As voted by British public. Sorry to spoil anybodies enjoyment but:

1. ok comp
2. joshua tree
3.nevermind
4. thriller
5. dark side of the moon
6. definately maybe
7. sgt.pepper
8. like a prayer-madonna
9. appetite for destruction
10. revolver.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

nah the beatles will be number one sgt pepper and jacko backlash. also i reckon the stone roses will be top, morning glory will trump definetely maybe and remember there were only 10 albums that one could choose from on the voting page.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen Sgt Pepper above Revolver in a poll for a while. Hurrah!

Like A Prayer is a bit of a surprise.

Oh right, it's 'industry experts' not the public.

My flatmate said the trailer for this had Ozzy Osbourne picking The Queen Is Dead. Was she making this up?

x-post - oh righ, this isn't the actual top 10?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm clearly not awake yet. It's a public vote on an industry expert selected shortlist. I see.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Not really it cuts very quickly form ozzy to er johnny marr saying "the queen is dead". (only Smiths album you could vote for, I'm not sure I actually saw any Sabbath on the list)

And it's a 150 albums to choose from not 10, that would be a bit silly.

And the stone roses will be top 10 not top. I wish I could write.

I don't think Pere Ubu and Vitalic will make the cut.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

No, I did understand that the shortlist was not 10 records long. I'm not that asleep.

It's a shame about my flatmate getting it wrong.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Whoever wrote the blurbs to the shortlisted albums is an entertaining moron.

http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/G/greatest/albums/1-25.html

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

REM - Automatic for the People (1992)
The one with the metal star on the front.

I think I likes that one best.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I dont think the Stone Roses will be in the top 10, I've never seen a top 10 list with that album in.. apart from in the Observer music list, which holds them in dangerously high regard..

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

when channel 4 did it about 6 years ago it came 2nd also in reader picked Q magazine lists it always comes top 10. I equate channel 4 and Q to have similar audiences.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

If the Stone Roses are Top 10, I will put my fucking television through the window. (Though I hope to be getting drunk somewhere and not watching this thing).

Also, the only Smiths album you should vote for is Strangeways. Duh.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

But THAT IS NOT ALLOWED!

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Death to the Imperialist Music Industry Dogs Who Crush the Will of the Proletariat!

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

the top ten i posted is the ACTUAL top ten for the programme tonight.

no idea about the other 90

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

when i saw the ad for this a month back i assumed stone roses were a shoo-in for #1

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

The album contains Strange Fruit (perhaps the first protest song)

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

where did you get that list from?
anyway

94. Blondie - Parallel Lines
93. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions...

exciting stuff aye?

It's like the World Cup you know who's probably gonna be near the top it's just the arrangement that counts.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Nick Drake having a top 40 single was found worthy of a mention on the Channel 4 news? No wonder everyone hates the left.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

"Graceland" at 84? Any excuse to show video clips of Chevy Chase.

Here's Mani to discuss Love.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Did Alexis Petridis used to have that face? He looks like a particularly unnerved supply teacher.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh Jarvis, hurry up and make a record.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

It's TV's Lauren Laverne!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh Lauren, hurry up and... do something.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Pop fact: so far this programme has featured not one but *two* former members of the Belle & Sebasian mailing list Sinister as talking heads.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm going out now, but I'm worried I'll miss Rod Begbie.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Who was the other that wasn't Petridish? (I haven't been watching)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

i'm guessing it wasn't slash out of G'n'R.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

buckethead was totally on that mailing list though.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

closer at #34? jesus christ, there are not 33 albums better than closer.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

i don't think there's even one album better than closer.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Are you crying out for a new "Never Mind The Bollocks"? I know I am.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

London Calling should have been hellalot higher

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Beaten by Rio? The world has, officially, gone mad. "That's proper singing". Piss off.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Off The Wall *sooo* much better than Thriller imho.

and where the love for Orbital??

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Like Orbital would make it onto a list compiled by Industry Experts.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK the job of an A&R seems to consist of thinking "hey! this band's just like currently successful Band A, except without the songs. I bet they'll have tons of hits!"

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Im just about to kill my television. Someone help me bury it under the patio okay?

NickB (NickB), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

fuck this im switching over to watch Keano Reeves

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

"jazz woodbines". suggs, you knob.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Keanu Reeves! OMG! I cant believe Ive been missing that!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

"Are You Experienced" is literally a trip! Brilliant!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

That's bullshit. I tried swallowing AYE once and had to be resuscitated by paramedics.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

"It's [Are You Experienced?] literally a trip!". Piss off x 100.

xpost x 2, oh well

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Urban Hymns? Urban f***ing Hymns? They couldn't even find anyone to be nice about it!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

18. The Verve "Urban Hymns". Jesus H. Christ. At least they spent about eight seconds on it.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Typically Tropical's "Woah, I'm Going To Barbados". Now that's literally a trip.

Unless you live in Barbados.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Tony Wright from Terrorvision! Talking about music! In 2005!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

#16- how can anyone argue with the placing of this album?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I CANNOT ARGUE AT ALL IN ANY WAY AT ALL!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Tony Wright's the cutest fuckwit in the world, tho.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Especially with Mark Owen selling to me. He's so cheeky!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Now this is an album! Though having "you can sing it, can't you" by Mary Anne Hobbs is not, perhaps, the best endorsement.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I love Appetite for Destruction, but no way is it one of the ten best albums ever made.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

i always wondered where the lyrics to 'Night Train' came from. powerful stuff.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

"Sweet Child of Mine" is the worst song on AFD. I'm happy Slash appears to agree.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Now this is an album! Though having "you can sing it, can't you" by Mary Anne Hobbs is not, perhaps, the best endorsement.

Or Tim Wheeler, for that matter.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

It were just brilliant!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that annoyed me. A multitude of talking heads, and they found two that said EXACTLY THE SAME THING. And it wasn't even a good thing.

(The best thing, apparently, about Like A Prayer is that it's Madonna's midriff, saying "I'm not just a pair of tits")

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

(on the cover, that is)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

"Madonnamania" with Ian Wright last night contained more insight than Douglas Thompson.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

After Like A Prayer, the rest of the Top 10 aren't even their respective artistes' best albums.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

i wish Brian Wilson would stop sucking the Beatles' cocks so much and slag them off once in a while.

"i heard St Pepper and i thought - fucking chancers, this is nowhere near as good as Pet Sounds. ha ha!"

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I never expected Geoff of "Pete &" fame to look like that, to be honest. He looks like Harry Knowles.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm fairly sure Brian doesn't really remember hearing Sgt Pepper for the first time.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

"Sweet Child of Mine" is the worst song on AFD. I'm happy Slash appears to agree.

You child.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Noel Gallagher's schtick is really really fookin' irritating.

(and yes, I know that that was true in 1995, but hey, people apparently still go for it, so it's worth reiterating)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Joe Queenan- Music Critic.

Since when?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

and yes, I know that that was true in 1995, but hey, people apparently still go for it

Do Not Invoke The C-Man!!!

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I forgot to put "fookin'" in some sort of tag so you would know I wasn't adopting his schtick. (xpost, or that either)

Dark Side of the Moon is the best album in the Top 10, I think.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, they're exploring the whole Wizard of Oz theory.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Where "exploring" = "mentioning", as this is a Channel 4 talking head programme, where Craig David qualifies as an "expert".

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Norris!! we hardly knew ye.

Revolver is probably the only album in the top ten that would come near my top ten.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Why do I get the feeling "Nevermind" is going to have the most horrendous analysis on this show?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

"People from Cleethorpes shouldn't have any talent!" (slight paraphrasing, but not much)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

And Tim Wheeler doesn't disappoint.

And they've dragged out that fucking kid again to say exactly the same things he said on "I Love 1991" four years ago.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

FAME AND SUCCESS KILLED KURT COBAIN WHICH WAS SOMETHING HE NEVER WANTED.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

TIM WHEELER FEELS KURT COBAIN'S PAIN.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

And there's the NME cover.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Yikes. that baby off Nevermind is OLD! I feel REALLY OLD! (this is better than proper musical analysis)

Mary Ann Hobbes "it's like Kurt drowning with all the pressures of chasing money" or something like that. Er, shut up?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

course it was, the drama queen.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i really, really like the joshua tree.

[ducks]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

none of the top three is the best album of the band in question. plain silliness.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Conor Deasy looks like a cross between a serial rapist and a Lego figurine.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Paul Weller is wearing the same jumper I was almost surgically attached to when I was eight. Bear in mind I was eight. And a girl.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

top 5 people in the Thrills who should just fuck off. i know my number one.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

the VH1 "top 100 icons" or whatever the fuck it was called had Kelly Osbourne and DMC talking about Kurt Cobain.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Kelly Osbourne and DMC > Conor Deasy and Tim Wheeler.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, I've just realised who Sean Rowley is: he's the smirking prick behind "Guilty Pleasures".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

DMC earnestly discussing Kurt Cobain's sincerity was pretty entertaining, I'll admit

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

who's a smirking prick dom?

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Slash in way too proud of ".. total Radiohead head" non-joke SHOCKA!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

FOUR HOURS WE'ILL NEVER GET BACK

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

mind, as i'm sure she's about to point out when i tell her this: if i hadn't broken the other aerial, we'd be able to use the other telly.

you people have computers near your televisions or something

no, just really, really long arms.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I've just noticed that The Libertines are in that list and laughed my cock off. Can I sue Channel 4?

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Nick, who was on this program from Sinister? Northy?

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

David Merryweather (DavidM), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)
