Tape Tree, Anyone?

Alright dudes, it's spring and I'm putting away my sleepwalking winter albums. Anybody up for starting a tape/cd tree? I'd like to gauge interest then possibly move it onto a mailing list. In the past I was part of one where 10 people made one mix a month, according to theme or not, then sent it out to the rest of the group, getting 9 new mixes in return. I loved hearing what people were listening to all around the country & world. It's seriously lovely for the inquisitive and insatiable among us who are also somewhat poor.

Interested parties please e-mail me, I'm at work and am gonna try to ignore this board for a few hours. Thanks!

I think I'm the only person here who would be up for making/listening to cassettes and the record button on my tapedeck broke a few weeks ago :(

What themes do you have in mind?

Lingbertt, Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

you know, easy stuff for starters like seasonal mixes, mixes for sleeping/driving/fucking/dancing, favorite old songs, favorite of-the-moment songs, favorites of all time, etc. lately i'm a bit obsessed with favorite songs + songs they're sampled from..i keep getting hit with revelations lately (particularly in the case of massive attack), now that i'm finally listening to funk.

super obscure mixes or ones that tell a riddle or whatever could come later from discussion. i wouldn't want to dictate each theme, i'm open to anything. this seems like a great forum to find people to trade with, as tastes are so diverse i don't forsee ending up with 9 identical mixes.

i'm all for tapes if people are willing to put in the work, if we really want to get digital we could just get a gmail account and email in mixes . . . but that doesn't seem like as much fun . . . either way i'm interested. how about a solid mix to kick off the summer?

I have tape making capabilities but more importantly I think the idea is a great one. Count me in if you get it going!

right on right on, i'll send out an e-mail when there's a couple more people! so do you think we should just do CDs as its a medium b/w tape and mp3? and i suppose, the easiest method--or shall we be tape purists? it doesn't matter to me, weigh in

I'm in, I think. Either tape or CD is fine. (I'm not sure that I can do once a month though.)

I'm tempted ... but sending things to / from Brazil is a bit pricier than normal. Also my tape recorder is totally crap. CDRs would be better.

In fact, being cheap, I'd prefer to do it online via Gmail or sticking stuff on a webserver.

in the interest of being inclusive, how do you all feel about having the individual choose which one they want to use, and getting either/or? is everyone at least able to play tapes?

Rachel S (rachels), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I prefer cds, if for no other reason than I can play them in my car. I'm pretty sure I can play tapes in my apartment, though. I got an old tape deck like 6 months ago and hooked it up to my receiver, but I have yet to actually play any cassettes on it, so I don't know if it actually works. I don't know if I can actually record cassettes at my apartment, but I should be able to use one of the boomboxes at my job.

i'll just say i'm craving tapes right now. just got my first mixtape in years the other week, and having a bunch more (that i haven't been listening to for years) would be really neat, but music is music, so if people want to choose their own format that would be alright . . .
