I text-messaged Mr. Jones a couple of weeks ago. No response:(

Will(iam), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

haha, I missed that April Fool's article on SOHH. I've been tempted to call the number a few times, but I don't know what I'd say if he picked up.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

the houstonsoreal blogger he talks about has been getting Dizzee Rascal into the studio with Houston rappers.

Slim Thug and MIA are both on Interscope that's a collab I want to hear

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

it seems weird to me that Mike Jones gets to drop a major label album before Paul or Cham or Slim Thug. plus his verse is my least favorite on "Still Tippin'".

Al (sitcom), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I like this more than the Slim Thug leak, although Serg said at SXSW that Slim said the album was gonna be different. I don't think I could rank the verses on "Still Tippin," all three are so great, and where are you without "Turn your neck and yo dame's missin."

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I can rank easy! Paul > Slim > Jones. I'm sure Slim has to change up his album for release, that leak is so old now. hopefully he'll come with a better single than "Like A Boss" or "I Ain't Heard Of That" that will allow him to set a real release date.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 18 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

I was talking to Slim's PR gal recently and she informed me that his answering machine runs like so:
Tinny robot operator voice: "Hello. You have reached---"
Slim: "DA BAWSSS"
Tinny robot operator voice: "Please leave your name and number after the tone."

A Visitor's Guide to the Houston Sound
By KELEFA SANNEH

BIG MOE: This outspoken syrup devotee is one of the most engaging members of the Screwed Up Click. His 2002 album "Purple World" (Wreckshop/Priority) is an entertaining introduction to his woozy mix of rapping and crooning.
Audio: 'Still da Barre Baby,' by Big Moe (From the album 'Purple World' ©2002 Wreckshop)

DEVIN THE DUDE: A brilliant oddball with a spaced-out flow. Hear it on last year's "To Tha X-Treme" (Rap-A-Lot), which includes a track based on a Brer Rabbit story.
Audio: 'To the Extreme,' by Devin the Dude (From the album 'To the Extreme' ©2005 Rap-a-Lot)

DJ SCREW: Huge selection at www.screweduprecords.com. Novices might begin with the impeccably sequenced "Endonesia" or "Leanin on a Switch," a freestyler's delight.

GETO BOYS: The group's leader, Scarface, remains one of hip-hop's best storytellers, as he proved on his most recent solo album, "The Fix" (Def Jam South). And in January the Geto Boys, who put Houston on the map in the 1980's, returned with a strong reunion album, "The Foundation," on the long-running label Rap-A-Lot, which has played a crucial role in the scene's evolution.

LIL' FLIP: Last year, Houston's best-selling star released a shaggy but lovable double album, "U Gotta Feel Me" (Columbia). His new mixtape is "Kings of the South" (Clover Geez, find it at www.mixunit.com), a collaboration with the tough-talking raconteur Z-Ro, whose new album, "Let the Truth Be Told" (Rap-A-Lot), is due out next month.
Audio: 'Sunshine,' by Lil' Flip (Featuring Lea) (From the album 'U Gotta Feel Me' ©2004 Sony Music Entertainment)

PAUL WALL & CHAMILLIONAIRE: This witty, biracial duo released one of the best recent Houston hip-hop albums, "Get Ya Mind Correct" (Paid in Full). They've since parted ways, but both have major-label debuts due this summer.

SLIM THUG: Originally with Swisha House, he's now signed to Interscope, part of the Neptunes' Star Trak camp. Visit bosshoggoutlawz.com to buy the swaggering mixtapes with which he made his name, as well as "Welcome to Tha Hood," by his fierce protégé, Killa Kyleon.
Audio: 'Still Tippin',' by Chamillionaire, Mike Jones and Slim Thug (From the album 'The Day After Hell Broke Loose' ©2005 Rap-a-Lot/Asylum)

SWISHA HOUSE: This ambitious label, now hooked up with Warner Brothers, is known for its mixtapes. One of the best is "The Day Hell Broke Loose 2" (swishahouse.com), a dud-free compilation.

UGK: The duo's 1996 masterpiece, "Ridin' Dirty" (Jive), is full of tough, intricate, impossibly smooth rhymes. And last month Rap-A-Lot released "Sweet James Jones Stories," a surprisingly consistent collection of rhymes from Pimp C, the group's incarcerated half.
Audio: 'Ridin' Dirty,' by UGK (From the album 'Ridin' Dirty' ©1996 Jive)

OTHER MIXTAPES: Bun B contributes tongue-twisting rhymes to "Southern Smoke 17: The Texas Mixtape Massacre" (www.djsmallz.com). And Rapid Ric's new CD, "Whut It Dew 2" (find it at www.thescrewshop.com), includes "Country Boy," a bluesy collaboration between Paul Wall and Killa Kyleon. And don't miss "Drama" (also at www.thescrewshop.com). the spectacularly cantankerous new mixtape from the eager antihero Trae.

a couple of months late on the bandwagon.

bin rush, Monday, 18 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Dude, it's the fuckin' GRAY LADY. Cut him some slack.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Dude, lady's a she.

Also, yeah, if the NEW YORK TIMES is getting on your nuts, then the bandwagon's probably already full, & it's time to trade it in.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

how old is devin the dude? he looks like he's in his 50s in that picture!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

My point was that the NYT tends to come MAD late to music innovation; faulting a Times article for "jumping on the bandwagon" is similar to the whining about Arcade Fire on NPR; I just thank god that the audience for the respective august media is open to hearing about this shit in the first place.
And Devin's gotta be in his mid to late thirties by now. He's got that hard livin', right?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Tofu is on the soy sauce.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

think KS' jump off point is that screw style is just now getting mainstream attention, BET play etc. True this, as after I read the article I turned on BET and sure nuff, there was Mike Jones doing his kinda weak take on it all.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

(How is Mike Jones weak exactly?)

Also, yeah, if the NEW YORK TIMES is getting on your nuts, then the bandwagon's probably already full, & it's time to trade it in.

I'm not sure i understand what this means. Who are you directing this at, the artists? Listeners? Critics?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Mike Jones has one of the weakest diss tracks I've ever heard on Slim Thug's Dirty Money mixtape. He's charismatic and funny, but one-note (and by the sound of it can't write and/or freestyle to save his life). I haven't heard any of his older mixtapes (Swisha House disease - 40 solo mixtapes by the same guy with many of the same tracks), so I'll hold off on calling him (or his flow) weak until I hear the official album.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

riddle me this........ WHO MIKE JONES?

Amon (eman), Monday, 18 April 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't he the singer in Jesus Jones?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 18 April 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

uh, kelefa's a dude. and he's a fan as well as a critic - i wouldn't blame him for being "late on the bandwagon," or whatever. it's not like the dailies have a habit of indulging their critics' every interest; they're conservative by nature.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

YEAH BUT WHO MIKE JONES? HUH?

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

He's Keyzer Sozhe.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

so this album drops today right?

Tinny robot operator voice: "Hello. You have reached---"
Slim: "DA BAWSSS"

hahahahaha

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

bought the album, the first track is OK but I'm not expecting big things from the rest. I wonder if his major label is going to let Swishahouse do an official screwed & chopped version?

Anyone know where I can download or watch the Still Tippin' video?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 22 April 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

most of the copies I've seen in stores this week are the limited edition double disc with the screwed & chopped version on disc 2.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 22 April 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

milo, you can see the video here. there's even a video for the chopped & screwed version! unfortunately the website makes you sit through a long-ass flash intro commercial for some mix album.

Amon (eman), Friday, 22 April 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah I like the fact that after "Still Tippin'" finally crossed over from BET Uncut to daytime airplay Uncut started playing the S&C video.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 22 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I didn't think to look for a deluxe edition.

Thanks, Amon.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 22 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

the second disc fuckin rulz. Been listening to it ALL DAY

haven't checked out the 'official' disc and probably won't

post your sizzurp recipes here!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 22 April 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

I love Big Moe choruses. I also feel sometimes like one of the few people who actually likes mike jones as an MC.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

(How is Mike Jones weak exactly?)

I can't pass a branch of Thornton's without nipping in and buying one of those nougat things.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

hahahahaha

Amon (eman), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, yeah, if the NEW YORK TIMES is getting on your nuts, then the bandwagon's probably already full, & it's time to trade it in.

"I'm not sure i understand what this means. Who are you directing this at, the artists? Listeners? Critics?"

I THINK what I was getting at was that if the Times deems you worthy of coverage, then the "trend/fad" isn't a "trend/fad" so much as it is an actual THING that needs to stop being looked at as a "trend/fad" that smaller publications can talk about to gain cache w/ folks that give a shit. (I might have it twisted, though.) (& the "trade it in" comment = "you're gonna need more room") ("& a DVD player")

Of course, didn't the Times publish that glossary of fake grunge slang ten years ago? If that's true, then pretend that didn't happen.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

They did publish it. Not one of their finer moments, the cobb-knobblers.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

"a couple of months late on the bandwagon."

more like a decade!

scg, Friday, 22 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

i haven't got much to say about mike jones. he's more in the suc/botany boys tradition than alot of other recent houston mcs, slow, simple, repetitive punchlines and those beautiful round, 3D voices. plus unlike alot of other houston mcs, mike jones seems pretty real.

dk's recent govt names post about dyke jones is spot on.

scg, Friday, 22 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, its a good post, one of my favorite songs on the album too (I just like big moe in general). I like Mike Jones' as a persona, a hungry, on the grind, serious yet funny, using his shortcomings to his advantage, that strained, rough-textured, melodically raw and blunted voice, he's very much an interesting character. And it comes across in his songs.

deej., Friday, 22 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

'serious yet funny' = he does a good straight face when he's being funny, sorry.

deej., Friday, 22 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

i think about that slim thug answering machine post every few hours or so and am able to live life again.

i think part of the secret about screwing and chopping is that you have to keep with both, go back and forth. after listening to the screwed and chopped disc last night i put on the regular one this morning and 'still tippin' was, like, jittery. i'm sure if i play it another 20 times i'll start feeling the driftiness (which is delicate) again.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

the album version of "Got It Sewed Up" is kind of crap compared to the old one w/ Slim Thug(g)(a)(can he pick one? I've seen it spelled three ways).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

except that Slim Thug isn't on the old version, I don't know what I was thinking of there.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
DA BAWSSSSSSSS
