Between the Wire article a few issues back, the Rolling Psych/Drone/Freak 2005 Thread and the pfork finnish psych folk article thread, I figure there is enough interest in Avarus, et al. I've been meaning to start this thread for some time to consolidate all the projects and sounds offshooting from Avarus. I have trouble keeping up with this stuff and would love to hear your favorites & things worth searching out, you ilx obsessives, you.

This mp3 release is good and on the very drone-y end of things. Do yourself a favor and check out the freaky artwork for it.

Both their new release, The one on Secret Eye and the 2cd on Tumult, are incredible. The III LP on HP Cycle is also great. Whatever you can find to purchase is probably a safe bet, I'd say. I think Avarus are probably the world's leading improv freak out group, over SBHOTM and Vibracathedral, too, even.

Second to that. Upon first hearing the Tumult release i discovered the band that The Wire's New Wierd America story made me think sunburned would be.

Definitely start with "Jättilaisrotta" on Secret Eye first. then if you like it go for the double cd of early stuff on Tumult, which i didn't like too much at first but it grew on me big time after afew listens. I too like this group way more than their American counterparts (though I hear that Skaters are supposed to be great).

I have yet to hunt down any Kemialliset Ystavat but that will be remedied soon hopefully. their discography is huge: http://www.kemiallisetystavat.com/disco.html

Search Kellari Juniversumi, for sure.
Also, these finnish titles, C/D?
Too many vowels!

I like it everytime I listen to it, but can't remember what it sounded like once I'm done. Finnish mindfuck.

I do like SBHotM (esp. Magnetic Drugs) but I also agree that Avarus is more consistently rewarding. I enjoy the free jazz element and also the Finnish folk element which at time can sound like Hawaiian ukelele music to me. It's generally very spacious and thoughtful improv, no big egos apparent. I am totally unfamiliar with Kemialliset Ystävät (no idea how to pronounce that either).

Avarus is generally more rewarding IMO, but I do recommend checking out Kemialliset Ystävät's "Alkuhärkä."

gonna wait til I’ve digested Ruskeatimantti before weighing in on Avarus. Taken on their own, their many mini-LPs have felt somewhat insubstantial. "AVP," where Avarus make like Circle making like Amon Düül (I) '03, was probably the standout achievement, if not a shatteringly original one. III was also good (despite the goofy artwork), with more of a Jewelled Antler/Pseudoarcana liminal drone feel Haven’t heard Jättilaisrotta yet.

I’ve spent a lot more time with the Anaksimandros' Life is a Skullbow LP and Camels Running Through Life cassette, both of which I’ve liked even better than any of the Avarus i've heard. murky, malevolent ur-rock, like Cro-Magnon with knobblier clubs. Genuinely threatening.

"Oos-teh-vet." there's a thread about it.

I picked up the Avarus two-disk compilation and am enjoying it, but KY's Alkuhärkä throws around a heavier vibe — a little less faerie-dust, a little more cough syrup, more to my liking...

No West Coast tour = I protest.
