Orthrelm - OV (New Album On Ipecac)

Anybody besides me heard this yet? It's totally insane; breaking with previous Orthrelm tradition, it's a single 45-minute piece rather than a million little pieces. It's also insanely repetitive, looping the same 3- or 4-note figure for minutes at a time, except it's not a loop, 'cause I've seen them do it live - they just stare into each other's eyes and go. This thing is literally maddening to try and listen to. I imagine their fanbase is gonna wet themselves with joy, but everyone else will be utterly baffled. At least with earlier Orthrelm releases, the unwary could get a cheap laff from the sheer wackedness of it. This thing, though, is so head-down and up-its-own-ass (yes, at the same time!) that I really can't, at this moment, imagine a more alienating musical gesture. Maybe if Autechre remixed it. But even then, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the heads up. I had forgotten about this coming out.

I really enjoyed that split release they did with Touchdown. The one with a zillion tracks was a bit impenetrable.

But really, they are a wonderous, incredibly unique duo.

Yngwie meets Phillip Glass.

Probably the best rock update of 20th century composition since Glenn Branca.

Anyone else see them wreck shop on this piece opening for the locust?

Christopher R. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I recognise those words but that sentence makes no sense. When I saw them support The Locust, however, they were one of the most *compelling* bands I've ever seen, although I'm hesistant to say whether they were great or ghastly. Looking forward to hearing this, whatever

When is this out?

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

If there was ever a band MEANT to be on Ipecac.

Have to listen to this one on headphones, it drives my girlfriend up the wall.
It's hypnotising. I'm floored by this!

Today I bought this old Orthrelm album:

http://www.millionraces.com/Images/31GCover.jpg

I was looking for Ov, but this was in the used bin for $3, and Ov was only available new for $15, so I got this. It's not quite what I was expecting.

Here is what I expected - really psychadelically, sort of krautrockish repetitive metal. Sort of Lightning Bolt but darker, eviler. Like Lightning Bolt meets black metal. But also a little noisy and pretty droney. Long, continuous dronish tracks. Reference: more metalish Sunn O))) or Khanate or something.

And what I actually got was this - super short grindcore-ish tracks. It's more like Lightning Bolt meets Melt-Banana or The Locust or something. The average track length is something like 1-2 minutes. It's the opposite of droney.

So here's the question: will I be disappointed with Ov? Is it really similar to this earlier album, or did they change my mind and turn into what I expected them to be?

I thought you didn't like Sunno))) and Khanate though?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

i guess droney could be a way to describe it. it's playing the same note or series of short patterns of notes over and over and over and over and over for a very long time (minutes sometimes) without changing. i put it on at a dinner party last night as a joke and almost got cheese smashed on my head

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I do like them, just that the live show was insanely boring. On record, it makes good background music for reading or late night listening.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

jaxon, is the music continuous?

One thing that annoys me about the grindcorish album I have is how fragmented it is. They'll play a super-fast thing for about 2 seconds, pause in complete silence for 1 second, and then repeat. I don't like that stuff.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's one 45minute track

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

This sounds awesome

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

You mean: reprehensible?

ng-unit, Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

you won't like OV. after reading reviews, my hopes were up (for drone-ish repetition, which it is). but it turned out to be annoying and sorta numbing. not pleasant. definitely comparable to steve reich music (it's gonna rain, come out to show them). it's chirpy, tense, and not very dimensional, even with the changes. it's interesting to hear the picking patterns and minor fluctuations in the drumming patterns. i gave it to a friend.

rssl, Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

"annoying" in that it demanded my attention but wasn't very interesting. i had an idea in my head that it would be slower, deeper, and maybe less agitated. or something. it just seemed really taut and lacking textural variety. sure, it's impressive, but not very useful.

rssl, Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

it's awesome, it's continues but it shifts constantly from one riff to the other.

I've had a download of OV for a while, and found it maddening. But I just bought the disc tonight after seeing the band perform it in Knoxville. I don't know that I'll like the record any more than I did, but the show was incredible -- one of the most intense displays of proficiency I've ever seen. The sheer repetitiveness of it became kind of profound after a while.

Did you see Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 18 February 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

No, I left right after Orthrelm finished. They're playing again soon at the Pilot Light, so I may go then.

Orhtrelm was one of those really intense (I'm tempted to say near-perfect, but I won't) experiences -- I didn't have it in me to watch another set.

mte22 (mte22), Monday, 20 February 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

everyone I know that went described it as incredible. The bassist for Midnight bomber is a guitarist in my band -- he hasn't shut it for several days in re: how mind-blowing it was. He said people would intermittently cry out in pleasure.

allmusic review begins 'Few albums will test your endurance like Orthrelm's OV' but that is wrong wrong wrong baby because frankly this was a joy and a blessing to sit through - very easy on the mind, not one of those albums you gotta take breaks from because it's all too much (ahem fantomas i may be looking at you)

it's one of the best ambient albums ever made, i think. my definition of ambient. whatever. i love it.

also love it.

but my cat def seemed to hate it.

original bgm, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

You should really hear Mick's solo album for Hydrahead called ANNWN. The project (him solo) is Ocrilim. It's even more ambient... but in a different way. Love that guy.

looooooove this album, though I do agree with the endurance test aspect (which I don't think applies in the least to fantomas, who are a constant joy). its uber-repetitive to the point of insanity, which makes it both deeply involving and highly irritating. it's like having a swarm of bees trapped in your skull.

m the g, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

Fantomas, admittedly, varies in this regard. I think I sat through Delirium Cordia once. I think I sat through Suspended Animation once. I think I tried to sit through Director's Cut once. All have brilliance within, and plenty of it, but packaged uncompromisingly-to-downright-confrontationally.

OV was kinda soothing, as if the bees were making wondrous calming geometric patterns

Yeah, I still break this one out once every 6 months or so. What a great chunk of music.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

I got into Orthrelm with the first white e.p. on Tolotta and was fortunate to see them live soon after. Also set up a show for them and Zombi on the OV tour. Mick broke a string about 12 minutes into OV and just started the whole thing over. So awesome.

The one time I saw Fantomas was an exercise in tedium.
