How about the connection between polka and ska...for example, I've heard Mouse on Mars' "Yippie" referred to as both.

Mark, I've never thought of the connection between the polka rhythm and ska, but now that you mention it, it seems pretty clear. Ska has always seemed to me like a really good sound and rhythm which somehow has never been used in a way that lives up to its potential. (Maybe I've listened to the wrong bands. I haven't heard many of the bands from the last ska revival, but what I have heard didn't sound inviting.)

I like dancing the polka, but know nothing about the music.

It's no coincidence - polka was an influence on ska. Polka, I like polka, but I don't play it at home unless it's on the radio - it's best heard / danced to live, with a bunch of old Polish people. I prefer ironic polka. I like Brave Combo - they play polkas, along with a bunch of other stuff.
