Other than the Prefuse album, I can't come up with anything. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.

Guero

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Mu - Out of Breach

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Trail of Dead. Not that I expected much, but jeez.

Shawn Arm, Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Shawn Arm OTM

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 24 April 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Human After All was the first album that came to mind -- it's not only the most disappointing release thus far in the calendar year but it's one of the worst, too.

AntoninScaliaLovesYou, Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

George Delgado: Mi Ritmo Llego

As I've said elsewhere, I'm pretty unhappy with what I'm hearing from everyone involved with the current NYC salsa dura mafia.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I'll second Trail of Dead, and raise you a Hot Hot Heat....Mu, wtf? Maybe not as good as the first, but still vastly impressive

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Quasimoto, definitely. probably Busdriver, too.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

DAFT PUNK
M.I.A. (though it's hard to be disappointed when not all that enthused in the first place)

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

At this point Daft Punk is a "Was it all a dream?" kind of record. I see reference to it & think, "Oh yeah, they released that boring record this year." And it was what, a few weeks ago? It was so dull it never made its way to my long-term memory.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Given I haven't heard an album released in 2005 other than Low's 'The Great Destroyer,' that I can recall, I guess that one would have to be it. But it wasn't a huge disappointment, just a bump in the road (hopefully).

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Daft Punk is one.
Arular is the other--I loved Piracy Funds Terrorism, Arular just sounds boring in comparison.

Basically every record Low has released since "The Curtain Hits the Cast" has been a bump in the road for me.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

hello, LCD Soundsystem!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

its harder to list the albums that haven't disappointed

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I loved that Low record.. kind of renewed my interest in the band after having burned out on the whole slowcore thing.

But Daft Punk, indeed! I listened to some of that in a shop yesterday and was left thinking, there's no way they could have been serious. There's not a shred of joy in it, I was thinking it must be some kind of statement, and not an album of music people are supposed to like.

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I love love love about four of the songs on the Daft Punk album! The rest is admittedly, er, entirely forgettable, but I really think the presence of 'The Brainwasher' and 'Robot Rock' alone would redeem it.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I'll never understand the Low = slowcore thing. After the initial couple albums ('Hope,' 'Curtain') they really diversified, continually adding textures, sounds, emotions, production techniques, instruments, and even (to a lesser degree) tempos to the admittedly simple sound they started with. And yet they're discussed as though they've been literally glacial.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

3rd trail o' dead.

man, whatta complete crap out! going from ST&C's to THIS??!

pfff, i say!

QotSA's a soft 2nd, but, again, coming from that strong a last album, it's hard to get better...

eedd, Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

The Books, Lost and Safe. Not up to there standards at all, as well as plain old boring.

jmeister (jmeister), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.. I think I stopped buying Low records after Songs for a Dead Pilot. I just kind of burned out on them for a while, but it might be more of a personal thing; I didn't play my Smog and Palace records for years either.

QotSA, indeed, I listened to that & was like.. snooze..

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

The disappointment surrounding the Daft Punk album is the biggest disappointment of 2005 thus far.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Also, the Daft Punk and Low albums were polarizing albums. Lots and lots of people like them.

A truly disappointing album is met with more of a consensus shrug. Like Beck. Or Trail of Dead. Or Moby, if you are one of the 43 people who were anticipating the Moby album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

was anticipating

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

the new beck ain't remaking/destroying the world for me, but i dig what it is. bleak w/ some dust bros. thrown in there to cheer it up a bit.

i dunno, maybe i expected WAY less from beck and more from ToD+QotSA...

now, Oneida, don't fail me now!!!

eedd, Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Daria --

Basically, you left Low right before they started really taking off. I'd recommend giving 'Secret Name,' the "Bombscare" EP, 'Trust,' and maybe the "In the Fishtank" and "Last Night I Dreamt" EPs a try.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

its harder to list the albums that haven't disappointed

ha!

M83?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

wait... i didn't mean that the m83 record didn't disappoint.. those were two separate thoughts. argh.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

HUMAN FUCKING AFTER ALL

A Guy Called Gerald - To All Things What They Need

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem (not QUITE as good as everybody says it is, but still pretty damn good!)

Aphex Twin - Analord (every one of them)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Also every single this year that Pitchfork and www.drownedinsound.com have given five stars has been shite. And so has every PlayLouder single of the week. Crikey.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

ihatefun.com

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Guero isn't a disappointment for me because it followed up the most feeble album of Beck's career. Also there is a song on it that sounds like the Isley Brothers circa 1973, so it ain't that bad.

LCD Soundsystem: no. "Tribulations" alone justifies it. I guess since the first song is about Daft Punk it does have that sort of disappointment-by-association possibility, but enh.

I am, however, glad that the first album mentioned is the Prefuse 73 shot-o'-codeine. Not like I was expecting a lot, but squandering two Wu alumni (including my dream matchup of Ghostface-El-P) on beats that boring is a crime.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

its harder to list the albums that haven't disappointed

Ding ding ding!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Iron and Wine - Woman King EP
Magnolia Electric Co - What Comes After the Blues
MIA - Arular
Bloc Party - S/T
of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins
Crooked Fingers - Dignity and Shame

Eh, none of those disappointed me. I'm happy to have bought all of them (except Sunlandic Twins which I haven't bought yet). Hmm, guess I'm easy to please.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Other albums that I haven't heard in entirety yet, but I'd be willing to bet that they won't (or aren't) be disappointments:

M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us
The Books - Lost and Safe
Doves - Some Cities
Akron/Family - S/T
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Spoon - Gimme Fiction

I really am easy to please.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Back to disapointments: I second the Mu.

Mu Out of Breach. I don't like the Yokoish shrieking, the vomiting sounds on one cut, or the retro beats.

steve-k, Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I thought the Bloc Party record would be more than it was. I like it, but seems to have no fire, and I don't feel the need to put it on again right now. "Blue Light" annoyed me.

xpost - Actually, I do own Low's Secret Name, I'd forgotten about that. I'll have to get it out again and give it a chance. Like I said, it may have little to do with the music in question and more to do with me being lazy. I got obsessed with politics and had on NPR almost all the time for a couple of years.

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Garbage's album is disapointing.
I don't want to say anything before listening to it... but... seems like Weezer is gonna be in this list as well.
Queens Of The Stone Age... i agree on that one.
U2.. not that i was expecting something more but i'd like to think that they could come up with anything better.
Basement Jaxx best of. I hate the fact that it has all those awful radio edits.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

The only full-lengths I actively anticipated and have been satisified by are QOTSA, Electric Six and Spoon so far.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Doves - Some Cities
Soundtracks of Our Lives - Origin Vol. 1
Brendan Benson - Alternative To Love

don weiner, Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I find it interesting no one has mentioned Untilted. It's either really good, or no one cares about Autechre anymore.

Michael Copeland, Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

It's the latter.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Actually, "Draft 7:30" was a disappointment, whereas "Untilted" *sorta* feels like a return to form. I say "sorta" because of its similarities to "Confield", and many people (including me) are STILL on the fence about that album, even after four years. So, I have no idea if I'm disappointed about a "Confield"-esque album or not.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I actually really like the new Autechre--I've been enjoying it for a while now. I agree though that the new U2, the Bloc Party record, M83, Cyan and Ben, and the Books have been disappointing. I shouldn't have expected a lot from U2 after the last one, but I saw them on the "Elevation" tour and they were really amazing, so I guess that got my hopes up.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

its harder to list the albums that haven't disappointed

I totally disagree! I've enjoyed so many albums this year already.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Y'all are gonna roll your eyes at this, but Vanessa Williams, Everlasting Love -- she re-did a bunch of (too predictable) '70s soul grooves, which could have been a nice idea except that she sucked much of the life out of them and didn't take liberties with the arrangements. And I always thought she had such a nice voice, too.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

the new lovejoy album is not very good.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

m83 and prefuse definatly.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I was disappointed by the new Maktub record.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I actually thought Spoon's Gimme Fiction wasn't all that impressive. I like Kill The Moonlight more.

dstopping, Monday, 25 April 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Mike Jones

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

The Raveonette's album. I know there's a lot of love for it, but it's too damn thin for me.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

This thread is the biggest disappointment of 2005.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

M83, The Books, Mountain Goats

*ducks*

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

The Marianne Faithfull album.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

This thread is the biggest disappointment of 2005.

Yes, I'd rather hear about what people have liked this year than another thread of jaded complaints.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I would never hang out with this thread at all.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Interpol Antics- i have deemed it unlistenable after worshipping turn on the bright lights
and from what i ve heard so far... New Order waiting for the siren's call...

photoing,on,car, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

beck, the books, low, hood, destroyer + frog eyes, magnolia electric co., doves... bad year so far.

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

MU! you expect me to listen to this crap?

Aaron Ef. (aaron ef.), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

YES AND YOU WILL LIKE IT

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

No big disappointments for me so far, but a couple slight ones. One was Beck, but I feel maybe the biggest ones were Kaiser Chiefs. They are kind of hyped as the next Blur, which has made me very interested and, yes, they do sound like Blur. In fact, they sound a lot like Blur. Only the quality of their songs aren't quite up there with the material on "Parklife" and "The Great Escape". It isn't that "Employment" is a bad album, not in any way ("Caroline Yes" is a great song, for instance), but it just doesn't meet with my expectations.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I'm voting for the new albums by Ying Yang Twins and A.R.E. Weapons until somebody proves me wrong about either of them. They both strike me as totally dreary and humorless, at least so far, which is sad because their previous albums (both of which easily made my top tens in their respective years) were anything but. If I'm wrong, please explain why; I keep *trying* to like these two CDs, but no dice.

xhuxk, Monday, 8 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

the new British Sea Power is as deathly boring as their first was invigorating.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Oasis- Don't Believe the Truth
The Constantines- Tournament of Hearts

cdwill, Monday, 8 August 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

the new British Sea Power is as deathly boring as their first was invigorating.

is this some sort of trick?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

The Constantines- Tournament of Hearts
-- cdwill (use...), August 8th, 2005 1:44 PM.

Really? I was looking forward to it!

b.g.

deej.., Monday, 8 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I call bullshit on The Constantines "Tournament of Hearts."
It's fantastic. Way stronger than "Shine A Light".

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

My disappointments seem to be similar to everyone elses: New Order, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem and I Am Kloot (to an extent). I like the Low album though, i thought it was a nice change. I refuse to buy the Weezer album, as the singles were enough disappointment for me, thanks!

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Monday, 8 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

My disappointments seem to be similar to everyone elses: New Order

About this 'everyone else' claim...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

That new Constantines album is really dull. Not sure if their earlier stuff was much better, but I do remember that the last time I listened to a record by them, it was at least likeable. (Can't call them a disappointment per se', though, since I wasn't expecting anything.)

xhuxk, Monday, 8 August 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Ned, i'll be fair, the New Order album works better as an album than when you hear the individual tracks, but it still feels a little lacking in inspiration to me. I was referring to this thread, afore we go off on a huge tangent ;)

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

From what I've read on ILM, Big Star In Space is going to be a strong candidate for biggest disappointment.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Koazr's Round Stack failed to deliver what promised to be the easiest of pleasures. Disappointment times ten!

Robinson

Robinson (Robinson), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I really, really liked that LCD Soundsystem album when it came out but now I dislike pretty much all of it, save one or two songs.

gear (gear), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Every good album from 2005 is in this thread somewhere.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 8 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

the kicker album. it's half great but it could have been wholly fantastic, so easily.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Actually most of the albums by established dance acts have been complete and utter bobbins this year!!!! There was the Daft Punk elpee, with about an EPs worth of decent stuff padded out by crap demos!!!! And then Royksopp comes back sounding something like you'd get on a Tangerine Dream soundtrack for an 80s straight-to-video film!!!! Then Faithless attempt a concept album, and find they can only do it by doing everything with the SAME NOTE!!!!! But the real disappointment for me was the Chemical Brothers, who seemed to use that snoresome Rich Ashcroft track on their last album as the basis for an entire album which sounds like a slightly above average Apollo 440!!!! And NO BASS!!!

Just as well The Prodigy came back with an album which, although not on the level with Jilted Generation, was still quite fun!!! And a big yay to Vitalic for doing the album that Daft Punk should have done!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Mu, Slim Thug, John Doe

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

MIA - Arular
LCD Soundsystem
The Juan MacLean "Less Than Human"

Judging from what I've heard from the new Broken Social Scene LP, I'm going to add them to the list as well.

ugly and mean, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm anticipating a big bouquet of Liz Phair blossoming on this thread soon. Unless no one's expecting anything of her anymore.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Slim Thug

?!

deej.., Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't find a way into that record. I keep trying but the hooks aren't working.

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

They seem tired.

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't find a way into that record. I keep trying but the hooks aren't working.

OTM, even on the singles.

Rob Uptight. (Rob Uptight.), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

it's absolutely absurd that no one has mentioned THE MASSACRE by 50 Cent yet. GRODT was a minor classic (to myself and some others at least), but the massacre is fucking terrible! lloyd banks, and young buck, and especially the game's solo joints shit all over it from a great height. I guess this is a big difference tween ILM (where I lurk and occassionally post) and SOHH (where I lurk some), they have a thread about how much the massacre sucks every day still.

two mooolyawn dooler nptuuuunz beatss, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

disappointments: daft punk, mia, mazarin, fuck and one more i cant remember because it was so underwhelming.

im really loving the new constantines album -- very very subdued, especially in comparison to the other albums, but i think thats what makes it a good listen.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

new order wasn't a disappointment because after their previous album my expectations couldn't have been lower. indeed, in some ways WFTSC was a pleasant surprise.

in some ways.

the juan maclean album was disappointing ... the doves album was dire ... everything else has either exceeded or met my expectations.

oddly, i've just found a copy of the british sea power album on my hard disc. i swear i've never listened to it, or put it there. hmm.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't find a way into that record. I keep trying but the hooks aren't working.

-- dan. (dan_haa...), August 9th, 2005.

OTM, even on the singles.

-- Rob Uptight. (robuptigh...), August 9th, 2005.

I had the hooks for "I Ain't Heard Of That" and "This Is My Life" spinning around my head for a good few weeks. They are solid hooks and the whole album is maybe a zillion times better than the version that originally leaked.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Rollie OTM, I dont understand how you're having trouble finding hooks in that album at all. LIKE A BAOUWWSE

deej.., Wednesday, 10 August 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

And yeah, Massacre was a big disappointment. The trick of course is that most people on ILM didn't like the first one.

deej.., Wednesday, 10 August 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

i just sold arular, a purchase i do not regret but an album i don't need anymore.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

dEUS. So, so disappointing.
Trail of Dead seconded.
Minor disappointments: Death Cab (as in, I didn't expect much); Decemberists (a slight but noticeable slip in quality)

Oneida, Daedalus, Beck, Ponys

t. fiend (t. fiend), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

i gotta say i'm in the Slim Thug slight disappointment camp - idk, maybe the "weak-ass leak makes real thing look pretty damn good" strategy is paying dividends, but i still think most of those beats don't really suit his flow - more "Diamonds" and "Boyz in Blue" less "I Ain't Heard of That" and "Everybody Loves a Pimp." the title track is really hot though.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)
