'Splain me my Kraftwerk opinion so I can decide whether to see them in June!

So I was there at the Kraftwerk show in 90whatever at the State Theatre in Detroit, and I agree with Disco Nihilist about its greatness, but I'm not sure why. I mean, it went against my biggest peeve about a live show in that I felt that most of what I was hearing was prerecorded. BUT it did sound awesome, and was quite a spectacle (visuals, robots, very diverse crowd who were ALL TOTALLY into it!).
Would this upcoming show be as great? Just the 4 of them and their 4 laptops?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 15 April 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good to me! I've heard the boots and I'm not expecting surprises -- just drown me in the visuals. :-)

I'm going up with two friends to the LA show, and Dan Regan is also planning on attending that one...anyone else?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 15 April 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

I was debating this all week and I decided I'm going to go to the NY show (tix on sale tomorrow). You better be good, you crazy robots.

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 15 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

I saw them last april in Montreal, and they did not disappoint. Great crowd, great choons, neato movies, robots, glowing suits, blinking ties. It was brilliant.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

i saw them at coachella last year, and it was one of the highlights, especially the graphics for "Radioactivity" haha

I had an epiphany on the Tour de France suite. Mindblowing

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

kraftwerk + seeing them live = as near a religious experience as i'll ever have

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

Run, don't walk to get tix. Saw them in Miami Nov. '04. Simply stunning sound, visuals and the crowd went mental. The show is divided into 3 parts and just gets more intense as it goes along (and it seems to cover all the songs you're wanting to hear). No encores, but by the finish the crowd is so delirious with pleasure the point seems moot. Kraftwerk rules, OK?

gary shipes, Friday, 15 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Maybe not encores but there are costumr change breaks prior to the pre-recorded 'Robots' segment, the Computer World tracks and the final 'Elektro Cardiogramm/Aerodynamik/Musique Non Stop' sequence.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Saw them here in Toronto last April. Fan-fucking-tastic. The most fun was seeing them break character - they'd very quickly nod and smile (more of a smirk, really) at one another as if to say "Ja, it is sounding not so very bad". Then they'd snap right back into robot mode.

Oh, and my GOD was the sound system ever good.

I saw them in Toronto too, but I was up in the stands and the sound was fucking awful where we were sitting. I love Kraftwerk dearly but I did not love the concert...if you're up for the retro futurism they've been playing with for 25 years, it'll be fantastic, but at the same time I couldn't help but feel like the future had passed them by while they were out on their bicycles. I don't regret going to see it...I mean c'mon, it's KRAFTWERK, but I will admit being disappointed.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Are any of you planning on buying the two cd live album they're puttin out? When I saw this on pitchfork a few days ago I thought to myself "now why would you want that". I mean it sounds like they're primarily a visual thing to behold and with all the prerecordings and whatnot I can't imagine there being much room for error. Do they change the songs live? Just curious.

darin (darin), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

They have changed them somewhat -- I'm actually getting the DVD...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

the abbreviated festival set at coachella last year was the best thing i'd seen in twenty years.

dan (dan), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought Kraftwerk were kind of cool since I first heard of them when I was @ AF High in '96. I was never that big of fan of their music, just that they were really german and liked robots. I saw them last year @ the Warfield (I wasn't that excited about them to be honest because the next night I was going to see the Pixies @ UC Davis [I was VERY excited about that show]). I LOVED the Kraftwerk show. It blew my top! The Pixies were pretty damn dissapointing on another note, I can't explain why. Not only was I impressed with their showmanship but now I'm a huge fan of their music as well. One of the best shows ever.

SRS, Friday, 15 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

So, ya see? The ape-shittedness of (almost) us all about them live remains, despite the pre-recordedness of it all.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I trust Kraftwerk.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 15 April 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I am so getting the DVD

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Pre-Recorded -ness? Jeepers, compared to many "bands" now, just them playing a computer is more interesting than Shitney Tears or Jessi-Can't Sing-son.

Atleast they aren't rip-off rappers, like P. Dippy. If not for stealing hits from Led Zeppelin and The Police, Pee Dipshit wouldn't have a career. Loser. When did TALKING become a skill? Even Shakespeare was talking in rhyme CENTURIES AGO. It's not that impressive or difficult, unless you find it a challenge (which i'm sure most rappers do).

Anyway, that pre-recorded music was pre-recorded BY MUSICIANS in an actual STUDIO with (get this) MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. Even on playback, Kraftwerk rules many, if not all.

D. Thoms, Friday, 15 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

At long last, the ultimate in computer rockism.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Don't be a Dummkopf! Get your Kraftwerk tickets now! Their legendary status is well-earned. They've been around since the 70s. They must be getting old, even for robots.

Dieter, Saturday, 16 April 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

i have to choose between kraftwerk and a night of monolake, mathew jonson, sense club (ricardo villalobos + luciano), gallopierende zuversicht. decisions!

prada robot (disco stu), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

does anyone know if there has been a release date set for minimum maximum?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 13, 2005

KRAFTWERK ANNOUNCE SPRING 2005 TOUR AND FIRST EVER-LIVE RECORDING!

NEW YORK, NY -- Astralwerks is thrilled to announce the release of
Kraftwerk's first-ever official live recording, entitled Minimum
Maximum, on June 7th, as well as a series of live dates.

Kraftwerk is considered one of the most influential bands in pop
history. In a career spanning more than 35 years, the German electro
pioneers have been endlessly saluted and mimicked by each new generation
of innovators. In the 1970s, the post-punk futurists professed their
devotion. In the 1980s & 90s, the leading lights of Chicago house along
with Detroit and Euro-techno paid homage. Possibly the most sampled band
on the planet, their music continues to inspire.

Over the last decade, Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Fritz Hilpert and
Henning Schmitz have toured the world, and in 2003, as rare and splendid
as a returning comet in the night sky, Kraftwerk released Tour De France
Soundtracks. Now in 2005, having already electrified the band's global
army of disciples and following an unforgettable appearance at Coachella
2004, Kraftwerk are returning to perform a short series of shows in DC,
New York, Detroit, Chicago and LA, their first since 1998. Astralwerks
will release a 2-CD live set entitled Minimum-Maximum on June 7th
containing 22 tracks recorded throughout Europe, Japan and the US during
the band's 2004 world tour. Recorded and mixed with Kraftwerk's
legendary precision, Minimum-Maximum features all of the band's classic
compositions alongside their most recent 2004 Billboard Club chart hit
"Aerodynamik".

Re: that Detroit show.... I was there too (I think I was standing next to Ken, actually!). The greatness was the crazy amount of love that was going back and forth from the group to the crowd. I mean, they kept cracking *smiles* when the crowd would cheer. Pretty special moment. That said, no show you go to will compare BUT cmon it's Kraftwerk. Go see them.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 16 April 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

*breathes deeply* Okay, my job for this week fell through and I'm short of money right and I hate the nouveau 9:30 but...I got a ticket for Kraftwerk. (The May 30 show, in case any DC-area people want to FAP before/during/after.)

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

i'll probably get the dvd. I stood behind a couple of really tall men when I saw them last year, so couldn't manage too see half of the video display. I'll just need a projection screen, and 4 tiny models of the band to recreate that live gig.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

yeouch 45 dollars for ticket

Yeah, Yeah. I gots my tix. It'll be great. Maybe not as absofuckinglutely amazing as the last time, but, great is great

peepee (peepee), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely.

I think what was so amazing was the atmosphere of everybody being extremely __GIDDY__ to actually get to see kraftwerk. Most people had written it off, it was just something that you would never actually see. The audience was just completely geeked to be at the show. If was like the combined energy of 2000 six-year-olds locked in a room together waiting to open presents on Christmas morning.

I remember the crowd chanting for 10 minutes before they went on and the crowd chanting for ten minutes after they went off. Boing Boom Tsachk Ping Boing Boom Tsachk Ping...

The other thing was that every person I knew in electronic music that lived within 400 miles of Detroit showed up for that gig. I mean it was like a 10 year High School reunion, EVERYBODY was there. People I knew from Cleveland, Columbus, Chicago, and Toronto. That and for about 35 minutes after the gig everybody in Detroit Techno was hanging outside under the marquee. If a bomb went off that night you would have stopped Detroit music dead in it's tracks. Every producer and DJ in Detroit was there.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 18 April 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm about to buy my tixx for the NYC show now. It's a pretty hefty fee ($45 plus Ticketbastard service charges), but I think (hope?) it'll be worth it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 23 April 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
If anyone in Chicago needs Kraftwerk tickets, let me know. A friend of mine bought two but can't go, so she's selling them for $98 for the pair.
