Was The New Record By a mini-LP or an EP or what? Cause yeah, I'm with Jim on "Lovelee Sweet Darlene" (and "Another Rainy Saturday," maybe even more so). "Honey Power" = serious favorite.

nabiscothingy (nory), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Anything not on Loveless or Isn't Anything will do.

I DESIRE...MACARONI NECKLACES AND SOAP SCULPTURES (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Slow
Moon Song
Sunny Sundae Smile
Thorn
Emptiness Inside or Paint a Rainbow (I can't decide)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

The You Made Me Realize EP thing...what was it about a cigarette, something like that? Whatever those b-sides were called.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I thought about picking that entire EP and leaving it at that.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

it's been a long, long time since i've listened to any of the Creation EPs, Tremelo in particular. i think i should dig them out for a larf

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

mbv are one of my favorite bands, but i've never heard anything not on the albums. i almost bought glider the other day-- but i'm still waiting for the perpetually forthcoming CD that's supposed to have all of them.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

easier to assume that it will never materialise

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

SLOW! SLOW!!!1

and Sunny Sundae Smile.
and Honey Power.
and Cigarette in Your Bed.
and more?

I've been listening to Glider and Tremolo all week. Oddly enough, though, as much as I love this band, I've never been a big fan of Isn't Anything.

Fa Fa fa FA, Fa fa Fa fa FA Fa (poop), Friday, 15 April 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

OFF YOUR FACE. amazingggggggg.

rockaction (rockaction), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Swallow is possibly my fave MBV song. I just love the guitar chords and the tune over all.

hull hole (hull hole), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll just echo Jim's list. The early EPs were great!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

Drive It All Over Me ffs!! that bassline, those gaps.

zappi (joni), Friday, 15 April 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah you're right there.

Eerily, I also concur mostly with ESOJ. Except I'd be lying if I didn't leave the final place for "You Made Me Realise".

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 15 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

You Made Me Realise
Drive It All Over Me
Cigarette In Your Bed
Feed Me With Your Kids
Slow

NickB (NickB), Friday, 15 April 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Growing up in Southampton, I actually thought the lyric of Drive It all Over Me went:
"You could come down the Joiner's [Arms]. We're so happy here." so that has to go in. I was a moron. Too many other silly teenage associations with MBV to mention here. (Ah...)

You Made Me Realise
Slow
Cigarette in Your Bed
Emptiness Inside
Soon (Weatherall Remix)

Feed Me With Your Kiss is on Isn't Anything so doesn't count.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 15 April 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Feed Me With Your Kiss is on Isn't Anything so doesn't count.

Jesus, you're right! That's what happens if you don't listen to something for 17 years. My memories are rotting!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 15 April 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Slow
She Loves You No Less
You've Got Nothing
You Made Me Realize
Strawberry Wine

latebloomer: strawman knockdowner (latebloomer), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Slow, honeypower, off your face, you made me realise...

leigh (leigh), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

"You Made Me Realise"
"Slow"
The instrumental passage at the end of "To Here Knows When" on the Tremolo EP. Got a flute on it or something. Starts at 4:43.
"Map Ref 41N 93W"
"Off Your Face"

Honorable mention:

"Emptiness Inside"
"2" (Is this Kevin Shields solo or MBV?)
"Honey Power"

Still have not heard:

"Instrumental A"
"Instrumental B"
"Sugar" in a form other than a low-bitrate mp3
"We Have All The Time In The World"

box.of.rox (formerly mnra), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

whats the cover of map ref. on?

piscesboy, Friday, 15 April 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

That's on a Wire tribute comp.
Honey Power
Off Your Face
Drive it all Over Me
Cigarette in Your Bed
Never Say Goodbye

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

My interview with Kevin around the time that tribute album came out.

As for favorite non-album track, all of them. Yay! It was very nice to hear "Slow" and "Honey Power" live, I have to say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

1. drive it all over me
2. thorn
3. you made me realise
4. off your face
5. map reference...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and ...
"weee have allll ..... the timmmmeee...... "

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Cool, Ned. I especially enjoyed Kevin Shields' highly technical explanation of his guitar method: "It just goes 'Beeeeooooowww.'" Heehee!

piscesboy, you need that "Map Ref" cover stat. Easy to find on s*sk (I'm "cpl5938").

"2" is credited to Kevin Shields rather than My Bloody Valentine on the La La La Human Steps site, so substitute "Emptiness Inside" for that in my POV.

box.of.rox, Friday, 15 April 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Feed Me With Your Kids

-- NickB, April 15th, 2005 6:15 AM. (later)

Awesome typo.
Anyhow, I completely forgot about a couple of tunes, so I'm revising my list:

Slow
Moon Song or Don't Ask Why (can't decide)
Sunny Sundae Smile
Thorn
We Have All the Time in the World

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I was thinking of "Off Your Face," not "Honey Power!" Yes, yes, "Off Your Face" is incredible.

nabiscothingy (nory), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

The instrumental passage at the end of "To Here Knows When" on the Tremolo EP. Got a flute on it or something. Starts at 4:43.

I love that! I nicked it for use in a little interlude on a mix I made.

The "Map Ref." cover is also great. I'm not that familiar with the names of non-album songs, so I'll have to POV later when I can look. "Swallow" is a definite though.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

honey power
slow
sugar
swallow
i need no trust

6335, Friday, 15 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

"You Made Me Realize" and the "Map Ref" cover.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

"You Made Me Realise" and the "Map Ref" cover.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I hate when that happens.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 April 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Swallow
Honey Power
Map Ref N41W93
Slow
Cigarette In Your Bed
Off Your Face

I don't even know the titles for some of my favorites.. which one - I think from the "You Made Me Realise" era - has the huge chorus with the girl doing "ooh-oh-ooh" backing vocals and Kevin singing "come back come back come back" among other things??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 15 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

johnny, it's 'i believe'

6335, Friday, 15 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Drive It All Over Me RUUUUUULELLLLEZ

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 16 April 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

I forgot about Map Ref bloody hell. That one too.

So does anyone like the tracks with their old singer on them, the Cramps-eqsue stuff like "Moonlite"?

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 16 April 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

haven't heard this stuff in ages but I feel that the track that spencer put up on one of the MBV threads a few weeks ago ought to be mentioned.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 16 April 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

What is this Map Ref track, and have I never heard of it?

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Saturday, 16 April 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

You Made Me Realise is probably my favourite MBV track full stop. then Honey Power, Slow, Don't Ask Why, Swallow

Lee F# (fsharp), Saturday, 16 April 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

o does anyone like the tracks with their old singer on them, the Cramps-eqsue stuff like "Moonlite"?

yes. i don't like the debut LP but the "geek" ep is tops!!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

kyra schnauber to thread, although that might not be her name any longer.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

What is this Map Ref track, and have I never heard of it?

a) A cover of "Map Ref. 41 N 93 W" from Wire's 154, made for the Wire tribute comp Whore (mark grout has a pic of it upthread).

b) I don't know, have you?

It's really really good, fantastically good even, though it's not really worth the trouble of tracking down a physical copy of Whore. Soulseek has you covered.

Telephonething, Monday, 18 April 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

"kyra schnauber to thread, although that might not be her name any longer." - !!

Is Kyra on ILM? She mailed me some MBV live bootlegs on cassette in 1993 when I used to post on Prodigy music bulletin boards. Haven't heard that name in a loooong time.

Also, does anyone know of any remotely findable comps or soundtracks with MBV's cover of "We Have All the Time in the World?" I really love that track & used to have it on an Island comp that came glued to an issue of Q magazine, but the CD was stolen a few years ago along with the rest of my MBV rarities ($#$%!!).

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

it was originally from a CD called "peace together", that used to be as easy and cheap as the bastards to get hold of, don't know if that's still the case.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

(i don't have it, but then i don't like the song)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit OK I just listened to "I Believe". Goddamn thats some good shit. I would like to have heard it recorded during the Loveless sessions - but still have the vocals up in the mix like it is..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 18 April 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

The lack of love on here for I Need No Trust surprises and disappoints me.

Venga (Venga), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

"Instrumental B" should be leading off all these POV lists and not only isn't but has yet to be cited (by someone who has heard it). that makes me sad. so very sad.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I Need No Trust is great. Maybe perhaps if we PO'd X.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

echoinggrove, you wouldn't happen to have "Instrumental B" on s*sk, would you?

I love threads where the exact same conversation happens twice, as does here re "Map Ref."

box.of.rox, Monday, 18 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

and have I never heard of it?

b) I don't know, have you?

Doh!

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

rox, i can rip it (it's on the Pensioners on Ecstasy CD) and e- you when it's up.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! Thanks! E- me at svp at ipHouse dot com.

box.of.rox, Monday, 18 April 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I used to love 'Off Your Face' but it's possible I haven't listened to it in 10 years.

3-way tie: Map Ref / Cigarette in Your Bed / Emptiness Inside

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

This POV is tough, but the 'You Made Me Realise' EP is tough to beat.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Also, the snare fills on "Emptiness Inside" are mind-bending.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I love the part in the chorus of "Off Your Face" where they sing "crybaby shame" and then go into those harmonies that sort of criss-cross each other. Thats so pretty and catchy. I can't believe thats not on an album. That song could have probably been a huge hit.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

I really love the "Glider" track too. Its been 15 years and I don't think anyone has come close to the brilliance of what Kevin Shields can do with the guitar. "Glider" isn't really one of their best songs, per se, but it is most defintely one of Kevin's most amazing guitar/production moments.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

So Strawberry Wine is non-canon, even with Butcher on it? Spotify and the official website start in 1988.

the plant based god (bendy), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 17:00 (four years ago)

yeah, i don't get it. i've had this on cd for some years and always considered it to be "the starting point" — because of the lineup, y'know?

i like that material. it's like what if sonic youth was more jangly. certainly not lifechanging, but pretty fun.
