What did David Bowie draw on his carpet that was so bad? It must have been pretty horrible, for him to discourage his visitor from even looking at it. If you have any idea what david Bowie drew, please post a picture of it here.

pentagram / magic circle (for real, this is what he was talking about)

David Bowie and the Occult

Key Quote: "Anyone who has the CD version of 'Station to Station' finds Bowie's photo on the back cover where he's sitting on the floor drawing this so-called Tree of Life with the 10 Sefirots. "Don't look at the carpet / I drew something awful on it", he sang in 'Breaking Glass' in 1977. Some years later, in March 2001 he admitted that this lyric "refers to both the cabbalistic drawings of the tree of life and the conjuring of spirits."

Banal but true. I'll go and do an MS Paint of a spunking willy now.

i think alba was right.

He's still into all that stuff, too.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Wow! I swear I wrote my post before I read the first two. Must be psychic Bowie-energy contaminating the thread.

What I wonder is why he used the word "awful". Would a Christian say, "don't look at the wall, there's an awful picture of Jesus on it"?

They were clearly very bad drugs.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I guess at least partly he's playing the dabbler or shocked ex-Christian, so he's appalled by his own messing with "dark forces". Or wants the person he's addressing to be appalled, or thinks they will be.

Then there's the "worthy of/inspiring awe" meaning of the word.

xpost

Ooh look, another spunking cock.

In 1976 Bowie kept his urine, hair and fingernail clippings in the fridge of Michael Lipmans home where he was living. The reason was so they could not fall into the hands of those he thought wished to put spells on him.

Makes the guy look like quite a big, stupid, crazy, greedy asshole.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I read that as Maureen Lipman, which really would have been awful.

i can't take this thread seriously. i'm too busy laughing at alba's cock.

[insert joke of your choice here]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

He drew a pentagram -- an inverted, five pointed star, I always assumed.

i was wondering where alba had got to, and then he comes back with... with, that

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 16 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I always thought the lyric was "I did something awful" or "I'm doing something awful" (not sure which...have to listen again) and that there was an actual human turd sitting on the carpet.

I am disappointed to learn the real lyric is less direct.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 16 April 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Until a couple of years ago, I thought it was "I threw something awful on it."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Like, maybe tomato juice.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

i love the tories and want them to win and kick out all the scroungers

hobart paving (hobart paving), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but there's a huge swathe of white English born and bred wastes of carbon that should be deported before we worry about shifty foreigners.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I always just thought it was a wonderful, random line for a song. Suggestive, y'see. Why spell everything out?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Ned I fully agree, but spelling everything out is ILM's raison d'etre, surely?

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I will now analyze you completely in 35 compact mini-essays.
