...and I was a fan!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I assume you mean classic as in "so dud beyond belief, fucking double dud so that that the dudness cancels itself out and actually becomes classic" right?

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha....no. I'll defened the ridiculous over-the-topness of the late, great Plasmatics `til I die (and maintain that Beyond the Valley of 1984 and Metal Priestess have some great moments on them), but this record just hit bottom (the cover of Motorhead's "No Class" briefly held hope, but alas...nay). That said, I think Coup D'Etat's utterly ridiculous cover was positively hilarious and brilliant.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Worst! Album! Ever!

I don't even think the cover art is so hot there. Why would anyone want to listen to what those yutzos might have to say?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

FWIW, I owned that album....being a recovering La's fan. Have since sold it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, I liked the cover. Perhaps it's just me. Music absolutely fucking terrrible, though.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

How bout Thomas Pynchon writing the liner notes for a mediocre album by Lotion. It's not cover art, I know (and I still can't quite believe it's Pynchon, either)...

I'll concur on that point, sadly. I had high hopes. Supposedly, that guy's back in the re-formed La's.

"rock and roll remains one of the last honorable callings," says Pynchon.

I could never understand why Thomas Pychon -- an author of considerable vision -- got excited about the drabbest of bands (that being Lotion). Boggles my mind to this day.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. Its seems like he has good taste otherwise (wrote amazing liner notes for Spike Jones). Maybe it's a clever ploy to mystify us.

That first 1 is real proper. Don't think you'se guys really got the grasp on any the others though.

Can't find a proper example yet though, but I will. But that Plasmatics album cover reaaallly is sumthing. I'd buy it cheap & be pretty happy even if I never listened.
I DID have a couple things like that--records that I never really listened to but just liked the covers, but it wasn't specifically because the music was abhorrent. I'll think of 1 though.

Not "fucking terrible", but still extremely overrated:

Okay, okay... it's not a terrible album. But it's great cover-art on a mediocre album. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005OAIL.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

***breathless, in mortal shock at seeing the Gary Numan Berserker sleeve on a computer screen for the first time***

Also...

FWIW, I owned that album....being a recovering La's fan. Have since sold it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAaaaa. Identify with this. Never bought the album but it seems to me I'd heard the first few Cast singles and yeah...nothing ever really caught fire about Cast for me, also a recovering La's fan.

don, Friday, 15 April 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Geez, guys...I've hated about 50% of the covers so far! (But what the fuck do I know?)

X-post - Yeah, what is up with Pynchon? He also liked the utterly useless Little Charlie & The Nightcats enough to immortalize 'em in "Vineland"! But I guess he redeemed himself with his liner notes for Borbetomagus and Spike Jones.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I'd say that Cannibal Corpse sleeve is pretty shit as well. Musically, they're indefensible, but they have had some interesting sleeves.....but that ain't one of'em.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Made sense for Pynchon to do liners for the Borbetos since D Miller and B Doherty's pre-Borbeto band, Sick Dick and the Volkswagens, was pulled from Crying of Lot 49: The band Mucho Maas heard on the radio... "an English group he was fond of at that time but did not believe in."

I thought the 'Thomas Pynchon' liner notes on the Thurston Moore etc. rec were like totally fake
