Role Playing Games

Inspired by the release of Dungeons And Dragons: the Movie (complete rubbish, oh how surprising) - how many contributors to this forum have a seedy past in role-playing games, and which were the best and worst ones? By all means use the popsvengali@hotmail.com address yourselves to protect your anonymity if you wish.

A friend.

They're all about equal, if you have a good GM (gamemaster). In fact, some of my favorite gaming was just role-playing _without_ any kind of mechanics. Of course, I was never a hardcore hack-n-slasher. Rolling dice for hours is not my idea of fun.

Goth sensibility = White Wolf products. V:TM, in other words...

D&D -- my middle school to high school existence, on and off. Thanks to a couple of really good GMs, though, it worked well more often than not.

UCLA brought _Call of Cthulhu_ with a bunch of similarly minded friends -- sf types, goths and metalheads. I approved and it all wrapped up my last couple of months there with a live-action game -- the details of which are scarily available on the web:

http://gsa.asucla.ucla.edu/~enigma/games/groovy.html

After that, it was more a matter of recovering from my SCA-addicted roommates.

Hah! I was *right* about the SCA in AICON! That is so hype. Anyway, I played Magic: The Gathering from 8-9 grade. It was hella fun, until they kept introducing new stupid expansion packs and there wer too many cards for the tight-level complexity that I enjoyed in the first place. I played a white and blue deck mainly structured a round stasis/flight/counterspell/life

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, trust me Sterling, I was *never* in the SCA. Might have been tempted, sure, but then when I lived with two people who were heavily involved, I saw how much they had lost touch with reality and proceeded to swear off such thoughts. Long, long story there.

For my generation (anyone who's about 20 and below now) it is always Games Workshop I think. But we all grew out of it by the time we were 14. They cut the role-playing bits anyway, possibly to make it appeal to small boys bloodwish...everyone just ended up having massive badly painted armies instead...

out of interest, would anyone regard Games Workshop as a bit of a sell-out from the 'good old days' of D+D?

well i've only RPed in a group once oe twice, i liked it but no one i know does it. occasionally i'll RP online justm for fun and bordom.

and when you said RPG i thought you meant a game, like a FF or somthing, ::sigh:: i'll have enough money to get FF9 someday

Mog, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bill, you are completely right. GW had a stack of ace RPgames and then fucked them over to appeal to 8 year olds, even warhammer was a decent wargame at one point before they started bending the rules to fit the new figures that came out every month.

Anyone want to buy about 350 goblins?

carsmilesteve, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
I have a seedy present in role playing games. Contrary to the streotype, I have found Call of Cthulhu to be a handy way of meeting attractive young women.

Comics and role-playing games????

I had no idea Wednesday had been designated Geek Day.

Oh, and I would love to know how misTer AnOnyMous knows that D&D:the Movie is crap -- you mean someone is actually admitting to seeing this movie? Jesus.

Nicole, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought we'd grown out of scoffing at people because we don't share their interests. Evidently not.

The Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was teasing...thought that it was obvious, apparently not. sorry...

Nicole, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was I who saw the D & D movie with Mr Alex Thomson and let my experience be a lesson to you all.

BEFORE FILM: "This will be shite"

AFTER FILM: "God, that was apalling"

2 HOURS AFTER FILM IN PUB: "So hold on, he was a Druid then? Were there any Clerics?"

NEXT MORNING IN COMPUTER LAB: "Look look I've found the website and bulletin board."

DON'T DO IT KIDS!

I think I can claim the prize as most tragic fux0r on this thread. I never got into the games, but I did like painting the little white metal people. Tom Meier (sp?) remains something of a hero. As far as RPG in general goes, like trekkies, it's much less the boys only club U might think. Lotsa grrls (at least this was the case back in the day) They were all a bit weird, but so were/are the boys, so there you are. Nowadays, I prefer quake.

I'll get my coat.

well i'd better out myself as an exDM, also rolled with the ex-editor of WD inma skooldaze, prefered traveller - i was gonna see the film but E says it sucked. painting figures - if i ever see blue apple boy again i iz hecklin' ;)

high rolla, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No RP background whatsoever, but "boys-ONLY-club"? No reason why this shd be so: Xena = Xena = warrior-grrrls in leather = Xena. And then there's Joanna Russ and Pat Califia (tho Pat is no longer actually a grrrl, I believe, so I'm not sure what point s/he proves).

mark s, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't go see blueappleboy on my account, racer, old chap. Was edged out last monday, & am no longer in "employ" ov "soporific foundation". Bummer.

AAAaaand....I didn't say it was a boyz-only club, did I? Just pointing out that the "received wisdom" abt these things is, as is so often the case wrong. a propos of what, I don't really know...

Not seen it, but I noticed how many different production/financing companies there are at the beginning of the trailer. The majors are notably absent. It looks like the idea's been hawked around LA for decades, maybe they were waiting for a revival or access to cheap technology, then eventually put together with independent money cause no one would back it.

two months pass...
I thought I'd managed to block this all out...

It's like those scars the folks in _Blair Witch 2_ got after their orgy/killing spree - you're in for life.

I just hope you all have witnessed the Dead Alewives' version of D&D Hell. CLASSIC. GRATE, even.
