Man, he was only 58. One of the greatest jazz upright bassists.

If you're unfamiliar, check out his album 'The Eternal Traveller' (1984), particularly the track "En Elefan Kom Marcherende." His bass sings like a fretless. He and Eberhard Weber are unmatched, in my opinion.

I always enjoyed his Dancing on the Tables album from the late 70's featuring a young John Scofield. And the Chops record with Joe Pass (which I bought on vinyl for $1) is fun, too.

And he was the true hero of seventies BBC jazz shows. 'And on bass, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen'. I'd entirely forgotten his name. RIP.
