Quasimoto - The Further Adventures of Lord Quas

Am I the only one who thinks this thing is a total dud? The Unseen was classic, but here it seems like Madlib can't stay focused; almost every song is either cut short or interrupted by some goofy vocal sample. Am I hearing this wrong?

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Didn't even know it had leaked yet...

That's a shame, though- the few tracks I'd heard so far ("Broad Factor," "Greenery" and a couple others whose titles I don't recall) seemed like an improvement over The Unseen.

Telephonething, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

I heard an advance and it was full of a pitched down "further adventures of lord quas" sample laid heavily all over the tracks to stem filesharing. Pretty annoying if you have a legit promo copy, I think Stones Throw has done this in the past as well.

seemed pretty good, but The Unseen would be hard to top.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Just listened to "Greenery" again, and I still love it, though it's pretty fucking weak of him to re-use the same Firesign Theatre sample as on "America's Most Blunted"...

Telephonething, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'm just judging too harshly...

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Damn it would be hard to top The Unseen. That remains my favorite Madlib-produced record. Everything he's done seems to have a similar feel - from the old Lootpack to Madvillain - but The Unseen is just the most entertaining and it flows the best from start to finish. Its definitely got more of my favorite Madlib moments than any other records he's done.

I've just recently re-discovered how amazing the beat for "Axe Puzzles" is. Sorta reminds me of My Bloody Valentine if the folks who did the OLD school Nintendo music had joined the band.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

I would be so disappointed if this turns out to be dud

Seuss, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

Report back after you've heard it; I feel like it's rambling, incoherent and unfocused, but I might be way off the mark.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

is "rambling, incoherent and unfocused" supposed to be a criticism of quasimoto in general? those might be the reasons why i dig lord quas.

natedey, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

this is brilliant, yeah its rambling, but its brilliant too.

ppp, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

To me the album never really gets moving.
It lacks the hop.
Just when a good beat gets moving he rips you out of the flow with some dumb ass vocal sample.
But that's lord quas! "Out there"

At least madlib gave up his damn elementary stoner tech of panning back and forth of vocal samples that have plagued his past albums.

6/10

I haven't heard this yet...but I felt the same way about Unseen at first (possibly because I heard it after Madvillainy)...i didn't "get" it until a hot summer day with a blunt, so I'd reserve impulsive judgement on this one

not so much - i just feel like on this one it's taken to an extreme that sabatoges the whole record.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

It took me like 2 months to get into the Unseen.. Im looking forward to getting to listen to the new one.. Hopefully I'll have the willpower to sit through repeated listens.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

there just isn't any flow. it becomes quite boring to listen to, and none of the tracks really separate themselves from the confused jumble of sound. i was surprised that Madlib brought Quas back for another full-length at all - even with my expectations not exactly high, this is probably the most disappointing hip-hop release of the year so far.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I have found it really boring too :( didnt even manage to finish listening to it.

karl76 (karl76), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

madlib has been sleepy since that wack ble note album

charleston charge (chaki), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Every track on The Unseen was cut short or interrupted by a goofy sample too. I like the format of that "Phony Game" song: 30 seconds of some Irish guy singing about playing the game to get the prize, 30 seconds of rapping, the 30 second Irish guy sample again, then 30 seconds of bong hits.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

yah madlib is pretty lazy sometimes

charleston charge (chaki), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Hey he has like 60,000 albums to relase in the next few months, leave him alone.

download the video to "rappcats pt3" fromhere, its really great!

zappi (joni), Monday, 2 May 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I can't see how anyone who appreciated The Unseen could find this disappointing...."further adventures" indeed, its merely an extension of the formula used on the first album (or rather, lack of form)...if you're expecting it to lock into a flow, look elsewhere, Quasimoto has always represented madlib at his most rambling, adventerous and stoned...there's plenty of that here, and its appeal lies in its randomness

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

the record is, like, *all skit. and all brilliant.

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Is this album worth buying? I honestly haven't heard anything from it but I'm a big fan of MF Doom and almost every Def Jux artist, and it sounds interesting.

Mike Copeland, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, quite good. my favorite of the recent madlib thingies

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

beware of soulseek: as happened with Madvillian, there are a lot of shared copies containing wrong songs (demo versions? outtakes?)...the real version is much more brilliant than the imposter I had originally downloaded

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Its blowing up metacritic for rlz.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Sixth best album ever!

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I bought a copy today, only to find that certain songs on it have been edited. Is this normal with all copies?

Christian, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Mine's like that too. I just chalked it up to Madlib/weirdness/stoned out of his mind/etc.

Telephonething, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

As mentioned on the Stones Throw message board, the biggest difference between the promo and the retail version is that the track "Seasons Change" is no longer on the album. (It samples a rare Roy Ayers track and Stones Throw couldn't get clearance.)

'fat backs' is my song for the summer.
