Erol Alkan's long awaited mix CD 'A Bugged Out Mix' will be released on 25th April (with 3LP format following on 2nd May). The 2CD package demonstrates 2 sides of the Trash/Bugged Out resident: A Bugged Out Mix (CD1) perfectly captures Erol as if at a Bugged Out party, featuring electronic dancefloor tracks from some of hottest names in the scene. In stark contrast, A Bugged In Selection (CD2) delves deep into Erol's vast personal record collection, taking you on a wonderfully chilled journey through a wide range of rarities and surprises, both old and new.
What a tracklisting.

Knowing that this is how he is thought of kinda makes me like him better, since I pretty much want to be an 18 yo London club kid, right now anyway.

i don't quite understand all the hating, but yeah i guess he's received totally differently in the UK. i just wish he'd come to NYC more often.

he's an amazing dj technically and 'feel'wise, totally the opposite of trying to be hip or trying to be anything really, an ex indie kid who always dresses in scruffs and @ trash parties each december he still queues up in the cold to meet each person and their guest and say 'hi'.

I'm scared, scared, scared of posting on an ILM dance thread, because I'll be beaten up for knowing jack shit about techno/house bobbins and Matt DC and Stevem will laugh at me, but, erm...
does anyone want to talk about the BEYOND THE WIZARDS SLEEVE RE-ANIMATIONS album that came out yesterday?
This is what it will take to make me like dance music - a dance DJ that plays Spacemen 3 tracks. Yes.

Phew, tis just Andre 3000 - I thought it was gonna be laughingkidoffthesimpsons.jpg
It's a bit... "Jeez, not everything is Balearic, guys..." but then the prog bits kick in and make me very happy.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 12:50 (seventeen years ago)
Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve is by some distance the best thing Erol's been involved with for at least five years, mostly because proggy Balearic psych-folk edits >>>>>>>>>>> the shit he usually plays.
― Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
the edits basically all do the same trick, but it's a good one
― braveclub, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know what he usually plays! That's the thing.
Like I said, the last time I hear him DJ, he was playing all mad 60s psych and prog and krautrock. (Though mind you, at Bugged Out he was playing kind of identikit disco - but I was in such a bad mood that night that I wasn't prepared to give anything a chance.)
MAD PSYCHEDELIC FLUTE AND DUB ECHO = A++++++++++++ one million
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
backwards guitar is also key
― just sayin, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
Every time their mix of "Love" by Simian fucking Mobile Disco come on, I keep thinking it's The Homosexual by Momus.
EXACTLY the same panting and synth-drum pattern. Nick, you should sue. ;-)
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think I'd ever be head over heels abt this album but it made me actively want to hear 'Young Folks' which is an achievement of sorts at this stage
― Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:05 (seventeen years ago)
I want to know more about Dust Galaxy - I kept thinking they were Young Galaxy as I was listening to it, and thinking "this is way too psychedelic for them..."
But the problem is, the original songs I have listened to (Tracey Thorn sticks out) are not as good as the originals. I mean, they made me actually *like* a Goldfrapp song from the album I listened to once and filed.
But the Bears Are Coming mix - the original of which was one of my fave songs of the past year - was really disappointing. (Probably because I'm so fond of the orig.)
Also, that OOOOOEEEEEEOOOUUUUUUUUWWWWOOOSH filter that turns into a weird whistling noise that they use on EVERY. SINGLE. MIX. = totally The. Business. It's so Hawkwind.

The Art Bears Are Coming mix on the other hand...

The Art Brut Are Coming.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:14 (seventeen years ago)
the midlake remix is the best of these, i reckon.
the last non-BtWS set of erol's that i've heard was the hilariously crunchy live @ global gathering 2007 mix, which was kind of an end-point for that whole ed banger/kitsune stuff for me.
― resident advice whore (haitch), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:16 (seventeen years ago)
I *hate* the Midlake song - I keep skipping it.
Is Young Folks ridiculous sped up, or do PB&J really *sound* like that? If so, wettest tweeboys ever.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:19 (seventeen years ago)
it's a good bit quicker, iirc.
the unofficial edits series that got BtWS attention in the first place are all worth tracking down too kate - some of them were compiled on this CD, no idea how easy that is to get though.
― resident advice whore (haitch), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:28 (seventeen years ago)
>10, Path Through The Forest
AS IN THE FACTORY ?!?!?!?ASOIDFJAJKFH ASJKDFB ADSJFBC HJAWEFCNABV JZDMN ,MCVXN DJNF
WANT WANT WANT - NO - THAT'S NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!
I wonder if it's the same stuff that's on "Erol's Psychedelic Boutique" - which I have been trying, through bribery and outright begging to get off a friend of mine, but she was given it by one of LOTP under the express condition that she didn't share it with anyone.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:32 (seventeen years ago)
you can pick up that edits cd at rough trade, that's where i got it
― just sayin, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 14:32 (seventeen years ago)
phonica had that BTWS 'Ark' compilation as well, as someone mentioned on the beardo thread, it misses off a few tracks from their singles but it's got some great stuff on there, although some of it doesn't really add much or alter the originals (if it's possible to add to 'path through the forest' etc!)
― vain_bowers, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
Phonica's website says it's sold out of Ark 1.
Had another friend who said she ordered it, and it never turned up, apparently. (Don't know where from, though.)
Oh god, am I going to have to wade through that Beardo thread?
I refuse to believe there's a genre called beardo disco even less than I believe in space disco.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:00 (seventeen years ago)
Rough Trade is probably your best bet for Ark 1- they still had it the last time I checked.
― Telephone thing, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)
can you get in trouble for posting YS1's of stuff that was a bit dubious whether they had permission to edit in the first place?
― vain_bowers, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:14 (seventeen years ago)
God, that means I'll have to leave the house. NOOOOOOOOO... it took every fibre of my being to go up the street to the Turkish deli and I'm not going out again any time soon.
So, basically, am I right in thinking that Beardo Disco = Club Kosmische with an 808?
I'm kind of.., intrigued... to find more of this stuff. But the words "ibiza" and "balearic" are just natural turnoffs to me. I just like the idea of music better when it comes from Dusseldorf or Birmingham. Less of that awful horrible sunshine. I hate bands from LA for the same reason.
― Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:15 (seventeen years ago)
You can't YSI at all on ILX... but you can email me about it! :-D
hint hint double clue!
Aaaahhh... I just Ark 1 this afternoon. It's luuuuurrrrvvvvely.
It makes me so happy I can't even describe...

haven't really followed erol for a while, but the new 'another bugged out mix/selection' is really doing it for me. not as zeitgeist-y as the original but excellent all the same.
