Erol Alkan's long awaited mix CD 'A Bugged Out Mix' will be released on 25th April (with 3LP format following on 2nd May). The 2CD package demonstrates 2 sides of the Trash/Bugged Out resident: A Bugged Out Mix (CD1) perfectly captures Erol as if at a Bugged Out party, featuring electronic dancefloor tracks from some of hottest names in the scene. In stark contrast, A Bugged In Selection (CD2) delves deep into Erol's vast personal record collection, taking you on a wonderfully chilled journey through a wide range of rarities and surprises, both old and new.

I just slsked the second disc last night and am very excited to listen to it (didn't put it on the mp3 player today b/c I need to listen to Abe Duque's new one in prep for tomorrow night!)

Knowing that this is how he is thought of kinda makes me like him better, since I pretty much want to be an 18 yo London club kid, right now anyway.

i don't quite understand all the hating, but yeah i guess he's received totally differently in the UK. i just wish he'd come to NYC more often.

he's an amazing dj technically and 'feel'wise, totally the opposite of trying to be hip or trying to be anything really, an ex indie kid who always dresses in scruffs and @ trash parties each december he still queues up in the cold to meet each person and their guest and say 'hi'.

Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve is by some distance the best thing Erol's been involved with for at least five years, mostly because proggy Balearic psych-folk edits >>>>>>>>>>> the shit he usually plays.

I don't know what he usually plays! That's the thing.

Like I said, the last time I hear him DJ, he was playing all mad 60s psych and prog and krautrock. (Though mind you, at Bugged Out he was playing kind of identikit disco - but I was in such a bad mood that night that I wasn't prepared to give anything a chance.)

I don't think I'd ever be head over heels abt this album but it made me actively want to hear 'Young Folks' which is an achievement of sorts at this stage

I want to know more about Dust Galaxy - I kept thinking they were Young Galaxy as I was listening to it, and thinking "this is way too psychedelic for them..."

But the problem is, the original songs I have listened to (Tracey Thorn sticks out) are not as good as the originals. I mean, they made me actually *like* a Goldfrapp song from the album I listened to once and filed.

But the Bears Are Coming mix - the original of which was one of my fave songs of the past year - was really disappointing. (Probably because I'm so fond of the orig.)

Also, that OOOOOEEEEEEOOOUUUUUUUUWWWWOOOSH filter that turns into a weird whistling noise that they use on EVERY. SINGLE. MIX. = totally The. Business. It's so Hawkwind.

the midlake remix is the best of these, i reckon.

the last non-BtWS set of erol's that i've heard was the hilariously crunchy live @ global gathering 2007 mix, which was kind of an end-point for that whole ed banger/kitsune stuff for me.

I *hate* the Midlake song - I keep skipping it.

Is Young Folks ridiculous sped up, or do PB&J really *sound* like that? If so, wettest tweeboys ever.

the unofficial edits series that got BtWS attention in the first place are all worth tracking down too kate - some of them were compiled on this CD, no idea how easy that is to get though.

phonica had that BTWS 'Ark' compilation as well, as someone mentioned on the beardo thread, it misses off a few tracks from their singles but it's got some great stuff on there, although some of it doesn't really add much or alter the originals (if it's possible to add to 'path through the forest' etc!)

Phonica's website says it's sold out of Ark 1.

Had another friend who said she ordered it, and it never turned up, apparently. (Don't know where from, though.)

Rough Trade is probably your best bet for Ark 1- they still had it the last time I checked.

I'm kind of.., intrigued... to find more of this stuff. But the words "ibiza" and "balearic" are just natural turnoffs to me. I just like the idea of music better when it comes from Dusseldorf or Birmingham. Less of that awful horrible sunshine. I hate bands from LA for the same reason.

haven't really followed erol for a while, but the new 'another bugged out mix/selection' is really doing it for me. not as zeitgeist-y as the original but excellent all the same.

his pre-Manics DJ set from the Holy Bible shows a couple of weeks back. proper excited about this.
