Recent UK and Europe Pop

Okay, so sorta leading out of that pop thread, a friend of mine was recently asking for a compilation of recent non-R&B pop & R&B from Europe/UK (which almost never gets released here any more). I'm planning on including the following tracks:

Annie - Chewing Gum, My Heartbeat, Me Plus One
Girls Aloud - The Show, Love Machine, Wake Me Up
Sugababes - Caught In A Moment, Someone In My Bed, Whatever Makes You Happy (he's heard most of the singles)
Rachel Stevens - Sweet Dreams My LA Ex, Some Girls, Negotiate With Love
Whigfield - Was A Time
Lene - It's Your Duty, Here We Go
Mania - Looking For A Place, Money In My Pocket
V - Hip To Hip
Phixx - Wild Boys
Will Young - Leave Right Now, Your Game

What other crucial pop hits am I missing? I should note that he's not really into rocky stuff eg. no Busted really (otherwise I'd probably include "Dakota" ha ha)

Jem - They

I had no idea Whigfield were still going.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

(was still going?)

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Jem's "They" actually looks set to be quite big here possibly, so it probably won't be necessary (she's done a song with Xenomania though, i think, so...). It's weird isn't it - post-trip hop with 2-step beats!

Alba you would love "Was A Time", it's sad, glammy and vaguely Celtic schaffel-pop! Up there with "Hot Love" and "Durch Die Nacht (Wasserman Mix)" in the winsomely sweet stakes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

I shall investigate!

How about Natasha Bedingfield's 'These Words'?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Huge over here so not necessary - but yeah otherwise it would definitely be on there.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

There's always Hystereo (from Denmark)

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I missed the yousendit :-(

Will have to download this next time I'm at my parent's place.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

would they like comical Danish dancehall? if so i'll send Bikstok Rogsystem's 'Cigar'. if not i'll send it anyway.

i think Bertine Zetlitz and Teddybears STHLM are big in their own countries if not anyone else's (so 'Fake Your Beauty' and 'Cobrastyle' might be worth including, although the latter are a bit rocky).

Here's Hystereo's 'Stor Dreng' again:

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if they'll have to change their name soon

$V£N! (blueski), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I think they might have been around longer than the Dublin lot, so maybe not.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I suppose, in Oz, you count Kylie Minogue as an Oz act in spite of her music being largely written and produced by Brits.

-> if ever you're in desperate need to prove a belgian pop idol loser could make it. :-)

Maybe the Emma Bunton singles from 2003-2004? And Fierce Girl's "What Makes A Girl Fierce".

Shane (Shane), Sunday, 17 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

And if you can stomach even more Xenomania, Abs "7 Ways" and Alexis Strum's "Nothing Good About This Goodbye" are two particularly good, but not often mentioned songs.

Shane (Shane), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

If you like Annie and Bertine Zetlitz, check out Töyen Airport. Their music is for free at http://www11.nrk.no/urort/user/?id=4580

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

definitely Emma Bunton. It's really hard to pick just a few from her album but 'I'll Be There', 'No Sign Of Life', 'Crickets Sing For Anamaria' and 'Maybe' are all excellent.

Re: Girls Aloud - 'Graffiti My Soul' as well?

Javine - Best Of My Love
Alcazar - This Is The World We Live In
Verbalicious - Don't Play Nice
Amy Winehouse - Fuck Me Pumps (original and Mylo mix), Amy Amy Amy, Stronger Than Me
Blue - Bubblin'
Kasia Klich - Lepszy Model (a couple of years old but so so good: imagine Polish sophisto-pop take on Lina)

I suppose The 411 and Jamelia would be too R&B here.

Are foreign-language tracks OK? I have a few that would be worth adding to this if that's not a barrier:

Some may have been mentioned or are already known:

Bodies Without Organs - 16 Tonnes of Hardware (specifically, the remix that's a bonus track on the album)
Christian Forss - Unforgettable (Ewing and Raposa liked this, even!)
Cortez vs X-Ray feat. Lemon Juice - What U Get Is What U C
Da Buzz - Dangerous
Elize - Automatic
Bomfunk MCs - Hypnotic (MUCH better than their famous-outside-Europe hits)
Natalia - I've Only Begun To Fight
Hitch Hike - Travel Girl (A more psychedelic Xenomania-esque thing)
Loto - Back To Discos (possibly my favourite single of the decade)
Marly - You Never Know
Kate Ryan - Libertine
Novaspace - So Lonely
Paps'n'Skar - Mirage (La Luna)
Bertine Zetlitz - Ah-Ah (Sounds like "Buffalo Stance"! Yes!)
September - September All Over
Tess - The Second You Sleep (TRANCE cover of snoozy indie rock choon)
Universal Poplab - Bedhead (The 00s Pet Shop Boys! Almost.)

I recommend Nadiya's "Si loin de vous":

http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0Y3583EQSH3P50UXWW71R0WWWO

ace French discofied R&B-not-R&B!

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

bump.

and now for some fake French pop! well, In-Grid sings in French but her producers are Italian. she hit big few years ago with "Tu Es Foutu", one of those curious cases of pan-european dance smashes that didn't cross over to the UK (or did it?). anyway, "Je Ne Crois Pas" is a track from her '03 debut album, and it's a classy, wonderful piece of mediterranean pop house.

Tim, if you haven't made the compilation yet, i suggest you consider this - it would sit nicely next to "Was a Time".

everyone else - get that Nadiya track too! trust me, it's a stormer.

Mind Taker, Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I think the Sugababes song to go for off Three is "In The Middle". Kim Lian's "Teenage Superstar" is worth a go too.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

"teenage superstar" is fantastic.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm all about Darin right now

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

"In The Middle" was a minor hit here so Tim's friend probably knows it.

Tim, if you drop me an email with your address, I'd be happy to send you a CD-R full of this kind of thang.

Anneli Drecker (From Norway)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

possibly a dumb question but i need guidance! i'm after a cannier way of keeping up to date on current pop music. i don't listen to the radio *that* much, but it's usually kiss fm during the day when im cooking, this is the kind of stuff i'm looking for. what websites or ilx threads track what is big & decent in the charts?

i know the radio 1 top40 site has links to clips of each track but that seems like a chore and i can't be doing with having to wade through mush like one direction. mostly interested in the club-friendly hard-hitting stuff, guetta, minaj, pitbull, redone, tinie tempah, etc but also the more pop stuff like maroon5, fun., etc.

i'd be super grateful for any pointers!

NI, Sunday, 17 June 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

oh ianpaws, maroon 5? how you have changed mr stooge!

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 17 June 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

it's a weird one. initially balked at that jagger track but i've been djing this big mainstream club in town for a few months now and playing that song out and seeing everyone whoop for joy has kinda burned into my head as a 'this is a good' pavlovian thingy y'know? i've become a real torchbearer for populism lately, fierce defender of shaz and baz's right to have a fucking good time.

don't worry though, i've been listenin to naught but steely dan and dorothy moore this past week. balanced.

anyway stop making me justify myself! can you recommend a site/thread?

NI, Sunday, 17 June 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

I'm surprised there's no ilm thread that covers it tbh.
I want a time machine to go back 12 years and show you future-ian. I wonder what you would say.

only site i've heard of, is the one the lex hates, popjustice. Would that cover what you're after?

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 17 June 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

no, PJ isn't really 'towny' enough if you know what i mean. it has a really idealised take on pop that doesn't really reflect what's out there, and certainly not the tastes of my beloved shaz & baz.

NI, Sunday, 17 June 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

can't really think of many sites like that! mostly it's either mp3 blogs/facebook pages that post endless streams of new stuff regardless of whether it eventually charts, or Popjustice-type locales with tunnel vision... of blogs i follow, this one by a US gay club DJ is i guess the closest thing i can think of:

http://mosuniverse.com/blogs/taj/

tho you'd probably be better off just hitting up random big hits on youtube and checking out the most viewed stuff from the suggestions sidebar

Mind Taker, Sunday, 17 June 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i think i might have to bite the bullet and start checking out the uk top40 page. the music news/reviews page on digitalspy gives a fair idea of who's big out there at the moment. just weird because some songs that are big in the clubs or on radio don't do so well in the charts. complicated process to keep tabs on all this
