David Banner likes Napoleon Dynamite, and other EW revelations...

April 22, '05: Entertainment Weekly interviews David Banner on his favorite recent films:

"I've watched Napoleon Dynamite 43 times. I hated it when I first saw it. All the characters had to act very down, reserved; but in the end it worked perfectly."

"I only liked the first Matrix. It describes the life that most Americans live. There are all these things going on behind the scenes that we don't want to look at. If you watch the news outside of the US, you realize how savage it is."

"The Incredibles was a cartoon, but it really dealt with grown-up issues and being an exceptional person and how you have to downplay it."

"Critics like the second volume of Kill Bill better than the first one because they say it had more story. If I wanted to see a story, I'd watch 'On Golden Pond'. I want to see a fine-ass woman with a sword kick ass."

Apparently, he also likes Bjork, 3 Doors Down and Yellowcard.
The new albums due out July 19th and guests Lil' Jon, Talib Kweli, Luda and some Atlanta metal band called Grout.

This seals it. Banner needs to be disappeared.

kill bill 2 was much better but Yellowcard?!?!?

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 16 April 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

The most disturbing image for me is imagining Banner watching ''On Golden Pond'. With a big box of Aloe Medicated Puffs, a pint of Haagen Dazs and his 'Huggin' Bear."
brrrr...

May I also say that EW is pretty much my favorite magazine when it comes to new music these days? Blender ain't bad, but it's much more costly.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 16 April 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Entertainment Weekly? New Music? Why?

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Mostly because it's CURRENT. New music info gets out so fast that only the weeklies stand half a chance of telling me something I don't know. YES it's so flimsy that it lasts only a one-way subway ride, but they generally get there ahead of most other mags. Case in point (or not, let's not turn this into a "we were talking about this LAST YEAR") Big+Rich and Gretchen are on this week's cover, a fairly bold move for a national media mag.
besides which, their tastes are generally well informed and the writing is reasonably good.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

EW actually has a pretty knowledgable music crew. I've always felt that EW compromised of aging ex-hipsters who have to cater to the soccer mom crowd. That's a compliment as I can't recall another magazine that will reference Pere Ubu in a Mariah Carey review.

Just imagining Banner saying 'Huggin' bear' sends me into peals of laughter.

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Banner reprise the Samuel L. Jackson role in an Incredibles sequel

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 16 April 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

This is fantastic news (Doesn't yancy write for them sometimes?)

Just don't get him mad.

I hate myself.

In the new video for "Ain't Got Nothing", Banner is wearing a 'Vote for Pedro' shirt.
I hated Napoleon Dynamite personally, but I love Banner for doing that. How ungangsta can you get?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

maybe that's why he does it? to piss you off? how the fuck would "being true to gangsta, the most bpring fucking shtick on the planet" be better than "making a point of being ungangsta"? haven't seen the video, haven' t heard the song, but the whole idea sounds like a brillaint fuck-you-to-retards move to me.

xhuxk, Friday, 10 June 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

I like On Gold Pond. Is there something wrong with me then?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

I like On "Golden" Pond. Is there something wrong with me then?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "on golden pond" is a good flick, actually. and so is "napolen dynamite*
this makes banner (who i have always liked) seem MORE interesting, MORE complicated, not less.

xhuxk, Friday, 10 June 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Was David Banner the one with the master's degree in education or something cool like that? I remember noting it on my blog or something. Good for him for not playing into the tired gangsta trope and being like "I like a lot of different shit...and what?"

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

David Banner's thesis "SUCK A DICK DIE MUTHAFUCKA BITCH ASS MUTHAFUCKA" is actually available as a PDF on his website. Needless to say it is revelatory.

I have high hopes for the new record.

Chuck, is this supposed to be directed at me?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Rappers who sound angry =/ gangsta rappers, guys.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

how come it's never news when "white" people like "black" stuff?

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I largely agree with Banner's film criticism.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

43 times is possibly psychotic though huh

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I really liked Napoleon Dynamite the first time. I'm only up to seeing it twice though.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Somehow, upthread, I stopped reading this before the "I love Banner" part. Sorry,Forksclovetofu - that was very dumb and/or drunk of me.

xhuxk, Friday, 10 June 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

i love banner, new album is going to be amazing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Chuck: It's cool; the rampant misspelling suggested the possibility of the demon liquor being involved.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Napoleon Dynamite rules - Banner is so-so.

Complex Magazine Interview: August/September '05:

What are you trying to achieve with Certified?

"I'm gonna be honest and frank with you. People know me from having very insightful, heartfelt records. But Certified ain't nothin' but a whole bunch of muthafuckin' shit. Because I came to the realization that if I don't make hit records, nobody is gonna wanna listen to my message, no matter how good it is. This album is to certify me in the game. And if it does, then I got two albums after this to do whatever I wanna do."

http://imdb.com/title/tt0462200/ - Black Snake Moan

Samuel L. Jackson coming back from Snakes on a Plane (I LOVED IT!@) to make another movie with Snakes in the title staring Christina Ricci, David Banner & Justin Timberlake! looks really good too.
