Great newer bands from Mpls/St.Paul

STNNNG (pronounced Stunning) (marries current noise scene stuff to classic punk druve and actual songs, with great spoken word rants on top): http://www.stnnng.com/

The Belles of Skin City (great and hard to describe...The Fall fronted by hillbilly preacher): http://www.angelfire.com/band2/belles/ (not much on site really)

Thunder in the Valley (like glammed up old tyme music): http://www.walkingdead.net/~titv/news.html

The Blind Shake (classic Am Rep stylee): http://www.theblindshake.com/home.htm

Sicbay (not that new, great post punk from dude that was there ex Collosamite, Dazzling Killmen): http://www.sicbay.com/

The Divebomb Honey (great keyboard/guit new wave, think old B52s): http://home.myspace.com/thedivebombhoney

HAND (late polvo meets horns and keyboards, art torch songs): http://home.myspace.com/hand

YES to the STNNNG. hot shit and a good fucking show.

also, Malachi Constant. google for website.

otherwise drawing a blank right now, not sure why...

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Friday, 22 April 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Malachi Constant, Maps of Norway, VR9Rd (or whatever the hell their name is), Housebreaker (recently RIP), Signal to Trust (also recently RIP), 10W40 (in a state of semi-perpetual hiatus). Impaler and Kruddler simply due to their unflagging ability to stay alive.

In Memorium: Helva (long gone, I guess)

More when I have the time to remember.

Maps of Norway

damn, thanks dude! : )

VR9Rd (or whatever the hell their name is)

sadly, they will be calling it a day at the end of the summer...

Signal to Trust (also recently RIP)

Happily, they are going to be playing again soon, with a new drummer....

No problem M@tt. Assume you're in the band then? Well done and refreshing...

Flaked on Falcon Crest and Askeleton. Also good.

John Justen (johnjusten), Friday, 22 April 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Someone tell me about Helva. I never heard them and I might be taking lessons from their former guitarist.

box.of.rox, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Noise Quean Ant is awesome. Amazing live band. Always different

Ova!..um....they're somehow a little too "guitar center" for me...rote mechanical technique, like yngwie malmsteen for noize boyz.

Seawhores are an amazing noise band too. Now ex-Cows dude is drumming for them.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Ooh! Also:

Build My Gallows High - like if GSYBE! were working class Touch n' Go toughs and not Candian hippies.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

-Happy Apple and all the other Dave King projects (of which Halloween Alaska is one, correct?

-Dr. Mambo's Combo!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

RE: tell me about Helva.

Really a great band, perhaps hobbled a bit by the fact that they were constantly dabbling in outside influences like reggae/dancehall/big band and got pigeonholed as a ska band, which really wasn't at all indicative of the scope of the influences involved.

Which guitarist are you taking lessons from (Shane or Nate)? Both are phenomenal players and great guys, but I can tell you more if I know who you're talking about.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
HAY GUYS

I think the Future are pretty good!

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is pretty old...needs a mention of vampire hands.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Celestiial. The Desolate North cd is outstanding atmospheric doom metal.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

hmm never heard of them, where do they play usually?

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

well i reviewed them somewhat hastily (CP next week i think) and ended up making a bigger deal about their Stooges-ness than anything. they're not nearly crazy enough to merit a JL comparison, i didn't even think of it!
