i'm very upset with ILM right now for not proclaiming the greatness of Weevil

ILM's always so OTM about things, so how has Weevil's Drunk on Light been slept on? this is the true heir to Hex's sacred mantle; the album that Codename:Dustsucker was so disappointing for falling short of being. and yet not a peep about it or its architects in the archives, just some scoffing at the band's unfortunate name. if you can listen to "A Million Things" without feeling it, i mean, really, either you're not listening, you're lying to yourself, or your watch hasn't stopped but your heart has.

why didn't i hear about Weevil here first? is this how it's gonna be from now on? we have to go out and discover such prizes on our own?

i'm listening to "silver rails" right now. it's a lovely little album. admittedly i bought it because it was on Wichita, it was a pleasant surprise it's so good.

i was completely unaware they'd previously put stuff out on Where It's At Is Where You Are

I remember hearing a Weevil song about six years ago but nothing since then... Ned I think Gruf (remember him?) was into them!

Jim is the album out in Australia?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Ned I think Gruf (remember him?) was into them!

Ah! That would make excellent sense. :-) Whatever happened to Gruf, he was a good egg.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

He was indeed. He was also the first person to mention Papa Sprain to me I think (and I still haven't heard them).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Tim, yep the album came out locally here.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

aside from the May EP, i've found Papa Sprain to be a huge letdown. the ideas were there - "Tech Yes," haha - but the music was just never as memorable as McKendry's Butterfly Child cognation promised. maybe if i weren't such a BC fanatic, i'd be more lenient.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I might have to seek this out. Not to be confused with the cajun band of the same name (but I guess that they're probably the lesser of the two Weevils).

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

*applause!*

very very good album, yes, lovely. but you're right, absolutely nobody writes about them ever! pity.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

considering that the otherwise compos mentis Todd Stylus gave it a D+ (!), that may be for the better. let Weevil remain our little secret.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I hear no Bark Psychosis in it at all, to me it seems like another hard-to-distinguish indie/electronic pop record with maybe some moody/dreampop ovetones (which isn't that rare of an influence today.)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

they are great notwist fans. the two songs from the new lp on their site esp. silver rails sound very much like that german electro indie pop band. the singer has a similar thin voice like acher. i don't know hex but codename was absolutely phantastic. much more impressive than those two weevil songs for sure.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Notwist comparison makes a lot more sense.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i don't know hex but codename was absolutely phantastic

your second statement only makes sense in light of your first.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

It's true Alex, Codename: Dustsucker really isn't a patch on Hex.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...Tim, did you read Stripey's discussion of the album on here from last year? It won't change your opinion but I thought it was a beautiful, strong case for Codename's merits.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh I like it a lot too (and Stripey's post was great). But Hex is a bit of a desert island disc for me.

What surprised me abotu C:D was how... indieish it sounded? I'm not sure if I can convey what I mean here. Something about the guitars. It's like the Come On Die Young to Hex's Rock Action.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Heheh. A regression instead of progression, if you will?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah definitely, although it's not fatal and it's fairly understandable given the time lag between the two albums.

There's a liquid weightlessness to Hex which C:D rarely matches, even though it is often very beautiful.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

liquid weightlessness

A wonderful phrase! I think it's the (occasional) use of keyboard (Hammond?) that contributes the sense of liquidity, that you're simultaneously floating free in space and rising up through something -- though it's not necessarily an aspirational experience a la Laughing Stock.

Now for some reason I thinking about Fennesz. For some other reason I also am thinking about "Lose Control."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
The first track on the Weevils album is so much like Hex it's not true.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

The failure to name an album Axis of Weevil disappoints me.
