School me on the subject of the no-input mixing board

I really enjoy the work of Toshimaru Nakamura and other NIMB "players," but... what the fuck is it? How does it make the sounds that get looped and manipulated if there aren't any inputs? Do you whack it on the side like a static-y television? Splain this "instrument" to me!

mixer feedback. ins to outs.

and i'm pretty sure he uses a sampler/delay too.

Yeah, I used to do it with my 4-track. Just run the headphones out through your effects chain and then back into a mic input.

And before I ever heard of whatshisface, mind you!

six months pass...
I only know a little about it as I just really started experimenting with it yesturday, but its pretty interessting, I believe the science is similar to thaat of guitar feedback in that it is static that creats a circuit of noise more or less, save with a mixer it tends to be a bit more harsh. With a guitar the vibrations of inaudible waves make thee strings vibrate at a certain harmonic pitch, some many octaves above that, but essentially the same note... I believe it is similar in the sense that it creats a circle of noise where the output reaches a creshendo which can be manipulated by different effects... With a mixer I believe the volume is more of what swells then the pitch and the volume with guitar feedback. Essentially the electricity flowing through the mixer creats noise, when you send that noise from the output back into another input it builds on top of itself... In order to hear it you must have another output which is recieving noise from wwhateever input you choose to send the output through. Knowing how that works now, it becomes a bit easier to use this "instrument," then just knowing that it works. Another interesting side note is that if I am not mistaken, audible disease makes a pedal called the rupture which, I think uses this concept. It is an effects loop, but I believe it works less conventionaly then the average effects loop. It takes your input signal, and sends it to a faux output, where you can put some other effects in a loop, and then it sends the signal back into the loop, I believe it then recycles part of the signal to the input and sends the other half out, but when the signal builds it creats the same effect as the no signal input mixing boards. It runs only $60, but you could probobly build one for less, even if you buy all the components at radio shack.
