This song is sick. Holy shit.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Uhh. I dunno.

The first minute's vocal melody sounds a _lot_ like Let Me Fix My Weave's. In fact before the chorus it almost sounds like a continuation of that song. I don't think that's a bad thing really, as This IS Not a Test was the superior end of what she started on Under Construction, and was sadly not exalted as much as it should've been for being the apex of her sound thus far (aside from few disparate sources, such as Xgau and..Pfork's Brent D!) as it came too soon after that album.

Aside from those liquid as hell synthy squiggles, nothing really sounds new here. Almost like business as usual, as far as the last 3 years / 2 albums have been. It seems that the Neps are starting to sound more like where Timba was back _then_ rather than going anywhere unprecedented... at least the Pharrell Phalsetto parts don't sound too abominable. (Or maybe this file just hasnt revealed the worst bits yet? ) This just doesn't sound anywhere close to hitting with the force or impact of a "Get Ur Freak On" or "Work It" as the element of surprise isn't there. Of course we can't really fault her for that, as that time is over; that cultural/ sonic moment has come and gone. The problem is, she doesn't seem to be growing or taking her aesthetic in any novel direction, but is just reveling in this thumping beat, and keeping us moving along to it (do we really have a chance w/ that bass?) It'd be cool if perhaps she found some brand new producers, or brought someone we haven't heard before on board.

And after all that's said, I want to emphasize how it's still a solid production number. I really like how this track sounds so sweaty, congested, roiling, ...and underwater-y. It has a tribal element to it, as if we're just casually eavesdropping on some sort of manic jungle night water group-dance thing.

But then, "Pass the Dutch" had already exhausted the tribal-ritual feel, imo. She needs some new ideas, really. And I mean NEW new ones.

Vic in Alderaan (Vic), Monday, 18 April 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

is this a radio rip?

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 18 April 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

To be honest with you, "This is not a test" took a long while to grow on me. When I first heard it, I really disliked it, and thought it no where near as good as "Under Construction", which I thought was fantastic.

I'm a huge fan of Timbaland, I think he's come up with some cracking beats, but Missy has been pimping herself out left right and centre recently, doing a bit of a ludacris and just appearing on everyones songs, I mean come on, what was that rap about in the remake of "Carwash".. something about tuna fish or something? Just stop that.

I didnt even know she had a new album coming out, but I suppose she probabily does, but she has a lot of work to do if she is to better "Under Construction", which was a sublime mix of old school hip hop and her crazy nonsense sounds.. "ding da da ding ding, ding da da ding".. ahem.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell's breathy stuttery parts are pretty annoying.

Need to hear a full, higher quality rip, but at present, I'm not so pumped.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I like This is Not a Test a lot, but I don't think it ranks anywhere near Miss E or Da Real World.

I like this song a lot! Is this the Neptunes? Its all weird and blippy and nuts. Better than her last leadoff single, surely.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm really digging it too. Nice and tuff.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

There are a lot of songs with this sort of old school boom, boom-CLAP beat going on, like that Deep song that goes "WHUT THE FUCK" and various post- "Grinding" tracks like Tipsy and the 112 song.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I've got a CD quality version. I'll have it up in a few.

Yeah on and on is definitely great.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit "Lose Control" is bass music!

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Hahah, this is ridiculously great. "On and On" that is, haven't heard the other yet. Dan where are you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Pharell does not sing.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

"Lose Control" good too. Sci-fi music is really great these days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Ciara raps for a second.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

who produced "Lose Control"?

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I guess Timbo did since they didn't specify.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

"Lose Control" is already starting to stick with me a bit more, enjoyable as "On and On" is...though I suspect a lot of this is down to my preference of Timbaland over the Neptunes in general.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I like Lose Control better, it seems to me the neptunes just added some "futuristic" bloops and bleeps that Missy usually is working with to their usual formula. Is Lose Control Timbo doin a little crunk?

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Lose Control. Wow. The ascending arppegio.

The chorus kinda comes out of nowhere, but I think it will make sense upon repeated listens.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

omg 'Lose Control' is like '1 2 Step' turned inside out, it is AMAZING and made me start dancing with like proper moves and everything before the first verse was over. MUSICMAKEYOULOSECONTROL MUSICMAKEYOULOSECONTROL! And omg the false ending!

'On & On' is great too!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

the "lose control" chorus totally makes the whole thing! but it really doesn't sound like timbo - i'd be more than happy to be wrong, but all his recent output has been so constipated i can't imagine this sudden degree of freedom and space coming from him

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Wow, "Lose Control" samples "Body Work" by Hot Streak, one of my all time favourite songs. someone's got taste.

xenografia, Monday, 18 April 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

"Lose Control" is all about Fatman Scoop for me

Al (sitcom), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Could the The Cookbook end up being better than Da Real World (my personal favorite Missy record)? I think so! I'm quite excited for this record now.

And yeah, Lethal, it is a Timbo production!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

HOLY SHIT! Basement Jaxx Missy!

Hah! I was thinking of that comparison on the way home tonight, but yeah, Mantronix is more accurate.

The fact that it is Timbo makes me smile.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm astonished to hear that's Timbo; old dog, meet new tricks!
Allow me to be the first to point out that On and On is not hip hop, but is, in fact, GRIME.
>ducks

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I called out the Grime-ness first! On my blog ;)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

And Timbo did a track for this MTV commercial a month or two ago... I swear it sounds straight off of Daft Punk's Discovery record. I think they were offering it for download on mtv.com... let me check.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

It's actually just a bunch of ringtones he made specifially for MTV, but the one I'm talking about is called "Block Party" :

http://www.mtv.com/starmtv/ringtones/genres/genre_set.jhtml?genre=feature9

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

the samples for those ringtones are not working for me :(

I'm very happy to hear that this is timbaland!

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

"Get Down!" by Rich Boy is another great Timbaland track that appeared recently (it's on Southern Smoke 17)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe no one has mentioned that Lose Control samples Clear by Cybotron (for some reason that makes me ridiculously happy - hope it becomes a huge hit and makes Juan Atkins rich).

Model 500, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Heard these back-to-backish on the drive home. Ciara rapping = OMG!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

'Loose Control' is what I've been waiting for from Timbaland for a long time, for him to go full on electro instead of just hinting at it or teasing us with it at the end of songs. This track is gonna make rubble outta the dancefloor. There's so much to love: the "MUSIC MAKES YOU LOOSE CONTROL" sample reminiscent of LRD, Missy's tighter rhymes, Ciara sorta rapping, the ad libs by Fat Man Scoop to flesh out the beat so the track doesn't go completely into dance music territory, the obvious sample....I'm lovin it.

the other track is nice too

modernaire, I wanna be, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

It's been established on the other thread that Missy produced "Lose Control" herself, not Timbaland. Has she snatched the pebble from the hand of the master?!

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

"I can't believe no one has mentioned that Lose Control samples Clear by Cybotron"

I really like this Missy track, but "Lose Control" does to "Clear" what "Rapper's Delight" did to "Good Times." I hope it becomes a hit, too.

one time gaffled 'em up, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm certainly not suprised Tim didn't produce 'Lose Control', brilliant as it is - there's none of his stamp about it.

Lose Control

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I read the spizzazz reaction and while i agree with all his criticisms i think it works in spite of them somehow. In fact, its everything Tim F. said he didn't want to see Missy do (except she's not working w/ timbaland, at least) (forgive me if i'm putting words in your mouth tim) but I still like it. Old school lecture or not, total lack of fresh trashiness, it still works. We'll see how it ages for me though.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I dont mean that last sentence to sound like a copout, i really do like it.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

maybe it's seeing "lethal dizzle" all over this thread, but on&on reminds me a lot of lethal b's "rollin wit' da fire"

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 21 April 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

the more I listen to "On & On" the more and more I hope it doesn't get pushed as the single and that I never have to hear it much on the radio. ugh ugh ugh.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 April 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, "On & On" is really attractively ugly in terms of the sonics. (This is meant to be extremely positive.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 April 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

as far as on and on goes, i liked it a lot when i heard it but haven't really listened since.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe it's Pharrell's voice that makes people want to punch him so much when he makes beats like that these days.

I haven't heard it Lethal, what do you mean? (what did I say again?)

Rob Them Co's review is ace (as per), whether it turns out that I agree with it or not.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 April 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm a little drunk now but - basically my reading of yr take on missy was:
stay away from "old school" lecture style
stay away from timbaland
um. Cant elaborate really.

Yeah rob them co's review is what i'm talking about tho, like missy's done everything i was hoping she wouldnt but somehow the end result is that I like the song anywye. Maybe hwen i'm sorber i'll explains better.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

in a way my articulating any cheap faded glamour in other songs could be seen as a cynical old electro-curmudgeon's elaborate strategy for holding them at a crit remove; i can only concur with sfj that everything i might like about 'lose control' i already loved once in 'clear'. (sfj has a mp3 of clear up too btw, although its a cleaner inferior version of what i'm familiar with)

"Lose Control" does to "Clear" what "Rapper's Delight" did to "Good Times."

*shakes fist at screen*

i should add xscape's 'wassup' planet rock rip is also totally calculating, but seems 1000x less so than missy's in comparison. fundamentally its these other tunes that "work in spite... somehow" for me, that transcend that instant familiarity. obv it hardly needs saying trillions of ppl won't have heard 'clear' before, but trying to hear 'lose control' with fresh ears... doesnt make me lose memory's control. its a mess outside of the sample.

(young gunz 'can't stop won't stop' wouldnt stay out of my mind thruout all this btw; it really is a key, key txt in terms of how something brazenly drawing from the oldskool can emerge so gleamingly fresh and confident and unbeholden to its sources - witness its failed counterpart in just blaze's 'friday night' oh look we did this already)

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

I feel you.

xp normally now you've got me all anal about it. That last sentence took longer than usual to correct.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

I still like "No Better Love" more than either of the other Young Gunz songs. The video with them skiing is the best.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I never quite saw where you were coming from re "Friday Night" Prima, but then my exposure to the stuff it was ripping may not have been as extensive as yours.

"stay away from "old school" lecture style
stay away from timbaland
um. Cant elaborate really."

Hmm this wasn't it really dee, or at least I don't remember it as being this. I guess you could say my position on Missy is that I like her making professional R&B and unprofessional hip hop, but on This Is Not A Test she was trying to reverse that distinction.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I was being very rowdy reductive, i was definitely feeling a bit tips last night, but this is the para I should have just copy+pasted in the first place:

Meanwhile Timbaland is getting around like nobody’s business. Which is a healthy sign, I think: right now any time spent away from Missy can only have a positive effect. With each new/newish Timbaland track I hear, my suspicions only go stronger: the man needs to dump this whole pseudo old-skool minimalism schtick. Yeah, it worked a charm on Under Construction, but by This Is Not A Test what had started off perfectly poised along that imaginative/goofy tripwire had fallen headlong into mulchy seriousness. The shift in Missy’s outfits from puffy pink jackets to black leather said it all really: the time for fun was over, and old-skool-the-party-trick was replaced by old-skool-the-really-wearying-by-now-lecture. I can even hear how a track like “I’m Reall Hot” has a good beat, but its oppressive plea (“TAKE ME SERIOUSLY”) just bores me.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

It's weird that you should say that, because my impression of those two albums is exactly the reverse of yours. To me, Under Construction too often veers into the po-faced old-school-lecture mode, whereas This Is Not a Test is the easy-going party album that doesn't take itself too seriously.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 21 April 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't entirely agree with that assessment but definitely see how those albums could be characterised like that: Under Construction wears its old-school focus lightly, it bounces off all these old-school references and signifiers lightly and playfully and never forces the issue. Whereas This Is Not A Test at times does feel forced in its club focus - it hassles you into moving but a lot of the time ('Let It Bump') doesn't keep its own end of the bargain! Though I don't think this happens enough to spoil the album, and the lusher, R&B-inflected cuts like 'Toyz' are the best anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

one thing I am very happy with about the new songs is that Missy is more vocally imposing than she has been for the past couple of years: on This Is Not A Test she buried her voice far too much, and never really let loose. But on 'On & On' she, like, BELLOWS! Which is good to hear.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't being very lucid last night so let me clarify, tim. Essentially, I mostly agree with you w/r/t This is Not a Test (or at least, what you said in that paragraph) and I was sort of dreading Missy's upcoming album, fearing it would follow the strict old schoolmarm lecture-mode hip-hop thing, but then I heard "Lose Control" and - mostly, I'll admit, thanks to fatman scoop and ciara - I love it in spite of what rob them co said (which seemed to be an argument similar to yours - forgive me if i'm conflating them too much).

does that make sense?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to hear "Lose Control" to know.

"It's weird that you should say that, because my impression of those two albums is exactly the reverse of yours. To me, Under Construction too often veers into the po-faced old-school-lecture mode, whereas This Is Not a Test is the easy-going party album that doesn't take itself too seriously."

I should note that the paragraph quoted above relates to Timbaland rather than Missy mainly. The beats on Under Construction are much sillier than the (Timbaland) beats on This Is Not A Test, which seem to be saying "I am a hard, old-skool inspired beat" over and over again ("Let It Bump" probably the worst example of this). That's what I mean by "lecture" in this context.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

you people are nuts, as always

or just incredibly sensitive

bugged out, Friday, 22 April 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

actually PLAY some old school hip hop next to TINAT sometime. I think you'll find there's very little similarity.

and so missy likes to talk about back in the day sometimes. big effin' deal.

bugged out, Friday, 22 April 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

I should note that the paragraph quoted above relates to Timbaland rather than Missy mainly.

This may be at the root of my misunderstanding. I agree about "Let It Bump," regardless.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

So it turns out that on first listen I like both of these tracks heaps! Taking the ramshackle sci-fi minimalism that glinted through the best hip hop tracks on This Is Not A Test and refolding it back into the fun, densely layered sound of Under Construction.

"On & On" reminds me a lot of "Funky Freshed Dressed".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 23 April 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm very glad you like them, actually.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Saturday, 23 April 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

:-) Yeah, had Tim not liked these, I'd be all 'warghlehuh?'

sci-fi minimalism

Absolutely. It's future shock continued and extended, self-conscious and brilliant for that reason.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 23 April 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

'Lose Control' is certainly what 'I'm Really Hot' was ultimately aiming for.

I'd like to go on record as saying that Missy is now the #1 rockstar I want to fuck.

I'm sure that news will make her day.

As I recall, Bowie was quite pleased when he cracked my top ten in '84.
Get it?
CRACKED MY TOP TEN?
HAW!

Not sure if this will work, but I'll try it anyway.

WORKED! Great video, the only concept I could think of after a zillion listens was the inversion of gravity, which I'm happy to see throughout the main video and the bumper.
Is that fuckin' Tommy Lee in the On and On bumper?
God I love Missy.

I got Da Real World a few weeks ago, and that one is quickly becoming my favorite, though I like some things from all of her albums. I think I was a little too hard on Under Construction up thread.

is she referencing the video for "The Test" by The Chemical Bros. at the end in the "On & On" segment? If so, I LOVE her for that.
