DUDEZ! Please help me make a SHOEGAZER DJ Set

Message Bookmarked

Ok, So I got invited to mix next month, to this artsy place, and instead of the usual electro, I'm tempted to come up with a shoegazer DJ Set just for kicks.

What songs should be on it?

Of course, some My Bloody valentine, Sunshine Smile, by adorable, Sugar by Ladytron and Heavy lifting from Ambulance LTD.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way: I mix using Final Scratch and Traktor DJ.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Machine Gun by Slowdive.

Wait, hold on here -- is this meant to be a *dance* set or a shoegaze chill set?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

"Pearl" by Chapterhouse is a must, yes.
"Time Machine" by Ride
"Fait Accompli" by Curve

Hey, thanks for the answers. Could you reccommend some individual songs?
TIA.

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

To answer the previous poster. I would like a Dancey, more upbeat set. Thanks.

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Call me a traditionalist, but if you can't come up with a set (or at least most of a set) on your own, should you be DJing it?

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Call me whatever you like. I'm just asking for help. Who cares?

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

I will post the preliminary set tomorrow. Thanks for your suggestions.

the problem with DJ'ing in 2005, laid bare.

Truth.

And original poster, just put on a 4AD comp. Its pretty ridiculous that you want to do a smarmy, elitist music set when you don't know enough music to put it together yourself. Its like ... second hand elitism.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, because EVERY SINGLE DJ was born knowing ALL THE GENRES in the universe.

I listen to all kinds of music, I just happened to fancy playing a little shoegazer in a party.

Why don't you have a tall, warm glass of STFU, whiners?

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

By the way, thanks to all the people that contributed with actual song names. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and before I forget... a friend warned me about the elitist whiners that keep screeching bullshit when somebody dares to ask a fucking question. Well, kill yourselves and fuck the body, basement boi's.

HOLLA!

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

kids at my hometown bar used to regularly shake it to ride's "vapour trail", it's very danceable, in that i'm-so-drunk-i'm swaying way. "hot sun trail" by the german band guitar has a nice beat. i agree with the 4ad comp idea, though it's lazy..there's plenty of ways to update a shoegaze set for a dancier feel...toss on a morr music comp, for one. superpitcher "here comes love". colder "again". christian kleine. not shoegaze per se but it approximates. dig up slowdive's "in mind" single. it's endless. www.boomkat.com. www.posteverything.com. hope it's helpful

Rachel S, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

the remix of paris angels' "perfume" and field mice "missing the moon" are blissy enough to fit in.

if the thread had been titled 'danceable shoegaze tracks' we wouldnt be so quenched with hatorade. the problem with ilm in 2005 laid bare.

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Some Brits:
* Flying Saucer Attack -- "In the Light of Time"
* Amp -- "Souvenir"
* Spirea X -- "Speed Reaction" (if you're feeling upbeat)

Also, may I suggest a few American acts (who in my opinion are far better than C. Wheel or Slowdive or any of the second / third tier Brit. shoegazers):
* Bright -- "Yeah! Holy Stones"
* The Lilys -- anything from "In the Presence of Nothing" esp. "Claire Hates Me" or "Tone Bender"
* The Swirlies -- pretty much anything from "They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days..."

Mike McGillicutty, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

if the thread had been titled 'danceable shoegaze tracks' we wouldnt be so quenched with hatorade

Actually, if the thread had been titled "I plan on making people listen to me spin shoegaze even though I know jack shit about it -- how can I fool them?" then the hatorade wouldn't have been served so cold.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

goddamn djs, always makin people listen to em spin. does asking for recommendations = knowing jack shit about something? perhaps people are projecting their own desire to 'fool' audiences onto this poster.

this may be stretching it, but jesus and mary chain - reverence

Smashing Orange - "Only Complete In You"

Don't really give a damn about most of these bands, but there's a Smashing Orange best of coming out very soon on Elephant Stone that I'll probably jump for.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Rachel S (rachels), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

When I was a callow youth back in '91 the indie disco at university was shoegaze-heaven. These tracks always rocked the joint:

Coast Is Clear - Curve
Suzanne - Moose
Throwing Back The Apple - Pale Saints

If you can get hold of a copy, the Weatherall remix of MBV's Soon still sounds militantly funky whilst fulfilling the shoegaze brief.

Looking fwd to seeing the setlist.

Bill A (Bill A), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

You *MUST* incorporate The MFA 'The Difference it Makes' (Superpitcher remix).

Whipping Boy "I Think I Miss You". Trust me.

fuck the ethical arguments. this is a chance for you to resurrect the patented grimly fiendish "frou frou foxes in midsummer fires"/"morningrise" segue. which rocks gazes like a mogadon muthafucka. do it!

it only took me one sentence to say what you did in four

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

well thats your special talent isn't it.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

now that you mention it...

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

look, i'm not anti-DJ. i happen to have been one for pay at various poiunts in my life. of course i know a good dj from a bad one and a good one can certainly make a good night that much better.
but at the end of the day,
records without a dj >>>>>>> a dj without records
and too many DJs these days seem to forget that, wanting to cop the superstar attitude and all the bullshit trappings that go with it
and imho that's what's killed DJ culture. no one likes to deal with self-important pricks, and this thread helped to illustrate that as much as anything else could hope to

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

>records without a dj >>>>>>> a dj without records
this must be where we differ. i can listen to records at home. a DJ can boost that experience tenfold. a good DJ can take two records i have at home and make me hear both of them in new ways. a good DJ can take a record i heard in the shop earlier that day and show me that i shouldn't have passed on it.

as for the superstar attitude, that's the club scene, not necessarily dj'ing. are you from london/UK? the self-important prick thing would make more sense, if only that i associate lots of british dj's with that attitude. most of people i know here in SF whove been DJing for more than two years are music junkies just like you and me, and in the past four or five years we've seen people become DJ's who only want to be the guy behind the turntables "rocking the party" paul oakenfold-style, without really being a)a fan of music or b)particularly deft with the turntables. now this has been happening longer in the dance scene, but the difference was that the ambitious folks who desired the kill over the hunt in the dance scene knew that there were steps you had to take - you had to learn how to mix being the main one. now you're seeing kids who are young enough to have no real frame of reference for DJ'ing other than it being cool in a very hip fashionable way just cutting to the 'i'm looking very cool pumping my fist to this franz ferdinand record with my fauxhawk hella styled' without any of the talent, knowledge, actual work. which, if i have to spell it out, is a disservice to the people who actually are talented, knowledgable and work very hard at what they do, not because they want to be superstar dj's, but because they love music, they love making people dance and they love turning people on to their idea of good music.
the poster above wants all the cachet of being a cool in-the-know dj who knows the genre enough to play a killer set, yet doesn't want to do any of the work involved. no buying records, no research on the net even - i mean how hard is it to google 'shoegazer' - he wants people already in the know to just hand it to him on a plate. i have a problem with that.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

jackson - radio caca, run into flowers remix, utopia
daft punk - emotion

Fetchboy (Felcher), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

goddamn the guy was just asking for some opinions on good songs. how do you know how much cachet he wants or how much internet research he's done, and who cares? every time i think i've found an online forum for exchanging information and discussion, i remember how they're really all about power trips. i know it's hard on the faceless net to distinguish between an inquisitive music lover and a scenester but it's disheartening to see that people are still petty enough to think they can deduce that information from a bunch of 1s and 0s.

the promoters paying lazy kids to dj and all the sour-faced elitists contribute more to the death of dj culture than any fad.

Rachel S (rachels), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

>i know it's hard on the faceless net to distinguish between an inquisitive music lover and a scenester

it wasn't that hard. the tip-offs:

>instead of the usual electro
>I'm tempted to come up with a shoegazer DJ Set just for kicks
followed by
>What songs should be on it?

what definition of 'come up with' is he using here?

>goddamn the guy was just asking for some opinions on good songs.
not quite. he wanted people to give him a list of songs to play at a dj gig from which he will either get money or more dj gigs. whether he's getting paid or not, there's probably someone better qualified who would appreciate the shot at playing music they have some investment (emotional or financial) in. which is part of what i see as the problem: hipsters with neat haircuts and no music getting dj gigs over regular folks with skills and taste. call me sour-faced, fine. i guess i must look like that as i watch the integrity of a culture gutted by people whose rallying cry is 'who cares'?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

nice. snark all you want.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

this also has a lot to do with watching people take a large source of your income away. i'll readily admit this is happening to me as well as a lot of the people i know, but many of us went from making a significant income from dj'ing making us comfortable financially to losing all our gigs as the guard changed out and barely scraping by. only to be replaced by people with none of the skill, no ear, no taste and no desire to improve. wouldn't you be sour too?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

no, i'd realize that i'd milked an occupation for more than it was probably worth in the first place and move on.

oh wait, i've done that already

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah, you're totally superior in every way. thanks for reminding me.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

it'd also be nice if you had an actual argument instead of snarky comments.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

not superior at all. just trying to help you get past this bad bitter spot in life. as one has-been-dj to another

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

speak for yourself, mate.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

well you can't have it both ways. you're "sour" and losing income (and your edge) to the kids coming up from behind and want to whine about it and bitterly take it out on some poor kid who asks a question on a messageboard (that somehow is exempt from the internet research you're so powerfully touting). yet you assure us you're not a has-been-dj, not.

how can it be?

hmmm?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

could some people plz post more dancey shoegazey songs???

Fetchboy (Felcher), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Spirea X - Chlorine Dream
The Telescopes - Celeste
NPL's cover of Love Song for the Dead Che
Secret Shine - Loveblind

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Oooo-wee! SHOEGAZE! The mega $$$$ are MINE!!!

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Curve's "Ten Little Girls"
Chapterhouse "Falling Down"
Pale Saints "Half Life Remembered"
Cocteau Twins "Pitch The Baby"

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

i was referring to this 'bad bitter spot in [my] life' rather than being a has-been. i never even 'was' in the first place, i just got regular work. but, fine, i'm a has-been dj. i can fully accept that. dj'ing was never about 'being' anything for me -- i like mixing records, i'm particularly good at it, and the club holds all my friends while my apartment doesn't. simple.

as for the internet research comment -- even though its a small one, i see a clear difference between googling search terms and checking out, say, wikipedia, finding song titles, then d/l'ing the tunes and finding the ones you like best for your dj gig (ie "doing it yourself") and going to people and just asking "do this for me". once you do this your motivations are in question. why do it then?

still you seem to think its okay that DJ'ing has become this substanceless, throwaway thing to a whole generation of kids who don't care to know any better. i'm not making a blanket statement about all things - sometimes irreverence is fantastic. but what's happening with dj'ing right now isnt new, it isn't interesting, it isn't even that fun. if the kids were throwing great parties, i'd be down, i really wouldn't care! am i tainted by knowing better?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

and just to prove im not a complete asshole, here's my favorite shoegazer tunes:

chapterhouse 'falling down' is perfect
lush 'sweetness and light'
curve 'no escape from heaven'
spiritualized 'run'
ride 'like a daydream'
velocity girl 'my forgotten favorite'
mbv - soon weatherall mix

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

so you think if he went to wikipedia and searched shoegaze, he'd find a list of songs, download the songs and then listen and choose the ones he liked. but by asking here, he's eliminating the second part of that equation and truly taking all our suggestions directly to the club? i mean he's still going to download the songs, listen to them and choose the ones he likes. he's just taking advantage of the fact that lots of people here lived through that era and have various personal memories of good tracks, rather than just one persons (as the entry at wikipedia was probably written by)

i'm really not trying to single you out, the whole rage against the kid thing just seems a bit misdirected.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

fair enough, then. im full of shit on that one. i still have a problem with downloading an entire dj set's worth of music to play out at a club, but if he's reading, i'd like to apologize to the guy for being so harsh.

that said i there there is still a legit topic of discussion here.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

well done heywood

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd be more sympathetic to the kid (having no stake or interest in dj culture) if he hadn't behaved like such a potty-mouthed baby. I'd guess that one of the skills a dj (like any other performer) should have would be dealing with criticism? If you accuse everyone who questions your motives or competence of having been molested as a child, does that really help your case? It's alwasy amusing to read someone storming out of a thread in a huff "I'm never coming back here again, you big bullies!!"

666, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I still think he's full of shit for wanting someone to do the work for him. Not out of elitism or a power trip, as other people have suggested, but because I think being able to mix and play music comes from a certain understanding of the conventions and style of that genre. Maybe if he listed some suggestions of his own that weren't Ladytron, I wouldn't think he's such a douchebag. Or if he didn't storm off in a huff. I wonder what he'll do when the people who booked him thinking he was an electro DJ start scowling on the first few notes of Slowdive.

And because he's an electro DJ and is doing this "for a lark." Fuck that.

OK I think if you play Lush you should DEFINITELY include "For Love"
Other suggestions:

Pale Saints - "Half Life, Remembered"
Slowdive - "Alison" (a bit slow thought), "Catch the Breeze"
Moose - "Last Night I Fell Again"

Oh, and check out Malory if you can (no specific titles, sorry).

I JUST WANTED TO MIX SHOEGAZER SONGS BECAUSE I WAS INVITED TO PLAY SOME SONGS AT AN ART EXHIBIT IN TIJUANA. I DON'T THINK I WILL GET PAID, BUT IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC.

AND FOR THE RECORD, I OWN 1200 CD'S, OF SEVERAL GENRES, LATIN JAZZ, ROCK EN ESPAÑOL, HOUSE, ETC.

JUST STOP SCREECHING DUDEZ. LOSE THE ATTITUDE, DAMMIT.

TO THE GUY THAT MADE AN APOLOGY, MY PROPS BECAUSE HE WAS BRAVE ENOUGH TO RECOGNIZE A MISTAKE AS I DID.

DO NEVER TEST ILX NERDZ = THEY WILL TRY TO EAT YOU ALIVE AND SERVE YOU THE HATORADE- PROBABLY BECAUSE THEIR JANITOR JOBZ DON'T CUT IT.

MABS,
SIGNING OFF

P.S. YES, I WROTE IT IN ALLCAPS, WHO THE HELL GIVES A FUCK?
