circlesquare "pre-earthquake anthem"

didn't care much for this output release when it came out, although i did love an earlier ep they had released.

however, just recently put this album on again, and it sounds a lot better to my ears now. especially the track "7 minutes" which is really something special.

anyone else heard this?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 18 April 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I know the tracks from Channel 1 (kind of dull) and the single from Pre-Earthquake, or at least the one with the freaky video (the one with the herky-jerky "this is rhythm" chorus, "Non-Revival Alarm" I think), which is much better. How's the rest of the album?

Telephonething, Monday, 18 April 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Circlesquare always struck me as a "could have been" band. There's a lot of great elements on that record, but they never seem to sonically come together properly.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 18 April 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

I really like that album- an atmospheric minor classic. The heavy bass lines and the deadpan vocal delivery give it a very druggy feel, and it's steeped in a sense of dread. It didn't get the props that it deserved or tha similar albums got, for example "Again" by Colder.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

The 13 minute version of "Non Revival Alarm" (NRA MIx) is one of my top tunes of the decade. Absolutely magnificent.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

jed, where is this mix?

i definitely agree that it is a "could have been" affair, but after listening to it a lot lately, i'm thinking it is truly an underrated record, a minor classic as neil says...

march21's website hasn't been updated since "pre-earthquake anthem" came out, so there's no indication that he is working on anything currently, which is a shame.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

cutty, is that a real email addy? i can send it.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

ok that's silly. message me at hotmail and i'll send it on.

i'll answer my own goddamn question:

circlesquare "fight sounds" EP

why do these thread keep on getting deleted??? (mcutt), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

and did anyone ever hear the patrick wolf remix of cs's "7 minutes"?!

why do these thread keep on getting deleted??? (mcutt), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

the lack of circlesquare love baffles me

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 28 May 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

they're extremely underrated! even on discogs "Pre-Earthquake Anthem" gets 3.5/5, which is actually quite fair but not in the context of discogs where any old crap gets 4.9/5.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 29 May 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

I like Fight Sounds, cutty, and the Patrick Wolf mix ... since you seem to be championing this a bit, any advice on how I should re-approach Pre-Earthquake Anthem?

If this was meant to be a pun, it was a good one.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 17 December 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

cutty, Monday, 17 December 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Friends:

Though still not quite the final version, Circlesquare's "Untitled (For Christmas)" has been mastered this year and is avaliable as a secret gift here:

http://www.circlesquare.ca/gift/

We've also come into some rare stock of 'Pre-Earthquake Anthem' (2003) and 'Fight Sounds' (2005) that's been completely unavailable since the untimely demise of Output Recordings last year...

three months pass...

apparently there is a new album without a label entitled "songs about drugs and dancing"

why isn't this guy huge?

cutty, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

sorry it's "songs about dancing and drugs"

cutty, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

I never bought this and should have!! Skater-Goth??

mmmm, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

both the ep and the album (ie his complete discog to date other than remixes here and there) are still realtively easy to pick up i think.

mark e, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

i forgot about this band (guy?). 7 minutes was the jam.

LaMonte, Thursday, 7 August 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

there are two ep's--"the distance after" and "fight sounds"

cutty, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

ahh. off a hunting i must go ..

[ta cutty - didn't know etc etc]

mark e, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

for cutty.

songs about dancing and drugs

1. hey you guys
2. dancers
3. timely
4. music for satellites
5. ten to one
6. bombs away, away
7. stop taking (so many)
8. all live but the ending

final track is a 13 minute track.

3d cover.

[had me digging around for some old red/green glasses so i could check it properly !]

no big deviation from the circlesquare style.
downbeat, spacious production, layered vocals, twang guitars, heavy bass (nearly destroyed my crappy car stereo speakers this morning)

!k7 records.

mark e, Friday, 24 October 2008 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Nice to see he's landed on one of the bigger, better-distributed indies. Good for him.

!K7 are giving away an mp3 sampler with a track from this album and some other stuff (Hot Chip dj-kicks single, Quiet Village, unmixed track from the Carl Craig comp, something from the new Matthew Herbert, etc) here:

http://www.k7.com/sampler/

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

i have the album. glad it finally found a label. i love it.

cutty, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

"hey you guys," "bombs away, away," and "stop taking (so many)" are the high points for me. but i love the whole thing except for that final track which kind of rubs me the wrong way.

cutty, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

THIS IS IT, THIS IS OURS, HERE WE GO.

cutty, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

mark e is my soulmate btw

cutty, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

not so sure about that cutty. i really like the 13 minute closer.

mark e, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

ha. my only other gripe with the record is that "ten to one" cribs the end vocal melody line from belle & sebastian's "sleep the clock around"

cutty, Thursday, 30 October 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

thankfully i've never heard b&s so i have no such association.

[note : it's such a good headphone album]

mark e, Thursday, 30 October 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

i love this guy, can't wait to hear this

VG but i know what cutty means about the last track. i find the rhythm awkward and annoying somehow.

jed_, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

actually i changed my mind about that track. i've started getting into it.

jed_, Thursday, 22 January 2009 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't changed my mind. i love the whole 13 minutes of it.

great.

jed_, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

and when i say "great" i mean i haven't seen a video this good for years. so pure. amazing. really enhances the song too.

jed_, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

I love the move with his necktie for some reason. Between this, Depeche Mode and the two Fever Ray clips this is looking like a hell of a year for music videos...

jed_, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

nice video

the album is really, really good isn't it? develops his sound in such perfect, subtle ways...and i think the last song might be my favourite thing he's done! apart from 7 Minutes of course.

ilm needs to give him more attention for real.

unaustralian (jabba hands), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

uh guys....this album is amazing

unaustralian (jabba hands), Thursday, 5 March 2009 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

BTW : i'm not so sure if this is common knowledge, but there is an extra track available for the new album.
the track is called "dark matter(s)"
unfortunately, it's still only officially available from itunes (i think).
in the words of the man himself :
"it was originally track #8 after Stop Taking, but I took it off as I thought of all of them, it could easily exist on it's own... and that way it kept the record under an hour! "

mark e, Thursday, 5 March 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

hey mark e, are you the same mark e that did the detroit experiment remixes?

tricky, Thursday, 5 March 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, no i'm not.
that mark e capitalises properly.

mark e, Thursday, 5 March 2009 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

don't worry you'll always be a great mark e to us

Local Garda, Thursday, 5 March 2009 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

xpost

heh. ok. well, those remixes are super good.

anyway, from what i've heard of it, this new circlesquare lp is quite good . the video posted upthread is ace!

tricky, Thursday, 5 March 2009 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

gosh.
some ilm love.
feels rather strange.
and yes, the album is very very good.

mark e, Thursday, 5 March 2009 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

eight months pass...

so, is it too early to dig out the circelsquare crimbo song, untitled (for christmas)
answer : no. it's never too early.
guess this years album didn't quite hit the spot for as many people as i'd hoped it would.
shame.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i thought it was a really ILM-y album! seems to have been totally overlooked :(

mark e, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

oh mark i finally like the last song on SADAD

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

hurray.
hope you got the extra track as well.
if not holla, and i can sort you out.

mark e, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

I was in a local used bookstore with a small music section today and for some reason they had seven(!) sealed copies of Songs About Dancing and Drugs for real cheap. It was weird seeing so many of these mixed in with all your usual small used shop standards. Remembering FACT really liked it, I of course picked up a copy.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

you should look into fight sounds EP and the earlier stuff as well

mark e, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 09:25 (sixteen years ago)

but i love the whole thing except for that final track which kind of rubs me the wrong way.

I very belatedly heard this about a weak ago and I LOVED it.

Tim F, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

Except that on some weird Freudian level obv I think it's weak.

Tim F, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

how do you mean?

the last track reminds me of classic superpitcher stuff, 'the long way' etc.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

also fuck yeah!!!! @ that tumblr

jabba hands, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

Ha jabba I was just making a poor joke about misspelling "week" in my prior post. As I said I thought the track was AMAZING.

Tim F, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

glad you succumbed tim.
its an album that when in a certain mood, ticks all the boxes for me.
