Where does one start?

Is that "Bollywood Funk" compilation worth the big bucks they're charging?

Is Asha Bhosle really worth seeking out?

get thee to a file-sharing program, and find asha bhosle doing "dum maro dum" from "hare krishna hare rama." and just for the hell of it, get "choli ke peeche" from "khal nayak", even though it's from the 90s.

asha bhosle and lata mangeshar are both terrific singers (they're sistahs, tho i believe they hate each other): i saw lata and usha mangeshkar (another sistah?) sing at wembley in the early 80s, and it was easily one of the best shows i've ever seen

You can buy these DVDs with hundreds of Asha Bhosle songs on them for like 5 bucks at Indian shops. The CDs and tapes are probably even cheaper. I'm guessing that's a good place to start; my parents grew up listening to that stuff and that's what they listen to all the time.

You can start with Asha Bhosale sings for R D Burman (http://www.indiaplaza.com/catalog/catalogdetail/musicdetail.asp?itemid=89782&majorcat=music&subcat=audiocds&place=US) and then move on to any albums of R D Burman (http://www.indiaplaza.com/search/musicsearch.asp?place=US&val=burman&cat=name&majorcat=music&subcat=audiocds) except for the tributes and instrumentals. She is the coolest Indian singer for the western kinda hindi music.(for other which is inspired by Indian classical or folk her sister Lata is the best). R D Burman also happens to be the coolest music director of the 60s and 70s.

that Bollywood Funk compilation is great, although doesn't have any info on the tracks. the Bollywood Breaks one is pretty dull - they've just looped long instrumental sections of the tracks, but otherwise haven't remixed them or anything

the Golden Voices of the Silver Screen comps (3 vols) have information on the tracks and films, and cover earlier stuff (50s-60s, but is still very groovy). Jaan Pechan Ho from Gumnaam(sp?) which is what Enid watches at the start of Ghostworld is on one of these

The Doob Doob O'Rama comps are an excellent place to start - on Normal Records out of Germany. But as Kris said, if you live in or near a big city with a large Indian population, you can buy tapes for a few bucks apiece at a tape/video shop. I've also seen them on ebay going for 5 for 20 bucks. If you get seventies stuff, then twenty bucks is worth your money for five tapes. Also check out titles and costumes on the cover. I've got one called "Disco Dancer" and it lived up to its title.

i don't think Shalimar is all it's cracked up to be. it definitely doesn't deserve the 150$ price tag it pulls. my friend says it's actually not very rare in india. there are a few interesting tracks, but i've heard other soundtracks that blow it away. Zameen Aasman is probably my fave.
