the 70s poll (albs and singles) predictions and things are posted here, i guess

Okay, so when there's 40 albums left and people use deduction to be like "okay, so these are the albums that probably are going to be in the top 40" and then they just post them, and 39 out of 40 of them actually do make it to the top 40, and the whole thing is less fun that way, that gets posted here. If you want to. I mean, there's no way I can really stop you from just posting it in the thread with the poll results. But if you don't want to be a spoiler, then post it here I guess.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

This is just so that the thread gets unbolded in the "new answers" section, cos it's making me uncomfortable.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

What happened to this thread? Perhaps nobody could be bothered..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

I think your mom will win.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

If it prevents any predictions in the actual thread, it will have served its purpose. I personally wouldn't care if nothing got posted here.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I was looking forward to reading people's suggestions and sniggering behind my hand seeing who could do it best.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Innervisions (assuming it was nominated was it nominated?) should still show up, no?

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Am I crazy to think Fripp & Eno might make it?

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Innervisions (assuming it was nominated was it nominated?) should still show up, no?
-- RS (r...), April 27th, 2005.

Yes, it was.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

so yeah, I'll try this again.

my prediction, realizing that I forgot JD and Stevie (thought all three of his had already placed) the first time around:

12. Stevie - Innervisions
11. Blondie - Parallel Lines
10. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
9. T. Rex - Electric Warrior
8. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
7. Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
6. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
5. Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
4. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
3. The Clash - London Calling
2. The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
1. Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express

also could place:

Pink Floyd - Wall, Dark Side
Bruce - Born to Run
Roxy - Siren, Country Life
Who - Who's Next
Eno - Before & After

honestly though I have absolutely no clue what #1 will be.

And I really don't think Fripp & Eno have a shot.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

oh well there's #12.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Am I crazy to think Fripp & Eno might make it?

I would term this "batshit crazy."

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

I was just about to correct you with a few other suggestions, GDB, but it looks like you figured it all out on your own.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Although I don't think PiL will place at all. I'd sub in the Who.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh, heartily disagreed on that. Definitive post-punk album, no? And since when is ILM not all about post-punk? Much more so than overbloated canonized efforts by classic rock dinosaurs, anyway.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

You clowns are forgetting Marquee Moon.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Wait, how about Marquee Moon?
xpost

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Cor, you're right. I thought it had already placed. Yeah, that's a lock then.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

FUCK

New prediction:

11. Blondie - Parallel Lines
10. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
9. T. Rex - Electric Warrior
8. Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
7. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
6. Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
5. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
4. Television - Marquee Moon
3. The Clash - London Calling
2. The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
1. Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express

I'm playing the hopeful and bumping off Marvin, even though that's probably just extreme wishful thinking

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Not Blondie, or T-rex.

But who instead? But who?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I'd be v. surprised if T Rex doesn't make it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Who's Next and What's going on I guess.

Oh, and "Album connections:"

8. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
7. Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Those are the only two albums left that I'm rooting for!
(Parallel Lines and E. Warrior)

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

haha.

Even though evidence strongly suggests it, I can't believe either Blondie or T. Rex wouldn't make it. That's just so un-ILM.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Prediction (with 11 remaining)

Albums I voted for that must make it

Exile on Main Street
Blood on the Tracks
London Calling
Singles Going Steady
Marquee Moon
IV
Electric Warrior
Unknown Pleasures

(that's 8)

Albums I Voted For That Still Have a Chance (???)

Armed Forces
Cosmo's Factory (where is the CCR love?)
Bitches Brew

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Thought Bitches' Brew already placed?

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

(Which IV, the Stranglers? Or Chicago?)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

LZ IV and Bitches' Brew already made it (and if you're takling about the other IV's, dream on)

Armed Forces has a small chance, but say byebye to Cosmo's Factory.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, BB was #59.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Stevie at 12 was on the money.

Where is the Fripp&eno voting block?!

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I predict
1. Exile
2. Unknown pleasures
3. What's going on
4. Marquee Moon
5. London calling

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Hello, people, what about Hotel California???

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

1. Marquee Moon
2. etc.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

is the ILM Stones contingent that strong?

Hello, people, what about Hotel California???

...joke?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Is that a joke? There is very little Eagles love around here. (I don't like them by that point.)

x-post

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

I really thought Close to the Edge might have had a (top 100 not top 10 obv) chance with this poll. Ah well.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

whoops, Exile #11, I was swayed by the thread where everybody listed their ballots.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I'd be semi-overjoyed if Hotel California made it.

Also Boston s/t.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

...joke?

'twas a joke. Maybe on another poll, but not on ILM's.

Actually, that would totally rule if it was ILM's #1.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Oops. Guess those 4 cups of passover wine got to me. I missed those. Surprised Exile did NOT make the top 10 (or am I ruining it for you?).

I guess all those votes I gave to Brazilian artists were for naught...

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Actually, that would totally rule if it was ILM's #1.

seriously. The MOR classics have a better chance on the songs poll, I guess--that's what I'm really excited about.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I guess all those votes I gave to Brazilian artists were for nauht....

And I'd like to take this time to once more recommen Willie Colon & Ruben Blades's Siembra, without any bitterness that some much inferior albums are placing in this poll.

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully Hobart posts the full results at the end. I'm more interested to see the second 100 than the top 10.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

fuckin' Marv made top ten. Bad news for Blondie.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Of my albums list (31), well more than half are (will be) in the top 100.

Of my tracks list, I have no idea what will occur... predicting the tracks is a much much more difficult task

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Be more eclectic next time.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Me, Grout? In this setting (ILM-world), I'm mainstream

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Of the ten I voted for, six made it, two (Metal Box & LC) presumably will and Boston s/t and Born to Run most likely won't.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Let's predict #101. I say Parallel Lines

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Before and After Science

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Before and After Science was #100 on the PFM poll, interestingly enough.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe HCTWJ is gonna be his highest rated album.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

1 unknown pleasures
2 london calling
3 blood on the tracks
4 parallel lines
5 metal box
6 trans-europe express
7 close to the edge
8 there's a riot goin' on
9 marquee moon

Oh, but there's only 8 left... but I *refuse* to sacrifice Close To The Edge...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, if you dont, someone else will...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Singles! Singles! Singles!

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

i have never understood the appeal of blood on the tracks. i am not a big dylan fan but his sixties albums (esp. highway 61 and blonde on blonde) are so much superior to everything after.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I agree with you about Blood on the Tracks. I must be wrong.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so I guess the question now is which of these does NOT make it?

Blood on the Tracks
Trans-Europe Express
Electric Warrior
There's a Riot Goin' On
Marquee Moon
London Calling

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Trans-Europe Express obv!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hang on - I'm not sure Electric Warrior will make it either.

Are you definitely not missing anything?

I'm still hoping for Station to Station.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

There's still those two Pink Floyd albums, but if they were going to show up, they'd have done so by now, I reckon.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure I can love a world where Second Edition is top 10 and Who's Next isn't even top 100. Jeez, have you heard Second Edition?!

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so I guess the question now is which of these does NOT make it?

ARRGH this is driving me in insane. It *has* to be T.Rex, no?? There's no way Man Machine beats Trans Europe in a poll like this. Just no way.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Gotta be T. Rex. That's crazy, but there's no way any of those otehr albums didn't make it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

i've heard second edition - it's great!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

T-Rex seems v.unlikely to make it to me, but I always thought the Man machine was the most popular Kraftwerk album, I must say.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

judging solely from the early returns thread, which might be as misleading as the exit polls that had us taking virginia (nevermind the election as a whole) last november, i stand by my guess that either marquee moon or there's a riot goin on takes it.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

T-Rex seems v.unlikely to make it to me, but I always thought the Man machine was the most popular Kraftwerk album, I must say.

This may or may not be the case, but if it is, it's certainly not by so large a margin.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

weird now that unknown pleasures is gone there is nothing left. the remaining six albums all are rather dire in my music universe. but the seventies were awful in my memory as well. so that's ok.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

5. Blood on the Tracks
4. Electric Warrior
3. Marquee Moon
2. London Calling
1. Trans-Europe Express

Michael Copeland, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

whoa buzzcocks. i'm pretty shocked if t.rex isn't there.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Does most T. Rex sound like "Get It On"?

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

yes, sundar. only less good. definitely a singles band which shouldn't figure in the album thread. just ignore me...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Sundar, ignore Electric Warrior at your peril. For years I didn't get it because all I knew was "Get It On." Big mistake.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I almost bought Electric Warrior at lunch today, but it was like $18.99. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

So I guess the top 5 will be Pitchfork's 2-6 from their 70s poll?

How the hell did Electric Warrior not make it? I thought they were one of ILM's most beloved bands.

I'm also really surprised From Here to Eternity didn't make the list. Not that I was expecting it in the top 10, but I thought it would make the top 100 for sure.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

My guess is..

1. Marquee Moon
2. Riot Goin' On
3. London Calling
4. Trans-Europe Express
5. Blood On The Tracks

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Every Picture Tells a Story hasn't come up at all, has it? FuX0rs.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Hysteria better be top 10 if we do an 80s poll.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Does most T. Rex sound like "Get It On"?

Yes and no. All T. Rex songs are silly but their early work can be a little more stripped down and isn't so classic rock friendly in America. The most well known T Rex songs in America are the ones with big guitars like in Get It On.

John Peel was a huge T Rex fan and I remember reading him disliking Get It On.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh wow, Blondie made it after all. Great, didn't think it would.

So, which albums are sitting on the couch getting all excited, only to be severely gutted once the number one is announced?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 April 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

So, last two.

Leaving

"London Calling"
"There's a riot going on"
"Electric Warrior"

and, alright.. "Close to the edge" if you insist.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

STATION TO STATION 4EVER LONDON CALLING NEVAH

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

no1 is 'metal machine music' isn't it?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

no love for Frampton anywhere

Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

I only own 26 of the top 100 albums. Should I resign my membership?

in other news: what comes next: 80s or 60s? ?

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I thought we agreed on the 50s.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

80's next, definitely.

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Hold your horses, people - we still haven't done the tracks poll.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see the 50s next (and do vaguely remember that that we'd agreed on that, whatever "we" "agreed on" might mean).

RS, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I guess I missed that debate. 50's-60's would be perfectly fine for songs, but I don't think it's as interesting to do albums for those decades since the LP format wasn't dominant in rock or r&b until the mid 60's.

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

What about other genres though?

RS, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

This doesn't have to be limited to rock and R&B.

RS, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Doing the 50s will level the playing field in a way, since hardly any of us were alive then (even some older posters like me).

RS, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Keith - JAZZ!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

This doesn't have to be limited to rock and R&B.

Oh, of course not. In fact, if I voted for 50's albums it'd be mostly jazz and vocal stuff anyway. But rock and r&b would get the shaft, though.

Don't get me wrong, I never met a poll I didn't like.

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

please no 50s or Jazz polls
