Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Besides, "Ride Like the Wind" is one of the most vapid songs of the '80s, not the '70s.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for pointing out the date error, Rickey.
It seems those bastards that run michaelmcdonald.com placed "Ride Like The Wind" in 1979 in his chronology.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Not at all bad.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Better than that. Techno-soul illuminated by cool gospel fire. "Just reach out and call His name." Micheal McD is a born harmony singer.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh come the fuck on; McDonald needs no defending. He may have one trick, but he does it so well. "Minute by Minute"? Great song. As is "What a Fool Believes."

He could sing from the phone book and I'd listen.

It's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

But what KIND of synths were used in the making of this record?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I've said enuff nasty things about M.M. (stands for "Mush Mouth") over the last 15 months, any more would be pure overkill. So I'm gonna lay off from now on. Anyways, I'm sure he's probably a cool guy and a really decent human being.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Plus, he can write!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

It may have been synth driven but it wasnt that bad.

but synths are good.

not that all songs with synths are good, but this one is.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

> but synths are good

Indeed they are, and Startrekman thinks so too, but he's not bright enough to have registered ILM's anti-rockist ethos. Because "synth driven" is a pejorative term in the likes of Rolling Stone, he imagines that most people prefer music made with, you know, real instruments.

As blue-eyed soul types go, Michael McDonald is a little underrated. (And he pisses on Michael Bolton from a tremendous height, but then so does the entire universe.)

Last week I was working on materials for a convention to be held by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. The featured performer? Michael McDonald (not a name that would drag me to New Orleans, but then no one did ask my opinion). I like to think that back in the day I would have tried to book the Ramones, in order for them to perform "Carbona Not Glue," but once again no one asked my opinion.
