this was done last year but as record releases are now being ramped up after the winter doledrums what are the most anxiously awaited records?

WEEZER!!!!!!!!

JM, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weezer, oh yes yes.

Josh, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duh, Weezer.

Otis Wheeler, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WEEZ- no, wait.

fred solinger, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MBV, of course. *sits down beside dusty chart, sighs, looks up mournfully at it, hears joints creak as another days gets marked off, settles back into somnolescence*

If I had to be vaguely serious, Windy and Carl's imminent album and, hopefully, long-overdue singles comp are candidates, as is the new Melvins and Nick Cave. Rock. Assuming all is on track and it *will* be released this year as planned, though, the Chameleons' full reunion album is very, *very* high on my list of expectations. But I'm guessing the album I'll end up liking the most is the one I haven't heard anything about from the group that's new to me. Which, ergo, would not be Weezer. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Belle & Sebastian and Clientele eps, of course. and last but not least - April Dreams England (cos it'll happen if you will it?).

youn noh, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wilco, weezer, and primal scream

ernest, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Primal Scream? Are we expecting a release? That would of course be the most anticipated release of the summer. Oh and the new Basement Jaxx.

Omar, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The new Of Montreal: Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse! Should be a classic! I have no idea of any other records coming out at the moment, I'm so out of the loop!

jel, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

um, daft punk. is that out today?

autechre. that rephlex compilation. new bogdan raczynski album (i know it will sound exactly like the others. i don't care)

gareth, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Picking up from The Clientele, another Track & Field signing, LA's The Tyde, release 'Once' on March 6 (and will gig with The Clientele in Brighton soon). They're half of blissed-out Canyon Rock revivalists Beachwood Sparks with a vague indie-pop edge bolted on...mmm, nice...

Cotton Mather's follow-up to the majestic 'Kontiki' - the band are currently cherry-picking from the disorderly queue of labels wanting to put it out...

Centro-Matic's 5th album in 3 years, 'Distance and Clime', due early summer...

Dismemberment Plan have mustered an EP due anytime...

stephen mcentee, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kinks - 'BBC Sessions'. Chills - new box set. Something substantial from Kraftwerk would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. The 23 Skidoo re-issues, if they ever happen.

I heard or read something about a new series of re-issues of the Rolling Stones 60's albums with the correct track listings (UK) and better remastering.

There's supposed to be a New order album this year isn't there? Can't say I'm that bothered about it, but will undoubtedly get it sooner or later.

Dr. C, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...and Cotton Mather. 'Kon-Tiki' is wonderful.

Dr. C, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm fairly keen to hear hope sandoval's stuff. aside from that, i can't actually bring to mind any bands. at all. quite sad, really, that i should care so little about new stuff.

alix, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good question, listed are some suggested upcoming listening solutions for 2001

Top of the anticipation list

Tool - Lateralus - Due May 15th - this is going to blow my mind epic and expansive trip into epic dark rock. 1996 was the last album, 5 years wait! the bastard record company put it back to May from April - so the anticipation is burning!

and The Chameleons - due june. The album has been recorded now been mixed same producer as Strange Times album apparently. Epic, expansive rock - essential first day release! and those cunts at NME will ignore them ! They deserve front cover status the NME has not even reported they are back, the stupid editor Ben Knowles an Oxford educated toff whose pesonal history of indie music probably starts with the baggy era I bet the clueless twat has never heard The Chameleons!

The new Silo album out this week, Alloy. - compared to Godspeed and Trans Am

New albums by Elizabeth Fraser and also Faultline (you will know if you have experienced the sublime debut colder closer - live instrumentation over industrial, breakbeat, techno, and a twist of offkilter jungle - then you will be gagging for the new album ) both newly signed to Blanco Y Negro. Also another ex Cocteau Twin robin guthrie has a new band Violet Indiana that are sublime, on the Bella Union label out April 2nd

the Swans inspired Beyond Dawn on peaceville label is due sometime Spring. Also released last week the new Album featuring M.gira ex Swans, Angel of Light sounds interesting from the audio clips

Ashfelt album on Iris Light label in May - distorted jungle meets cut up 23 skidoo/early cabaret Voltaire

the new Funk D'Void - tech house album Dos(Soma label) - out next week, March 19th as is Mice Parade whose improvised music is stunning

Orbital new album is out in April 16th as the album in the UK anyway The Avalanches. MR C on the tech house tip new album in the summer.

in the post rock vein new albums by Appliance, Mogwai, Windy & Carl, Longstone and Bardo Pond.

in extreme metal watch out for Sirius and Ulver.

Roland Orzabal new album is another that is worth watching out, remember him in Tears For Fears he has gone in an experimental direction this new album mixes trip hop, techno and jungle as well as guitar music, if you like Doves then check it out. March 26th UK release.

while Katatonia from Sweden offer a new album in the dark atmospheric rock vein on March 26th taking inspiration from Red House Painters,Jeff Buckley as well as dark metal.. also Red House Painters have a new album out April 16th

Bows - ex Long Fin Killie chap Luke Sutherland from Scotland have a new album out on Too Pure

industrial watch out for new albums by Assemblage 23, Flesh Field, and Gridlock.

Martian:

"an Oxford educated toff"

*sigh* this forum has been free from Class War rhetoric for seven months; I guess it had to happen in the end.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bows. cloudboy(i said this last year but supposedly it is definitely out at the end of this month). rocketship(wishful thinking). neil halstead solo record. of montreal. ladybug transistor. pearlfishers. bristols. honeyrider. more screenprints records. shermans. squires of the subterrain. super furry animals. gorkys. trembling blue stars. stereo total. siddelys resissue. graeme downes solo record. beaumont. omd tribute cd(brittle stars do a lovely 'souvenir').

so much sissy pop.

the ladytron record is excellent and great fun.

keith, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Megadeth is back on track with a back to basics full out speed metal album. Mustaine says he has abandoned all the shit they tried with Risk and Cryptic Writings and said this album is basically Rust in Peace II. A must have for the month of March

Luptune Pitman, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First and foremost (in terms of imminent purchase) the new Daft Punk and Eve albums. Also Basement Jaxx, Orbital, The Chameleons, Depeche Mode, Missy Elliot, N.E.R.D., Timbaland, Kelis, Aaliyah, Mogwai and heaps more that I probably can't remember right now. Surely there'll be a new album from The Church soon?

Tim, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah I listened to the Ladytron record in the shops, pretty good, bit clever maybe (I mean a track named 'CSKA Sofia', really!). Might buy it today as an companion piece to Discovery. Also looking forward to new releases of Stereo Mc's (end of May), Air (same) and Ursula Rucker's "Supersister" (somewhere in June).

Omar, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As an Oxford-educated toff who got into indie music with baggy (sort of) I say to Robin: there's no need to be so sensitive.

It's lucky that taste is a dead and outmoded concept though, or I'd be very concerned at Martian's mention of Roland Orzabal.

I'm not looking forward to anything, really. I'll hear what I hear.

Tom, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gotta be the foetus stuff that supposed to be released this year. and for those pop moments .. gorillaz. dont go by the 2 step version of client eastwood - hear the original for those dubbed up vibes. lp should be excellent by all accounts. thankyou. www.ireallylovemusic.co.uk

mark emsley, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was gonna say the Ladytron album too, but it seems to have alot of previously available songs on it! They probably have a song called "CSKA Sofia" so that John Peel will play it, he likes football themed songs!

jel, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, I think we established before that I'm more ideological than you on issues like this; I personally think that class-conscious pop writing is an oxymoron, and anyone who disagrees shouldn't be reading FT, let alone contributing to ILM. But then I've never really got over my "classless utopian" idea of pop, formed as a revolutionary mid-teen in the depths of the Major era.

Doesn't that Orzabal album sound fucking *atrocious*?

Robin, who actually secretly responds instinctively to the "I hope we live to tell the tale ..." in "Shout".

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay Robin, I'll bite. Why is class-conscious pop writing wrong and why do people who think otherwise have no business on this board ? I suspect there's some fetishized ideal of pop behind this.

Patrick, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Patrick and Robin - I too am very interested in the answer to this but I'm going to start a new thread since this has got to 40+ messages anyway. Cheers!
