I need to make a mix for an MFA graduation party.
I need your help.
What would you put on it?
I'm thinking of lots of songs with, you know "master" in the title....

Do you want the songs to be good, or just appropriate? The Decemberists' "Song for Myla Goldberg" gives you an MFA holder (and brother of a published MFA-holder) singing a song about a current MFA-program professor, which is as up the MFA ass as I can think of. (The funny part is that Myla is evidently not so much of a fan.)

(Better still, MFA holder singing a song about the MFA prof who blurbed his MFA sister's book!)

For some reason I've just assumed you're talking about writers here, and not film or visual arts or theater MFAs. If so, there are loads of songs about writers, in kind of the same way there are loads of novels about painters.

Momus - "Jeff Koons"
Unrest - "Isobel" (Bishop)
Modern Lovers - "Pablo Picasso"
The Futureheads - "Man Ray"
The Jam - "Art School"

and, of course
Pete Brown & Piblokto! - "Things May Come and Things May Go, But the Art School Dance Goes On Forever"

Oh god, if it's visual artists: "Modern Art" by Art Brut!

Xpost:

Preferably both good and appropriate, but I'd take just the latter (they're going in a goodie bag; the party music will be MIA and the Free Design and maybe just the new Missy over and over). I'm putting a few songs that just say Master! Master! Master! for giggles, like the Fall's "Bingo Master"? And Gong's "Master Builder"?

But oh, that Jam song will work. And I should have been more specific--it's a writing MFA. Shows what I learned.

As the MFA, I wish I could play that. I think the bookworms in the room would just be like, What's that buzzing? Are your speakers broken? Are we listening to a fog machine?

Specials : Rat Race : "I've got one Art O-level. It did nothing for me"

I want a copy! I'm not handing in a thesis until August, though, so you'll have to confer it then.

Maybe a song or two about going on welfare to prepare them for their future.
