..by either World Domination Enterprises (the original) or Meat Beat Manifesto (the cover),....it don't matter.

The original is an ear-raping, tinnitus-courting skronk masterpiece. As if it could ever be improved, the cover adds a hip-swaying dollop of funk with ominious industrial whatsis and scratchy hip hop flourishes.

Both make me so goddamn happy to be alive. If you disagreee, you're a foul-smelling parasite with a fondness of deviant and degrading sexual practices that aren't even interesting.

(going to have to track down the original version, haven't heard it)

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 23 April 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I was humming this to myself only today while making a nice cup of tea, thinking 'must dig that out'.

snotty moore, Saturday, 23 April 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Yes indeed, the original is wonderful. The cover is okay I guess, didn't make much of an impression on me, not that I have anything at all against MBM. I'll see if I can dig it out of my gigantic box of tapes here in a sec. I'm on a Cabaret Voltaire trip at the moment, and MBM seems like a nice thing to transition into from them, so what the hell.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 April 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC. The guitar sound on the WDP original is amazing, like Andy Gill's from Gang Of Four but taken up a few notches.

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

theres an even earlier version, by the band that was a precursor to WDE called the 012 on their LP "Lets Get Professional" - its roughly the same but at about half the speed.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Wow - really? I've got some O12 tracks, didn't like 'em much. Did it have the same title this song by 012? I'll have to look that up.

Played the MBM version...still didn't leave an impression. I guess it's a case of "the first version you heard usually remains your favourite".

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

i actually have only heard the meat beat version, which i totally love. can anyone YSI the original?

rajeev (rajeev), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I heard the MBM version first (and I must confess, assumed it was an original). I quite like lots of their other stuff (notably earlier stuff like "Dog Star Man").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I wish Mark Grout was on right now cause he knows lots about W.D.E. - I have unanswered questions. For example, I have just satisfied my curiosity regarding a question that had lingered in my mind since Alex mentioned them, namely: "Is 'Let's Play Domination' available on CD?" Well, as I suspected, the answer is no, sadly. The only CD I see available is something called "Twintone", released in 2001. But I don't recognize any of the tracks on it and the clips I hear on amazon sound really modern i.e. perhaps remixes??! Please explain.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

WDP version

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

It pains my heart to think that people unlucky enough to lack turntables will let "Let's Play Domination" slip by them. Just because you can't get it on CD, it will slip through the cracks of time and no one will care. CHRIST that is depressing.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

thanks haitch!

rajeev (rajeev), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Is 'Let's Play Domination' available on CD?"

I have had zero luck finding it if it is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Was it Jah Jah Call You that had the biggest fuckoffest bass/beat blast ever? That whole album makes LCD SOundsystem sound as fresh and vital as a gang-banged rectum really don't it? And as for MBM - does anyone remember the Consolidated remix of Edge Of Control? Fuck me - up there with Young Gods 'GasolineManRemix' and The Skatenigs 'Loudspeaker' as prime dancefloor fodder of the early 90s.
Alex, as ever, you take me back to a warm place.

Neil Kulkarni, Sunday, 24 April 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

hat whole album makes LCD SOundsystem sound as fresh and vital as a gang-banged rectum

Hahahahaha....YEAH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Hi guys!

Yes, "Let's play domination" is so available on CD, although the next album "Love from Lead City" is not. (That's remixes/dubs, and 1 side of live stuff).

Look for Caroline records in the US, and Product Inc in the UK.

The 012 album "Let's get professional" is well worth searching for, it has proto versions of "ALA" as well as "Funky Town" and "Three Little Birds". If you've heared "Beat baby hi" on the b-side of ALA 7", it's mostly like that.

I have a CD that a very kind person traded me with all the 012 stuff from their "Fuck off records" days. Basically, you can hear how they started from, but I would not recommend if you are lookingfor an easy listen.

I have an out-of-date fan page (only just got my my webpage supplier password back!) but this might well help.

(I never bought live tapes ofworld dom at Camden Market et al, as we were always going to see them again. Until they 'split' i.e. went missing and said nowt. So, if anyone has live tapes....)

Heheh, I like this line for some reason. :-) Rah to Neil, as always! MBM are actually playing in June in LA -- friend's going and I think I might have to tag along, just to see what Jack's up to. Said remix was pretty good, I seem to recall.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

thee most underrated band of the 80's? if they had existed three years earlier, i feel their profile would be so much higher. 'a.l.a.' must be one of the best debut 7"s ever. i had the good fortune to see wde play many, many times in the late 80's and reckon the records don't quite capture the magic. 'jah jah call you' live in particular just made you want to go and fuck there and then. magical.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

The MBM version is by MBM which means it is perfect by definition. (The original is a fantastic lovely monster as well.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Well, Let's Play Domination may have existed on CD at one time, but it sure seems impossible to find now. Going to Caroline's website didn't turn up anything.

As for that Twintone thing, I'm gonna guess that was a different band/artist entirely than the one we speak of here.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

yeh, Twintone is an artist who released a CD called World Domination Enterprises.
the tricky trickster.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I'd also like to -- once again -- recommend the MBM/Orb collaboration, Battersea Shield. Not only does it (a) rock and (b) come to you via estimable Brit label Malicious Damage (erstwhile home of Killing Joke), but it comes in a cool, shiny Metal Box style...er...metal box.

Here's an early thread I star someone named Brian started in early 2002:

World Domination Enterprises & Terminal Cheesecake : c/d?

OK, should state, as someone who knows him did on a thread last year, Keith did not die.
