Hey look I can be bitter about kids and the internet too

from a personal tirade written one night about kids ironically liking only the radio hits from the 90s:

i mean it's just downright insulting.

for years we had to search out obscure titles in poorly published fanzines, liner notes from second-hand vinyl, trading notes with fellow "weirdos" at live shows for small bands touring on a shoestring budget just to learn of bands. Then hours, days weeks rummaging through dusty cramped shops run by pretentious assholes who marked up the records we craved simply because they enjoyed watching us squirm and stroke their egos as tastemakers. we attended live shows of bands to learn about other bands, to watch creations of scenes, sounds, genres, worlds in motion, all the while trying to escape the horrid bullshit that was playing on the radio because it was too easily digestible, stole riffs from all our favorite bands without ever namechecking them, whored themselves on mtv and commercial radio, sold the fuck out.

Then along comes the internet, levels the playing field, making it easier than ever to learn about bands, connect with other fans, research whole movements of sound, get COMPLETE DISCOGRAPHIES! . Then comes online shopping, making it possible to buy those record directly from the labels, distributors, other fans, shops that carried amazingly, impossibly broad selections that brick n mortar shops never dreamt of

Then comes an even wider range of filesharing apps, making it possible to sample and hear any and all music at almost any time, hearing anything you want to and not having to swallow the pap that commercial radio had been shoveling down people's throats for years

and what do you pick? the same horrid bullshit that was playing on the radio all these years.

you fucking ingrate pricks

see heywood, i can be bitter too.

What, are you sitting in 'the kids' room and berating them 24/7?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

once in a while it makes me feel better Ned. sorta purges my soul of the piss and venom that comes from growing older

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

People can listen to whatever they want, though. That's the point!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the 90s were awesome

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I want to see some serious ILMism here guys, don't let me down.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to ironically sing along to some Deep Blue Something in the meantime, if you guys don't mind.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Ovation, what motivation? She comes round and she goes down on me.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

And I'll make you smile like a drug for you. Do ever that you wanna do coming over you. Keep on smile the world we go through, want stop to the rhythm that divides you. And I sing to you like the chorus to the verse, drop another line like a coda with a curse.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

said I don't know why you couldn't just stay with me YOU COULDN'T STAND TO BE NEAR ME

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Brother speaks righteous, sister says "Funky"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

They can listen to whatever they want as long as I don't sneak up behind them and slap their ears, thus bursting their eardrums (and killing them).

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

it's just laziness
if it were preference i could understand/tolerate/not want to smash up things, but it's just laziness

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

What, are you sitting in 'the kids' room and berating them 24/7?

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting the gritty teeth thing now. It says this contains "Guarana-Siberian Ginseng Blend." What does this mean?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

horrid bullshit that was playing on the radio because it was too easily digestible, stole riffs from all our favorite bands without ever namechecking them, whored themselves on mtv and commercial radio, sold the fuck out.

Did it ever occur to you that "the kids" have fresh ears, and are hearing this stuff without the psychological baggage that you have personally attached to it?

it's just laziness
if it were preference i could understand/tolerate/not want to smash up things, but it's just laziness

This is surely a path to an early grave.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 21 April 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)
