AKA: "Bands that have been in Steve Albini's kitchen."

That's a mighty fine list of bands, if you asked me. Is it too much to ask for this show to have an alt.country-esque effect on the UK music full-court press?

David Raposa, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, that IS too much to ask. Just a little parity in the coverage, though - is that so hard?

David Raposa, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going, mainly 'cos of Burma and also 'cause I had a fine old time last year (when the line-up was much more to my taste.) But the SY ATP is the one I'd really like to go to - Dead C, Boredoms, Derek Bailey etc. etc.

Andrew L, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

to be honest, there is only The Lonesome Organist there that particularly interests me. i wouldn't mind seeing Low again, a couple of the other bands look alright, but apart from L.Organist theres none that i really want to see (hope he does a london date too)

gareth, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, but wtf is up with cheap trick?

goeff, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can we have an all-in extreme fighting style meetup at ATP of people from IL*, Jeepster, Sinister, etc.?

DV, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, but wtf is up with cheap trick?

Chicagocentrism, I guess. They're still loved like chocolate here. (There are loads of Chicago connections w/bands and labels in this lineup, unsurprisingly.)

scott p., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will now sulk for 5 minutes because Nina Nastasia is playing the UK before giving the US the once-over. However, I heard she's releasing an album on Touch & Go (SHOCK!), so hopefully this lack of touring will change.

Find ye _Dogs_. It be a fine record of pretty songwriterly stuff. Aye.

David Raposa, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so no one is on for a fight? lightweights. You know Sinister will whup your pinky asses.

DV, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where'd you get yr copy of Dogs, David? I imagine you picked it up a while ago? I've heard many good things but haven't been able to find myself a copy.

Andy K, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woah -- Flour is playing? Why not Savage Beliefs, Toothpaste, or Mehnt Mensch?

Andy K, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I told myself I would never do that.

Andy K, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You MEEESERABLE failure!

Cheap Trick tickles my heart (and Albini produced an album and covered them in Big Black days, so hey). I really want to know what the hell they think of the rest of the weekend, they'll probably wonder if they're the only T. Rex fans in the place.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Upper Crust? That's a big surprise. I wonder how they'll go over? I'm sure Cheap Trick will love them.

I wish the UCLA ATP was half as good. Oh well, at least we've got ALL of Television, not just Tom Verlaine.

Arthur, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to see how they'll parse the bands - I'm sure there's a link on the site somewhere. Interesting that they list Clint Conley (MoB bassist) SEPARATE from MoB. Not that I'm trying to get at anything; it's just ... interesting. (And the Ex Orkest - oh, I'm dyin' over hea.)

Andy, I found a copy while spelunking the cozy confines of Other Music Cambridge. Insound, I know for damn sure, has nada. Perhaps Aquarius (or even one of those shady corporate CD retaliers) can hook you up.

The paucity of information available on the 'web for Ms. Nastasia (& Socialist Records, the label on which _Dogs_ is housed; her own label, I imagine) disappoints me.

David Raposa, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, there's something to be said about a festival that will feature Mission of Burma, Wire, and The Fall all in one swoop. I can easily vouch for the goodness of the Danielson Famile, Oxes, and Melt Banana live. If they can get The Ex on that bill, that good very well cement my ticket purchase and plane tickets.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Welcome to Chicago, Brits! Now you, too, can experience Dianogah.

Nitsuh, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian invades Europe! Lock up your vegetarian restaurants.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never been to any of the ATP's...and by the looks of things I won't bother with this one either. Cue Gareth to say "That's only cos the Strokes aren't playing!" - look, I beat you to it!

DG, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

diagonah are well boring, as is this list, for me anyway. i echo gareths sentiments, although i'd like to see the rachels. but those two alone are noit worth 100 quid. the besat thing about ATP is that these bands come over and normally plan a tour anyway to justify coming all the way over here, so you get to see what you want, but for a fraction of the price. every year that goes by, and the boring it gets (maybe for me that means more 'indie'), the more i regret missing the tortoise curated one. that must have been crazy./ i mean, i cant see aphex wanting to plpay at this one.

ambrose, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going. Lonesome Organist is the only one I'm really really interested in. I've seen Oxes (nice guys, great shows over here, never gonna work on a stage that size), Melt Banana, The Fall (and they were utter shite the last time), Rachels and pretty much every other band I would otherwise want to watch... It'd be kinda good to see Low again, as when I saw them last I only knew a couple of songs...

But to be honest, I'm glad. Glad because I'll miss all the bands anyway due to overfrolicking and overdrinking, and if I don't care then there's no need to worry. Huzzah.

emil.y, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd go if a lot of my friends were going but I've no overwhelming interest in seeing any of these people play live.

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is sort of a side question, but what is up with the "Shellac of North America"? Is Albini being cutesy, or did they have to change their name in the UK the way Suede have to call themselves The London Suede in the US?

Nicole, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dosnt have shed 7 in it, therefore list crap.

albini is mock rock. wd rather be wanking off in knitting factory with toshinori douglas and dave zorn and david s braxton but aint got good enough chops so resentful and takes it out on rock.

XStatic Peace, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've seen copies of the Dogs album kicking around on the shelf here in Toronto from time to time. Maybe I should go grab it.

As far as I know Shellac has long referred to themselves as Shellac of North America in the liner notes of their albums....yup, right inside the cover of At Action Park. I guess it's particularly appropriate in this case.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to like Dianogah, and their bass-happy bopping sorta reminds me of Rothko (were they a "rock" band); live, though, they were a bit blah (the one time I saw them, opening for Silkworm, who were equally blah, and surprisingly so).

Brian, you HAVE the Ex! The Ex Orkest! That's the Ex with STRINGS and HORNS and EXTRA DRUMMERS! Pick up their album! (Here's a review.) Features songs from Dizzy Spells & Scrabbling at the Lock. Mighty fine.

Buy me a ticket, would you, dollface?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mission of Burma AND Clint Conley's new band (whose name escapes me as I escape my certain fate) are both playing on the second weekend.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To go back to the original question, though - why would these bands deserve more coverage in the UK music press, and how would it improve the UK music press - or scene - if they got it?

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Honestly, it wouldn't - I was just being mule-headed up there. (Old "indie" habits take a while to fade away, you see.) It would be nice, though, for some of these groups to find some love in the fishwrap.

I hope you weren't expecting an actual answer, Tom.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they deserve more coverage in the uk music press because the uk music press should cover bands making records. one of the manin reasons i gradually stopped buying the music press in the 90s was that records would come out, and they wouldn't even be covered in the press (i don't mean just reviews, but even info, i'd see a record in a shop somewhere and i'd be like "hey i didn't know they had a new record out", i kinda hoped the music press would tell me about such things)

would it improve the press? yes, i would think so. broad coverage and all that

re: Clint Conley on ATP UK bill.

Clint's new band is called consonant. The other players include Chris Brokaw (Come, Pullman, Steve Wynn, Empty House Collective, Pay The Man), Winston Braman (Fuzzy, Come), Matt Kadane (The New Year, Bedhead)

actually, I think all 3 of these guys are also toiling (if that's the right word) as Evan Dando's current ensemble. In spite of this, they're awfully good. The songs are not inconsistent with Clint's Mission Of Burma material with as much lyrical & musical invention as you'd expect. In general, its more of a melodic animal, though they are hardly lightweight.

I think some of the lyrics are co-authored by Holly Anderson, who shares writing credits with Clint on some of Mission Of Burma songs (eg. "Mica").

there is a consonant album engineered last autumn by Bob Weston, forthcoming from Fenway Recordings (http:// www.fenwayrecordings.com).
