Groups where the singer is not the most well-known/most-focused-on member

I've been trying to think of a group that fits this category, and the only thing I can come up with is Rage Against the Machine (Tom Morello vs. Zach De La Rocha is a close call). Any others?

Journey used to be "Neil Schon and Journey" for a few albums before Steve Perry joined.
Ronnie Montrose, Black Label Society, guitar centered bullshit like that.

King Crimson.

The Jeff Beck Group. Except possibly when Rod Stewart held the singer's job.

Cream.

Santana.

I'd also like to suggest that whoever said Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes is a bit off the mark, seeing as all the members were singers. And Teddy Pendergrass, who was the main singer on the biggest hits, is certainly better known in terms of true celebrity than any of the others, Harold Melvin included.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 18 April 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Depeche Mode and Spandau Ballet (non-singing songwriters who often took the lead in the media) as contentious possibilities, albeit both far less contentious than the Dandy Warhols.

Lee F# (fsharp), Monday, 18 April 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

The Beach Boys (after all, their lead singer, technically speaking, was Mike Love)

Cheap Trick (tho god knws Robin Z is a great rock singer)
Mothers of Invention (didn't they have a succession of nominal lead singers as well as Frank?)
Yes (no?)

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 18 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

no - Jon Anderson's always the first one to spring to mind.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 April 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

I'll take yr word though I was thinking Rick Wakeman (ducks). As a lad I focused on Steve Howe cause of his playing, not star charisma.

Matt Rutherford (junkeye), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Why Bloc Party? I'd say Kele's the most prominent member.

Thunderclap Newman
The KLF (sort of)
Saint Etienne

haha beaten to the Phantom Planet punch (even though Schwartzman left years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Manic Street Preachers. Its all Nicky and Richie.

And Bloc Party focuses the drummer a lot.

dmun, Monday, 18 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Mike and the Mechanics, y'all.

And I would argue that Townshend pretty much = the Who for me.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

the boo radleys (Martin Carr over Sice)
manowar (I know the songwriter is more famous than the singer but their names escape me).

Uh, I don't think there's too many fans of this band around here, but The Fabulous Thunderbirds fit.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I know there are plenty of fans of THIS band around here: RUSH

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Squeeze (Jools Holland)

zeus, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

One would have expected Garbage to be OTM here, but then, their "frontwoman" certainly knew how to grab the attention from her legendary producer drummer anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Santana and Dogstar seem to be the right answers.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

A bit uncertain about Squeeze though. Jools Holland wasn't even in the band at the time of the album that a lot of people consider their finest work, having just been replaced by Paul Carrack.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

A lot of people consider Squeeze's finest work to be Cool for Cats and that's it. Just saying, like.

(though most of these people tend to forget the big jazzy bollocks in the middle of the song)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns

Burr (Burr), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)
