendly ANTHEMS like their former bandmate, Andrew Wilkes-Krier.

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

they said last night they quit their day jobs.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

This thread actually makes me look forward even more to seeing them in Victoriaville next month.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

anyway poortheatre if you had some balls you would've yelled out "Tarheels kicked the Spartanz's ASSES!" you douchebag.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

my favorite stage banter is from the Sadies, which amounts to, "And now the Sadies will play (insert song title)!"

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

"they said last night they quit their day jobs" - I guess more folks like charred wreckage and rabid vermin more than I'd guessed. I kind of doubt that they care much for basketball, though. Even so, it is a general rule that we here in Ann Arbor frown upon those Spartans and their attempts at athletic distinction.

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

tarheels?

why, i was in chapel hill just a week or so ago

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

DILLOWAY'S IN NEPAL, DUDE.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

haha, looking at the thread title, i wondered whether the person had been to the show last night. however, for me the banter would have to last so much longer. it strikes me as something that could possibly be absolutely ridiculously long. last night's wasn't.

poortheatre, you missed all the best stage banter though! it all came after the end of the set.

"DILLOWAY'S IN NEPAL, DUDE." - Fine, but find me an another illustrative photo of a currently performing member of Wolf Eyes using a "noise chain."

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah connelly sucks

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Nate was using a "noise chain" last night. doubt you could smash anyone's face in with it though

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Connelly was the only one fist pumping along with all the angry kids. it's pretty funny in retrospect.

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

connelly does have enthusiasm, i'll give him that, but he's no DILLOWAY.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

hstencil, i should have told you i was going so you could just spit on me in person.

ummm cat power anyone?

haha, when i saw her live, breezy, after all the usual rigamarole, she crawled out into the audience during a song and lay on the floor and smoked a cigarette. i see what you're saying, but i don't mind her for some reason-- maybe because i'm not entirely sure if it's bullshit or not and i'd rather err on the side of, you know, gentleman haha

That Connelly guy was great! He was joking around and what-not without the condescension. Listening to the other two was like being forced to talk to some sardonic hipster at a party, but I couldn't walk away. I wanted to say, "We invited you here because we like you, so you can you not treat us like shit?" It's like that scene in Don't Look Back where Dylan's talking to that reporter/"scientist" and you just want to fucking shake him and say, "Could you just answer his goddamn questions? Does everything you do have to be some exercise in superiority?"

I'll shut up because I'm obviously making too much of this/little sense (Wolf Eyes : Dylan whaa?) and i shouldn't really give a shit and who care if some group fucks around on stage but i thought i'd explain myself.

poortheatre, you missed all the best stage banter though! it all came after the end of the set.

Oh god haha.. Are you on the program board? We've probably met before. I know all those guys/gals.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 15 April 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Connelly ... he was like Kevin Eubanks without a microphone, except he'd actually talk to say a few words that weren't "ha ha" here and there. the other two were at least saying something funny once in a while.

and poortheatre, I am so not on the program board. I only heard about this on monday from some people handing out flyers at Cantor. If I were on the program board, I would've have a lot more shows in the Spring then these fuckers. although i must say that it would be very funny/interesting regardless if we have met.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 15 April 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

At our last show, in front of a sold-out crowd no less (we got a spot opening for Robyn Hitchcock), our singer delivered this bon mot:

"Yeah, so we're from New Brunswick. New Brunswick ... there've been a lot of rapes there lately."

Our bass player (trying in vain to save face for us): "Yeah, there's a lot of crime where I live. Someone just got stabbed around the corner from me."

Dudes were funny. They did not rock appropriately, though. Connelly contributed useful things to the 7% of the set that had rhythm, and absolutely nothing useful to the quieter jammy parts (which mostly sucked anyway.)

yea, i knew steve. he meandered into my room a couple of times and said what's up, but we never really talked that much. i'm still pretty good friends with your old RA, so I was kind of involved with all that. i also know you through a certain ILM poster (rockaction) that also lived on my floor last year and has the same name as a character in the Cosby show and often wears Stooges shirts with the sleeves rolled up (at least, he used to, before the hipsters with their felt blazers got to him). know who i'm talking about? you all used to hang out on the roof. e-mail me if you wanna talk some more or whatever. if you're in music, you probably know friedman and cole, too.

sorry everyone else that's reading this thread :)

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

Hard to phrase exactly what I'm talking about here but this is the thread for bands whose image/name/logo as seen on tshirts, posters, etc has taken on a life of its own to the point that you could see someone wearing this band's shirt and you wouldn't even necessarily think the person was a fan of the band. Brought to mind by some reality show douche wearing a Miles Davis tee, but like no one thought Rachel from Friends was a big MC5 fan because she wore the tshirt; High school kids wear AC/DC and Motorhead shirts, but do they actually listen to the band?; the Misfits logo has been ubiquitous for some time...
