Get the cement shoes ready.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I would love to go to this.

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd go if I could.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

So it's BJM and a whole bunch of other groups, then.

brianiac (briania), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

There's not one band on that list I'd pay a dollar to see.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

jeesh, at least the Warped tour has got Gogol Bordello. XD

janni (janni), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah, there isn't a single band on that list I'd pay money to see.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

THERE IS A BAND NAMED AFTER AN REM SONG FOR GOD'S SAKE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

That said there *are* a number of bands on there I'd enjoy. But they make up approx. 10% of the list.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

no quality control, too many rubbish & medicore trad songs rock bands.

The festival needs a new name: LollyPopoutoftouchloser Festival

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

If there's a worse band name in the World than World Leader Pretend, I don't wanna know about it.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Does Liz Phair play her old stuff mixed in with her new stuff?

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe I'm just old - I probably woulda gone to see the Morrisey/Sonic Youth one if that hadn't fallen through... but where is the crazy psych rock, the freak-folk, the hip-hop (MF Doom and Ghostface were too busy??), etc. I can think of plenty of "young" bands I'd like to see at the moment, they just aren't on that list.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I hear Disturbance At The Heron-House suck balls.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Denmark's Roskilde Festival has a far superior line up:
http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/object.php?obj=88000c&code=1

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Dungen AND Duran Duran! awesome.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

and ...Enslaved and Isis

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Bands I'd at least like to see once out of curiosity on that list:

pixies+
dinosaur jr+
the arcade fire
blonde redhead+
the black keys+
the walkmen+
z-trip
los amigos invisibles
m83+
vhs or beta
brian jonestown massacre*+
the warlocks

*Did anyone notice that the Dandys and BJM were both on the bill! Super Dig! drama possibilities!!!

+denotes higher level of interest...esp. Blonde Redhead who are amazing.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly, World Leader Pretend is a horrible band name, but their EP is worth hearing.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Near Wild Heaven are so much better.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

the Shiny Happy People do a great cover of "Take Your Mama Out"

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Nah, it's all about 7 Chinese Brothers. (They're not really Chinese, and there's only 4 of them).

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

World Leader Pretend vs. Pretty Girls Make Graves

..vs. Eric's Trip?

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather rip my own nuts off and eat them than see ANY band on that list!!!

(Do I win?)

Justin, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

P.S.: If Lightnin' Hopkins showed up, you'd all be PWN3D!

Justin, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I thought after last year's version fell apart, they were vowing to make any future event more diverse musically-- I guess not.

steve-k, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Digable Planets, huh? Didn't know they were still going. As they made my all time favourite 30 seconds of rap evah, I'd probably fork out something to see them if they were in my town.

Are they any good these days?

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

its a reunion thing - they broke up after Blowout Comb. I wouldn't hold your breath for a great live hip-hop show (that rarest of beasts)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Looks like a yawning festival.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

THERE IS A BAND NAMED AFTER AN REM SONG FOR GOD'S SAKE

AND IT'S NOT A PERFECT CIRCLE!!!

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

hello 1993

a banana (alanbanana), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Ha. I was just about to post:

I actually don't think the line-up is so awful. I mean if I got a free ticket, I'd go. What's more striking is that it sounds like bobopalooza -- all the headliners were either at their peak at least 10 years ago or are safe enough for that same *aging* fan base.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Mascis prob'ly thinks it is 1993.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

can it be pinpointed at exactly what point Lollapalooza jumped the shark? I def. have great memories from several shows, and it did seem to spark a resurgence in festivals and had its heart in the right place w/its "variety" of bands and various sideshows ethic....

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

"Mountain Song" by Jane's Addiction -- now being used in an ad for Coors.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Why do music festivals suck so much nowadays? Y'know, Glastonbury used to be good!

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, it seems geared just as much towards the lil' Myspace indie kids as it is towards senior citizens like myself....lots of those bands are fairly new.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

how old is it, anyway.... 12 years?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I went from 1991 to 1994 -- 1993 was actually probably the moment it jumped, partially due to the ridiculous conditions the LA date was held in, though the performances were all right, especially on the side stage. The fact that I got a promo thing in early 1994 already trumpeting 'the return of Perry Farrell' as the overall organizer is telling, they were already living on past glories as such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Looks like a yawning festival.

Time to get all excited, then.

/stevemartin

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I think it was the Alice in Chain/Primus year that it jumped the shark.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Like I said, 1993. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

What's the deal with this "Bonaroo" festival?

Last summer, when my band was on its way to a show somewhere in that area, we stopped at a gas station very close to the exit for Bonaroo. Our singer was standing outside, and this filthy hippie girl comes up to him and says, "Do you know how to get there?" and he says, "Get where?" and she says, "You know, there" and our singer says, totally deadpan, "Well, maybe we're already there."

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

hahaha! excellent answer.

the last year I went was when Smashing Pumpkins were the headliners - they were by far the worst set of the day too, tho I saw a lot of other great stuff that year (ie, Stereolab in their prime!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

1994 was the best year: Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave, L7, George Clinton, Breeders, The Verve, The Flaming Lips, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins (who spent their set sneering and making fun of the audience for being from the same state as Ted Nugent). The oddest part was witnessing Nick Cave play to an empty venue at 3 in the afternoon under blinding sunlight.

I'd be interested to know if anyone saw Mercury Rev in 1993 before they got kicked off the tour. Must've been a spectacle..

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

geez, were the Pumpkins like that the whole tour? that show turned me off them forever, such insufferable assholes.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I still stand by some of their records, but SP were awful both times I saw them live - mostly due to Sr. Corgan's flagrant condescension to the audience. The lowest point had to have been at L when he actually played a few bars of "Rhinoceros" just to TAUNT the people who genuinely wanted to hear it.

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine met Billy Corgan during a Lollapalooza stop. Corgan referred to bandmates as "my puppets". My friend called Corgan an asshole to his face and left, tour rider beer in hand.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

If there's a worse band name in the World than World Leader Pretend, I don't wanna know about it.

There's a band on that same list called Sound Tribe Sector 9!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

"and many more..." might be the best band

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Chicago's the Corny Indie Capital of the World, or what?!

efil4zelffor (deangulberry), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

It's really Caucasiapalooza too, isn't it?

God, adding -palooza to things is getting almost as bad as adding -gate to things to make them sound like scandals.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

I never got to go to Lollapalooza. Guess I won't be planning to catch up - the only band I like there (aside from the Pixies who everyone likes of course) is Blonde Redhead, but I've seen them play a couple times already.

Nick Cave didn't play any shows at all in the US for what, five years after that?

Some friends of mine saw the, what was it, 1995 with Sonic Youth and Hole, but Hole only got through twenty or so minutes of the set before Courtney quit, as someone apparently threw a shell casing on stage.

Maybe it'll be really hot and that Bravery guy's hair will melt.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 23 April 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Dinosaur Jr??

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Saturday, 23 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Nick Cave was great that year on Lollapalooza! And the Smashing Pumpkins sucked ass, even in Chicago. Home town advantage, right: they had to contend with following the Beastie Boys at their hip peak. But een L7 was good, IIRC.

I kind of wish I saw the testosteronapalooza year, with JAMC, Lush, Ice Cube and then Ministry, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and - who else, Red Hot Chili Peppers? Rage Against the Machine?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 23 April 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

josh...i saw that one. the bands played in exactly the wrong order. everyone was eating hotdogs and wandering around during the JAMC and Lush sets. when it finally got nice and dark out the Chili Peppers marched onstage with these totally lame flaming helmets.

'94 was also the year of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. I'll never forget watching some joker from the audience drink bile pumped from one of the performers. now that was quality entertainment.

mono.mono (mono.mono), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

Sure, I'll go to this. I mean, I wouldn't travel for it, but as long as it's happening in my city, I'll happily see the Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, The Arcade Fire, Digable Planets, Blonde Redhead, M83, The Changes, The Killers ... as long as tickets are under, say, $40.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 23 April 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

This looks like the best rock/ metal festival line up of 2005:

Fury Festival in France
http://digbig.com/4dfkc

This is a Phil Freeman type festival !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 23 April 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

you know, its like that scene in "xanadu" where the 1940's meet the 1980's -- except that lollapalooza's lineup is 1980's meet the 1990's.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 23 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

can it be pinpointed at exactly what point Lollapalooza jumped the shark?

I would've said when Metallica headlined; the festival did one more year after that and flamed out, never to recover.

1994 was the best year

You left the Boredoms off yr list.

The only one I went to was 1995; it had Sonic Youth, the Jesus Lizard, Pavement, Moby, Laika, Geraldine Fibbers, the Pharcyde and others. It was aboot as much fun as you could hope to have in the Toronto area.

Vic Funk, Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I will avoiding this like the plauge. The mere idea of large multi-stage corporate sponsored outdoor events just makes me furious.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Mascis prob'ly thinks it is 1993.

J MASCIS CAN BE LOST IN WHATEVER YEAR HE WANTS.

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 April 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

i dont think its that bad.its a bit 90s. but it looks ok?
