the stone temple pilots to the white strokes' nirvana, or not so much?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

*sigh*

sure. why not.

you are the weakest link. goodbye.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

They're more like Candlebox.

Christopher R. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

look out, dudes, JD from CDepot has some razor-sharp game show references up his sleeve.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

i heard a louis xiv song and i thought i t was sexy

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

haha they're like a mainstream Hold Steady (and I might prefer 'em)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Man, you are totally insulting STP with this comparison.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

is that your final answer, Fritz?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

the first time I heard their single on the radio I couldn't figure out who it was and the best guess I could come up with was LCD Soundsystem, although it's better than anything I've heard by LCD Soundsystem. I kinda liked it until I saw the video, at least. dude tries for a Kinks look and ends up resembling Eddie Izzard.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

They're like the Crazy Town of the 00s.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

I like "Finding Out True Love is Blind", not for the misogyny, but because it's a nicely crafted song. I would like to listen to this teacher song, too-it sounds hot.

WillSommer, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

it's a shame they're so hung up on the dominance thing but their Bowie-T. Rex lifts are pretty fucking tight and the lyrics sure don't shortchange on detail. Most dynamic retro-lechers you'll see all year

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

i think i'll have to ask the audience. (x-post)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

I think it's funny how all the people that were heralding all this nu rock for being 'danceable' and 'sexy' are suddenly all mad at this band for having skeevy sexual lyrics.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Every generation aims for its Bon Scott (but perhaps only finds its Al Goldstein).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

can't we talk about king louis quatorze?

carly (carly), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

He dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the Upper Crust should be the logical enemies of this band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

hey teacher is a pretty fucking great, it destroys that new white stripes single on big dumb riff-ology & falsetto disco-osity. plus it's got strings.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

oddly enough I was thinking about starting a TS: Louis XIV vs. Hold Steady thread today after listening to the new HS album but I wanted to spin it a few times before throwing my lot with either group for sure. I'll say that the Louis XIV guy does a lot more with the same amount of pipes as Craig Finn (whose one-note bit may be intentional for all I know).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

they kind of remind me of the vibrators or the monks (the "drugs in my pocket" ones), they're pretty uncool and dirty jokey, kinda sound like older dudes trying to show the kids that they can do this shit with one hand tied behind their backs, and coming off clumsy but fun. if they're the lampshade-on-the-head drunks at the party, i'd rather slurp schlitz with these dorks than guided by voices anyday. i read that they used to be an alt-country band called "CONVOY" before they hit on this scheme, so Louis XIV may bee a pretty calculated - but no more so than lots of bands i love, so i'll cut em some slack. but then again i think the darkness are kind of wicked too, so clearly have no taste anyway.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

who's hold steady, miccio?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't really see the connection between danceability and "skeevy" sexual lyrics. Skeevy's an excellent word, though, and I'm stealing it.
The Louis XIV aesthetic bothers me, anyway. It's like a horned-up 12 year old's idea of what rock is like, in the same vein of the Kings of Leon spread in Rolling Stone a few issues ago, where they're sitting on coaches with beautiful women and Jim Beam.

WillSommer, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

and what's wrong with a horned-up 12 year old's idea of rock? fuck, that's like the dictionary definition of it right there. i loved that KoL spread because it was so fucking over the top. popular rock needs more characters like these guys, imho.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

x-post

ok, now you're just trying to make them sound awesome.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

and what's wrong with a horned-up 12 year old's idea of rock?

When it's made by coked-up 30 year olds whose idea of conversation with the opposite sex is 'do you swallow,' I suspect.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

i'm not an apologist for Louis XIV in the least, i like the concept a whole hell of a lot more than the end results. i just wish more bands had the balls to go all out like that, preferrably someone capable of writing decent tunes.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah I dunno, maybe that was a leap of logic. I just remember Anthony writing something on blog post once about how Franz Ferdinand were trading on danceability and "blatant sex appeal" and I was like wtf? those guys with the disembodied heads in the arty video? I mean at least there's something explicitly sexual about the Louis XIV's lyrics and not just the implied sexiness of corny cliche'd leather jacket cool.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

I heard their song "True Love is Blind" and thought it was another Johnny-come-lately ripping of Mark E. Smith's delivery. Nothing has made me change my opinion but it sounds like he usually doesn't sound like that.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

yah its too fall-y

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

I was talking about the MUSIC dude!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

the music is full of open-mouthed come-ons.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

who's hold steady, miccio?

talk-bellow of wry descriptive depravity over classic rock riffs, like Louis XIV only less crass. For a more euphoric description of their music you can search engine.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

the album is pretty bad. it's pretty same-y and boring, i only really like three songs (finding out true love, god killed the queen, all the little pieces) but i only like those songs because it reminds me of other stuff i like a lot better. some of the misogynistic moments are lame because they are so put-on ('show me a little tit').

they were embarassing w/ hot hot heat (ugh) and the futureheads (yay). during the futureheads's set, the short one from louis xiv was peering over the rafters above, possibly plotting revenge:

'damn you, futureheads! we want to be NME darlings! RELEVANCE!~!!1'

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Aren't most bands 5-10 years older than their audiences? I see nothing wrong with men in their mid-20s (or even early 30s) writing arrested-adolescent sex anthems, at least not as long as Mick fucking Jagger's still getting away with it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

George Smith:

I like the record, myself. They even sing about Stacey Q in one song!

Neither do I when it's Cheap Trick (or as mentioned AC/DC with Bon) or bands as good as them...which these dudes aren't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

The music substantially fails to shake my tailfeather.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
