is there any melody that the thought of Pharrell singing won't inspire nausea?

ergh, that inspires naseau more than most i think.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell said in an interview last year that most of the time he sings the choruses he writes for songs as a scratch vocal with the intention of someone else singing it on the final version, but a lot of the time the artist ends up just using his take. this makes me a little less mad at him for all the annoying hooks he's done.

Kelis with Pharrell - "Baby It's Cold Outside"

Just a matter of time till they do a Neptunes Xmas album and then you'll all be sorry.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 April 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Remember when Pharrell, Sting, Vince Gill and Dave Matthews covered "I Saw Here Standing There" on the 2004 Grammys? Pharrell played drums and was the only one who didn't sing, which was too bad because the others couldn't hit the high notes and "WOOOO"'s in the chorus to save their lives.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 April 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Like Pharrell could hit the high notes! Dude has the worst falsetto in show business; when you sing, it should sound like mouse being slowly crushed by a steamroller.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

should NOT

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

He could hit them better than Sting, Vince Gill and Dave Matthews did.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 April 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

There's no way Pharrell could sing a high note better than Vince Gill because Pharrell can't sing his way out of a paper bag. He's really, really sorry, like maybe subpar high school talent show singer at best.

You know the train wreck singers at the beginning of each season of American Idol? That's exactly where Pharrell would be without his pitch correction studio wizardry.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't hate Pharrell!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Something tells me you're not a Curtis Mayfield fan.

billstevejim, Monday, 18 April 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

He has definitely done some vocal hooks that got under my skin but I do love "Lets Get Blown" and I actually liked "Change Clothes" quite a bit too. He's done a few that were aiiight..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 18 April 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

On the other hand "you know those stupidly boring singers yr mostly left w/after a few rounds of American Idol? That's where Pharrell'd be w/out his etc".

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 18 April 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell sounds NOTHING like Curtis Mayfield. Curtis Mayfield (and to a much greater degree Phillip Bailey) can sing; Pharrell cannot.

One of the greatest MTV moments I can think of in recent years is Pharrell and Chester from Linkin Park presenting together at the VMAs; Pharrell decided to flex by croaking out the hook to "Beautiful" and then Chester stepped in and wiped the fucking stage with him. When someone else pwns you on your own song the year it comes out without even trying, you should maybe take away from that the thought that vocals aren't your strong suit...?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

(PS: I like "Beautiful" but had Chester sung that hook instead of Pharrell it would have been even better.)

Released last June

It was originally released back in June last year, tucked away as track four on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack album, released by the Back Lot Music label. Pharrell had signed to Sony Music and the track was considered a ‘possible’ to appear on his new album, which is due out later this year but has no official release date yet. Then dance and urban station Capital Xtra (formerly Choice FM) started playing it. Pluggers, as is the norm in radio promotion, had not been knocking on its door. They just decided they liked it and put it on heavy rotation.

“They were hammering the track for a number of months in isolation,” says Neil Hughes, the director of promotions at RCA, the division of Sony Music that Pharrell is signed to in the UK. This coincided with the DVD release of Despicable Me 2 and the launch of the 24HoursOfHappy.com site that featured, as its name suggests, a 24-hour long video for the song featuring cameos from Jamie Foxx, Steve Carell and others. RCA hadn’t even decided what the lead track from the album would be but quickly swung into action, and it was released as a single by the label.

“A good label adapts and reads situations,” says Hughes, talking of the response on radio and of how it has started to sell as a standalone download track in its own right – detached from the film soundtrack. “It was becoming very apparent that this track was very much loved. By the time we had formulated a conventional single plan and took the track to radio fully, it was already top 75 on iTunes. It was an amazing week

i love Saadiq but comparing "Happy" to him off of The Way I See It is goofy

Waluigi Weingarten (some dude), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 00:18 (twelve years ago)

Big Issue article is really interesting and love that they interviewed a psychologist to talk about why it's like "Hey Ya!" (only with that song I thought I liked it until I realized I didn't, whereas with this song I didn't like it until I realized I did)

Eric H., Wednesday, 19 February 2014 01:00 (twelve years ago)

Of course, the main reason I maybe didn't like it last summer was because I actually saw Despicable Me 2.

Eric H., Wednesday, 19 February 2014 01:14 (twelve years ago)

I can't past this dude's mosquito timbre. I can't stand his voice.

I don't get DJP & Alfred's hatred for his voice. It may not be the best but there are a zillion worse ones

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 19 February 2014 05:12 (twelve years ago)

Eva Braun and Alicia Keys had worse sure

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 12:01 (twelve years ago)

Bruno's is tougher to take, though it is technically better.

Happy is Pharrell? Thanks to the movie my kids are into it. I thought it was just this year's psuedo-soul "Fuck You." If Pharrell had true genius foresight he would have squeezed his way onto the "Frozen" soundtrack, maybe by way of voicing a character or something.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 February 2014 12:49 (twelve years ago)

I like his voice fine, it's got character and enthusiasm.

pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Thursday, 20 February 2014 02:17 (twelve years ago)

Saadiq is obviously a much more technically adept singer but "Happy" would be a way worse song with him singing it. It totally relies on Pharrell's pipsqueak Curtis Mayfield impression (which he hadn't really busted out in a long time -- certainly neither of his big hits last summer used it. I didn't realize how much I missed it). Modern Saadiq's earnest professionalism would have sapped the character out of the song and made it sound rote. Tonyies-era Saadiq would be a different story entirely.
