I'm gonna have to think about it. So many to choose from. Pre-M.M. Doobies or post? Hmmmm....

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

i mean ya got long train runnin' on the one hand...

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

"what a fool believes"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Scott is right. "Long Train Running," for the bassline alone.

xhuxk, Friday, 22 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

(okay, also for seeing miss lucy down around the tracks, and she lost her home and her family and she won't be coming back, i guess....)

xhuxk, Friday, 22 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I might definitely have to pick long train runnin'. they all sound so good on the car radio though. i heard black water a couple months ago in the car and i almost started crying like a baby. what can i say, i'm a 70's kid.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Even though it's a cover, "Jesus Is Just Alright" with me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

"Ukaiah"

steve hise, Friday, 22 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I have a huge soft spot for another cover of theirs: "Take Me in Your Arms." A rilly great L.A. pop stab at the Motown song.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I've always loved "Long Train Runnin'," but if I have to pick only one, it'll be "Another Park, Another Sunday."

Betting this scans 8:1 in favor of pre-Michael-McDonald tracks.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 22 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Pre-M.M. "Black Water"

M.M. era - "Real Love"

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Friday, 22 April 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

"Takin' it To the Street".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 22 April 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Dave Vinson (Gaughin), Saturday, 23 April 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll pass.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Scratch that. I'll take the song that they play on The Simpsons when Homer takes Mr. Burns' yacht into International Waters and the guy from the Coast Guard says, "But we only want to party."

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm torn between China Grove and It Keeps You Runnin' so I'll choose For Someone Special

Minute By Minute

mucho, Saturday, 23 April 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why, but I'll take "what a fool believes".

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I forgot about "It Keeps You Runnin'". I'm sticking with "Takin' it To the Street", though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

"Black Water"

Keith C (kcraw916), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

"Long Train Runnin'" deserves to be their theme song - especially since as a youngster, I thought they were singing "Well now look/We're the Doobies now!"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 23 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Southern Cross

leslie (leslie), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

"It Keeps You Runnin" is the one.

happy fun ball (kenan), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

"What a Fool Believes" easy

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

HYSTERICS.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

I hate to say it....but could it be that the Doobies actually had a fair amount of decent songs?

I must be losing my mind. Time to go listen to some Venom and jab myself in the trachea with a rusty fork.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

I literally grew up on the Doobies best of, there are very few songs that are burned into my brain more indelibly than theirs. the Doobies fucking rule.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Song to See You Through

Scott CE (Scott CE), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

Rockin Down The Highway, good driving tune.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 23 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I like "Another Park, Another Sunday," for some reason. I don't mind "Takin' It to the Streets," as far as their Steely Dan period goes.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

"Listen to the Music". What can I say, it's one of those songs I'll stop everything and listen to if it comes on the radio.

Vic Funk, Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

A song that I used to hate with great exuberance, but must begrudgingly tip the hat to... "What A Fool Believes"

I still don't understand a fucking thing he sings in it, but that verse lead melody is just killer.

seven years pass...

A bit on the side of the thread, but it's been 7 years, so I don't care. How the hell did Led Zep get away with Trampled Under Foot? It basically is Long Train Coming, as you guys are of course well aware. I've never found any info on those two songs. I mean, the Doobies must have been big enough to sue, right?

Mule, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sure that manager with the baseball bat had a word with Doobie Freres and worked it out.

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

Valid point. But still.. It's just too obvious. Both songs are great though, so it's not really a problem. I just wondered if there was any story on them.

Mule, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

Really surprised Kid Rock hasn't done a mash-up of these two songs.

henry s, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

My One is Takin' It to the Streets!

Early: "South City Midnight Lady"
Late: "What a Fool Believes"

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 15 February 2021 02:13 (five years ago)

my pre-McDonald era fave is "another park, another Sunday", but i mostly only know what would get played on the radio

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Monday, 15 February 2021 02:32 (five years ago)

I'm not really a Doobies fan but I like "What a Fool Believes." Great single.

birdistheword, Monday, 15 February 2021 02:55 (five years ago)

Listen To The Music - hella groovy, super joyful

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 February 2021 03:35 (five years ago)

It's absolutely What a Fool Believes - few bands that have walked the earth can claim a song that good

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 15 February 2021 03:36 (five years ago)

Sticking outside their big singles, "I Cheat the Hangman" is a favorite of mine. That tune has a bit of everything in it, it is probably as close to prog/krautrock as the Doobie Brothers ever got and it's got some top harmony singing on it too.

earlnash, Monday, 15 February 2021 05:24 (five years ago)

My favorite non-hit is probably You're Made That Way

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 15 February 2021 05:35 (five years ago)

1. China Grove, which at 14 is where I decided "this is what they mean by 'riff rock'." (Riff rock runners up: Every other Tom Johnston song.)

Honorable Mention. Without You, which at 14 is where I decided "this is what they mean by 'a rave up'."

Hideous Lump, Monday, 15 February 2021 06:36 (five years ago)

two years pass...

ok i did a deep doobie dive last week and my answer is "Losin' End" off Taking it to the Streets

Heez, Monday, 10 July 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

"What a Fool Believes," by a nose over "Long Train Running." It's a coin toss for me, though.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 10 July 2023 21:21 (two years ago)

old black water, keep on rolling
mississippi moon won't you keep on shining on me
yeah keep on shining your light

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 10 July 2023 21:24 (two years ago)

"Keeps You Running" has the best bassline.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 10 July 2023 21:25 (two years ago)

Poll: “What A Fool Believes” vs. the Spinners’ “Working My Way Back To You” vs. Pablo Cruise’s “Love Will Find A Way” vs. Robbie Dupre’s “Steal Away.”

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 10 July 2023 21:34 (two years ago)

i put "mamaloi" on a summer mix recently. pretty awesome.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 11 July 2023 00:42 (two years ago)

ok i did a deep doobie dive last week and my answer is "Losin' End" off Taking it to the Streets

I came to the conclusion that I'm not really a fan after doing a deep dive a few years back, but "Losin' End" was the one non-single album cut that stood out for me. (I think McDonald re-recorded it as a single years later.)

"What a Fool Believes" is the only track I really play anymore.
