Two Questions About The Avalanches

1) A friend of mine heard a track by them that he thought might be a bootleg or a B-side. The only think he could tell me is that it contained an obvious sample of "Bring The Noise" and mixed it w/ a bunch of other sounds. Does this sound familar to anybody? If so, can you name the source?

2) Has anybody seen their live show? I've read that they try and replicate the records actually playing instruments, which seems noble. Does it come off?

Thanks for any help re Question #1.

Haven't seen them live, but the word from friends who have has ranged from 'revelation' to 'two guys standing there being very boring.' Hm.

I thought the live show was good - a bit like being round at a friend's house as they play you 30 seconds of their favourite records. Bonus points for playing Welcome to the Jungle, some minus points for stopping most tunes half way through. Also, when I saw them in London there was an ace DJ afterwards playing ILM freindly hip hop - Jay-Z, Missy, Ludacris, N.E.R.D., etc...

there are 3 mixes u can download from yr. chosen napster-replacer, any one of which contains all manner of samples and weird cut-up stuff -hip hop/80's pop/balearic stuff/smiths tunes/funk/etc etc, and the most famous one's called 'gimix' (a promo cd of it is available but it's hen's teeth rare, it was given away at gigs and stuff, downloading it's easy enough)

this was played on radio 1's breezeblock early last year. one guy ( dexta from the avalanches) is a world-famous DMC champ-runner up dj, really does take the p*ss with his fabulous eclectic, anti-snobbery mixing skills. when he and the avalanches dj'd at the social in london last year (march) they did a very good job indeed of taking the actual roof off the place. people were dancing on tables and going ab-so-luely bonkers, but i haven't seen them live.

when they do *play* live as opposed to dj, some of them play instruments apparantly while the 2 or 3 others dj. sounds good anyway.

there's a site somewhere with all the tracklistings of all their mixes but i can't remember where, go to google, and search for 'avalanches mix tracklist' or whatever. there's all sorts of remixes knocking around too on mp3's.

apologies if you know all this already!!

Mark, don't know about the song you mention, but the live show I'd describe as "sporadically brilliant but patchy". At the one I went to they were frequently trying to be punk-hop hybrid, which is what they actually were prior to Since I Left You and for which they still have a lot of faithful fans over here, so maybe it was just for us. When they were playing stuff from the record, it was often amazing, with the band taking live stewardship of bass, guitar, drums and keyboards and just leaving one or two to set off samples, while at the same time bringing old jazz players on stage or simply jumping round and being maniacs. To be honest I enjoyed the moments where they looked remotely concentrated on what they were doing - their enthusiasm was infectious but it was neither quite the music nor the crowd for dancing along, sadly.

So far, so good; the problem was that their constant short- attention spans meant a lot of timewasting instrument swapping and sudden disappearances, abruptly finished songs and overall something of a short evening (after an hour of ukelele playing from the support act!).

A third question about the Avalanches.

Am I the only one who thinks the production on Since I Left You is very iffy and at times it descends into static ridden noise?

I like the album, don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's irritating. Perhaps this is the attraction for some of you I don't know.

Ronan, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan--from what I gather (interviews & such), they deliberately made it all mid-rangey--no extreme highs or lows--maybe to replicate listening to vinyl or to add a sense of melancholy. I think it works, but I can understand yr frustrations.

M. Matos, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes ronan!!!! the album is very sloppy at times! kinda hurts my ears!!

chippy, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that means you have it on too loud. that's not what I was talking about at all.

Ronan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

avalanches thats so 2001. old hat. everyone sez album now crap.

XStatic Peace, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ronan, yes! i think they've gone for an 'old time radio' type effect, i like that approach, but i never really got into the avalanches album

gareth, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah it works in parts but theres a few moments where you think "this DOES need polishing", and I will listen later and note which ones (how anal and bored I am today).

Ronan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

im talking about the production as being sloppy. and it hurts my ears TONALY not LITERALLY. so yes that was what you were talking about. bastard.

chaki, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Chaki, I thought you were being sarcastic and condescending. Er and so I responded in kind. Honestly, sorry.

Ronan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh. no i was serious. i was listening to the album just the other day and twords the end of the song 'since i left you' i said outloud to my friend "this is just sloppy." and the bastard thing was just a joke.

chaki, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
That album is laser guided - not sloppy *at all*! When will they return??? Oh Avalanches, why hast thou forsaken me!!! (sorry, I couldn't work out the plural/tense stuff there).

They'll be their own nostalgia act at this rate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

M.I.A. blew up within months of her first single though, the Avalanches had four years of great shows and records under their belts before their hype-ball swelled up
