How these slipped by the art director over at (aherm -cough-) Wind-Up Records is totally baffling, especially considered how deeply cultivated the aesthetic sensibilities are over there. Well, that's Active Rock for you..

The thing that always struck me about the cover for Unmasked is that the band even concedes to the slings and arrows of the haters by putting a guy on the cover (final frame) ACTUALLY SAYING "I STILL SAY THEY STINK!"

In the case of the album, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy (though I don't mind "Is that You?")

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 15 April 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

would you include music from the elder in this category?

oh yeah, another obvious one:

I think the David Live cover is pretty fuckin' cool. Will anyone back me up on this? The way he's stickin' his ass out (which is weird 'cuz he doesn't have an ass at this point) and he's looking all soulful (except he's really just jacked out of his mind, and his cheekbones stick and his eyes look hollow like a skull, and SKELETONS are totally fuckin' rad. Haven't you ever seen a movie or read a book? Don't you know who always wins in the end? It's death! And he looks like that! Not like Terri Schiavo death, but the cool kind that you get tattoos of.

Come on, y'all're just saying the cover sucks because David said that and you want to be like him.

Heidy- Ho, Friday, 15 April 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I find the image on the left (David up close at the mic) to be really rather disturbing.

I think the David Live cover is pretty fuckin' cool. Will anyone back me up on this?

Yes, I agree. I don't know the album but that's a very cool cover. It's really evocative of a certain icy, blank 70s/80s style -- like David is an airbrushed Nagel painting come to life and sent back through time to replace Marlena Dietrich in a pre-war Berlin cabaret. Or maybe he's trying to be some kind of creepy strip club MC and these are shots from his audition for Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

Heidy- Ho OTM. I love both the album and the cover. Admittedly all of the pictures are creepy, and each in a unique and surprising way, but part of the greatness of Bowie how much panache he had when he fell apart. In fashion and in performance.

Fa Fa fa FA, Fa fa Fa fa FA Fa (poop), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Oops. Walter OTM as well.

He just looks positively undead in those shots.

rockaction (rockaction), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

not to get crude or homophobic, but on the david live cover it looks like someone has put a really sharp stick up bowie's ass.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

That Dylan one's chosen based on reputation alone. (Never heard it.) And my sister owned that Helix album, the only reason I ever heard it.

I can see maybe not liking MIA's music, but if you don't like that cover, there's something wrong with you.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 15 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

but if you don't like that cover, there's something wrong with you.

There must be something wrong with me, as I think that cover's an eyesore.

I'm glad I could help you learn this new information about yourself.

Not to take a position, but why? Because we don't have a lot of Che Gua-qaeda artwork in pop?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 15 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

the MIA cover is kinda garish. but i don't think that it's awful.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 15 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

That MIA cover is just too goddamn busy. It could be good if they took it down a notch.

darin (darin), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

is the m.i.a. album even out yet?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

The MIA cover reminds me of Living Colour for some reason....the Vivid cover in particular.

I haven't heard the M.I.A album (though I'd wager it's not my cup of tea), but I just think the cover is a garish mess. Good call on the Vivid resemblence, though (a great album with a hit cover).

Heard M.I.A. talk about a facet of a refugee upbringing, adoptinga heavy sri lankan accent to impersonate her mother saying, "You want a dress, you make it yourself!" --> "you want a song, you make it yourself"-->you want an album cover you make it yourself.
